NFT: The Acolyte

EdS56 : 7/11/2024 10:03 pm
I’ve tried to be objective, but it’s one of the
worst things I’ve seen on TV since
Beavis and Butthead. Absolutely awful.
Come on Beavis and Butthead
uconngiant : 7/11/2024 10:06 pm : link
Has some redeeming qualities unlike Acolyte which is just terrible and it made me laugh unlike this crap show
I enjoy it
90.Cal : 7/11/2024 10:16 pm : link
I like the strange back story/side story… I like the “the Jedi aren’t perfect” direction it’s taken. Curious to see where it goes each episode.
If nobody minds, I'd like to miller this thread a little.

The word "acolyte" seems wasted on meaning a "devoted follower or attendant."

"Acolyte" should be something that you put in a car's tank to improve mileage, or an injection that takes away the pain of arthritis, or a calorie free energy drink.

What does acolyte conjure up in your mind?

^^^ YES! ^^^
I watched the first episode
weeg in the bronx : 7/12/2024 7:15 am : link
I thought it was blah, like much of the other star wars disney product. Characters were not engaging, the story was kind of head scratching in the first episode in terms of timeline/plausibility. And from the online reviews I have seen of further episodes, it clearly was not being written for middle aged while guys.

Haha. I’ll start watching if Disney Star Wars brings back the Acolyte Protection Agency.

Agreeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!

Screw Disney. Screw Kathleen Kennedy. But never shit on Bevis and Butthead?
I don't think
Pete in MD : 7/12/2024 9:24 am : link
it started off that bad, but when is the story going to progress?
If Kathleen Kennedy
Jay on the Island : 7/12/2024 9:37 am : link
became CEO of McDonalds she would hire a radical Vegan to make all menu decisions.
I think some people just like complaining about things
Metnut : 7/12/2024 9:43 am : link
and being outraged all the time. I saw about 10 minutes of this and it was shitty and turned it off.

Why continue to watch something that you hate? By continuing to watch and driving up the ratings, you're actually the fuel which supports production of more of this stuff.
Disney deserves the backlash
UConn4523 : 7/12/2024 9:54 am : link
they’ve gone off the rails with their content and they way they run their business. Most people I know tried this show and gave up on it, don’t know many that are hate watching.
Kathleen Kennedy
Dave on the UWS : 7/12/2024 9:54 am : link
pushed for this series for one reason and one reason only.
Unless you're blind its obvious.

The show is terrible
Jim in Forest Hills : 7/12/2024 11:28 am : link
just flat out bad. I dont think Im watching anymore SW content unless reviews are sterling. What a waste of time on poorly written trash.

And Beavis and Butthead rocks.
Everyone hates
Pete in MD : 7/12/2024 12:09 pm : link
Boy Band Jedi that much?!
Ok I'll say this
Jim in Forest Hills : 7/12/2024 12:16 pm : link
The bad guy Qimir has loads of potential.

And the jedi Jecki, I liked her, she was written as the most sensible in the whole show. Of course she was killed after a well choreo'd battle.

But aside from that, the show just doesn't make sense.
I thought the first few episodes were bad
81_Great_Dane : 7/12/2024 2:51 pm : link
but I think it's gotten better. Or at least more interesting. I think it's interesting to see the Jedi order portrayed as sort of bureaucratic, self-interested and sclerotic, and to see that the Jedi (especially the series' main Jedi character, Sol) screwed this situation up catastophically and that (apparently) ignites the fuse that eventually leads to the rise of the Sith and the destruction of the Jedi.

I have probably said this before but I think the whole mythos was steered in a fundamentally wrong direction with the addition of the "mitichlorians" and the idea that Force powers are a matter of blood and bloodline, that some people have it and some don't. That came back in this, when they tested the twins' blood.

How they managed to take Dafne Keen (who was so good as little-girl Wolverine in "Logan") and make her bland is completely beyond me. They've got all these good actors in the series and don't seem to know what to do with them.

Midichlorians are a marker of someone's strength with the Force not the cause of it. But a strong Force user having strong in the Force children was canonized with TESB, long before the word midichlorian was ever uttered
I hate the fact
Pete in MD : 7/12/2024 3:49 pm : link
that everyone who uses the force has to be a "Jedi" and using a lightsaber is part of the "Jedi Arts." The Force is supposed to be a mystic thing who anyone can tap into, but some are more sensitive than others.

Rian Johnson was trying to explore this with the broom kid and Luke saying the Jedi were done, but Disney just wanted recycled crap.
I don’t think it is as bad as some have said…
sb from NYT Forum : 7/12/2024 4:13 pm : link
But it’s certainly not very good, and there have been some real stinker episodes, including the most recent one.

Still, I would say it’s better than book a Boba Fett. I stopped watching Obi-Wan after one episode because I thought it was crap also, so I can’t really comment if this is better or worse than Obi-Wan.

While I somewhat agree I would say that from overarching story standpoint this is explained well. The Jedi actively sought to find all children who were force sensitive and tried to train them as Jedi. Made it seem as it was the only way and for most people in the galaxy the were the only game in town. Filoni was able to explore non jedi force users in both Clone Wars and Rebels but that is because those series drifted more out of the Skywalker storyline

The Acolyte is not good, but I think it accomplishes showing the earlier jedi as more flawed characters versus the "perfect Jedi" evolution that you see in Phantom Menace.
Finished the series the other day - What a piece of crap

**Some spoilers**

Writing is terrible and acting is worse. I read a couple of reviews touting the fights in the final episode. I thought they were really bad (and Episode 7 also). They look choreographed, which should not be the case in the finished product. It almost looked like early rehearsals.

I did not love this series, but saw potential in it. I think it needed to be longer than 8 episodes and/or longer episodes. They rushed each episode, which was one problem. But, with the way they flashed back in some episodes, it made it even harder to tell the story with any continuity because of pace and timing.

One thing I did like was the decision to intermittently flash back. If they told the story in chronological order, the story would be less impactful. Showing glimpses of the events on Brendoc lent a little new insight without revealing everything at once. That said, once they did reveal, the details/story was weak. Episode 7 was trash.

As for the Jedi, I think this did more than reveal them as flawed. It made them look like bungling idiots. Therre are 2 ways they did this. There are capable Jedi, like Sol and Indara, who just made bad decisions and then some that genuinely just come across as morons (Yord and the kid who seemed to be the assistant to Vernestra - according to IMDB his name is Yog) I still don't get why Disney bought Star Wars and then turn it over to people who seem to hate the canon and the Jedi specifically.

Then the cameos that were being heralded were weak. Plagueis was obvious. But, all that buildup to barely see him and no lines or interaction. we don't even know if there will be another season. Some more there would have been nice. It was not unlike the entire Force Awakens centering on the search for Luke and then he has 3 seconds of screen time. Then Yoda? If he is there, why the Hell is everything running through Vernestra? Am I supposed to be excited they showed the back of Yoda's head? I'm not 5. I want something there, or don't bother with him at all.
Disney Star Wars in general
Matt M. : 7/18/2024 11:56 am : link
Moving forward, why should I give an F about seeing Rey try to rebuild the Jedi order? The progression of her character was almost universally panned. When lifelong fans (and even a new generation of lifelong fans like 2nd generation fans) waited years to see Luke build the Jedi order and that is tossed aside, who gives a shit about this.

I know he made a lot of money on the sequels, but I feel bad for Mark Hamill. He seemed genuinely disappointed and upset with the decisions made for the character he loved and help create. He tried to give the company lines in the press tours, but he was noticeably upset and when he did venture slightly from the Disney approved comments, he was quite snarky about it.
Oh yeah - a plot point that made no sense
Matt M. : 7/18/2024 12:19 pm : link
Why the Hell did that otter looking tracker sabotage the starship pursuit of Mae? They show him to seem concerned when he discovers Mae was posing as Osha. He goes to lengths to hide. Then he doesn't tell Sol and then inexplicably disables Sol's ship while in pursuit. Then he goes back to helping them track Mae. WTF?
I really wanted to like this
Jersey Heel : 7/18/2024 5:27 pm : link
But it was terrible. The characters just made inexplicably stupid decisions. The padawan charging into the coven because he wanted to go home? The mother turning into some sort of vapor ghost and turning Mae into the same thing as she looked scared and then being like, “I was going to let you take Osha.” after getting stabbed? Uh, what? I’d have stabbed you too if you did that in an already tense situation after already effing with the padawan’s mind. Just so stupid. Then Matrix lady kills the coven who are possessing the Wookie. Again, justified.

The story was all over the place and the Jedi looked like incompetent dumbasses. Just terrible all around.
