In a largely unprecedented financial concession to give roster flexibility to a contender, New York Knicks star Jalen Brunson has agreed on a four-year, $156.5 million extension, his agent Sam Rose of CAA tells ESPN --- $113M less guaranteed than he’s eligible to receive in one…
It does nothing this year. The extension will kick in next year and give them flexibility to make trades, re-sign Mitch or Mikal
Why am I not surprised ...

So any guess why we haven't signed Precious and McCullar?
Could be part of a bigger deal to come. Watch this video below for the 411 (start watching at the 15:34 mark that I've got linked for you below):
KFS POD | Cap Or No Cap? (4.0) - Backup Center of Attention - Knicks Film School - July 8, 2024 - ( New Window )
Interesting, thanks.
The Suns have a payroll this coming season of $428 million with $223 million in salaries and the rest is luxury tax. They are stuck with Beal and can't make moves to improve. The Sixers have 96% of their cap in 3 players. The Knicks have 96% of cap in approx 8 players.
This extension will allow them to continue to improve and have to shelf depth
You also said IHart was coming back, which looks to have never been a possibility.

I mean, he signed for like $13 mil per year more than what the Knicks could have offered. Seems like OKC thought him going back to the Knicks was a real possibility or they wouldn’t have gone that far above and beyond what New York could match.

I said the Knicks expected him to come back, which was the case until OKC offered nearly $30 million a year. My track record speaks for itself, including having Mikal as the move most likely to happen in April too

yup
The Knicks also expected that Kevin Durant and Kyrie were going to sign with them, shit happens and things change. Doesn’t mean the information was bad
2 years/$58M vs 4 years/$72M.
It's not as though he got 4 years/$144M from OKC. Which would actually be double.

30 million a year vs 16 million a year is double..
Its also 58 million in 2 years over 72 million in 4 years..
Its also only have 64 million the Knicks could offer, the 72 was with incentives..
So he would of 6 more million guaranteed from the Knicks but it would of been in 4 years..

As you know, iHart's second guaranteed year with OKC is $28.5M, so $29.2M guaranteed for two years/$58.5M.
I'd say that's a significant come down from the 4y/$100m guaranteed potential being floated for iHart around the time Begley said he was unlikely to return, which was the day of the Bridges trade and the day before the draft.
I haven't been able to find info on the details of the incentives that made up $8.5M of the Knicks' max 4y/$72.5M offer to iHart. But at least the opportunity would have been there. Don't see any in his OKC contract.
Alex Sarr with 4 blocks and looked impressive defensively
Bub Carrington also looked good, 19-9-8. The Wizards may have had a sneaky good draft
Terrance Shannon looked great, with 25 points. There's definitely a chance we regret not taking him instead of Dadiet.
Dillingham really struggled
As we all expected, Bronny is awful.
Daron Holmes tore his achilles, really tough break for someone the Nuggets were really excited about. Their depth is in serious trouble.
And now this, clearly a guy who values winning over being the highest paid.

Jalen Brunson isn’t giving up $113 million, that’s not the way to look at this.
There’s a pathway for him to make it up.
Five year max between 2025-2030: five years, $269 million.
Three year maximum extension + first two years of max contract in 2028: five years, $263 million.
and on top of that doing an extension now guarantees him more than 2x his career earnings (to this point $60m, would have been 85m after this upcoming year, now guaranteed $156m).
so he gets a big chunk of life changing money guaranteed now and eliminates any performance/injury risk from this year.
he helps his team over the next 3 years put better players around him.
and it could only cost him $6m gross which is really half that amount post tax. and if the next rights deal is as big as being implied, i think that future 35% max projection could go up even higher to cover that spread?
he basically traded 1 immediate year of risk of underperformance/injury in 2024-25, for 2 future years of risk of underperformance/injury in 2025-2027. and i would have to believe all parties involved have some kind of understanding about that future contract.

Still like Jalen Brunson round 2 if we don't land a PG round 1. The French kid scares me round 1 #Knicks"

More concretely, a bit OT from JB extension, but what are your takes on Fred Katz' assessment of the roles Bridges will play in 1st 5 and reserves this season? I'm not the NYK student you guys are but the emphasis on the 2nd unit surprised me.

Was the Kessler stuff recent? I hadn't seen that.
I think they'll pair Bridges and Randle and Brunson and OG in their lineup staggering. Keep one elite defender and one primary ball handler in the lineup at all times. Hart and DVO are so versatile they would fit in fine with both duos.

Maybe with the apron nailed down Leon can pull more rabbits.
On Bridges and Brunson, seems as though you and Katz pretty much on same page. I had (ignorantly) assumed he'd be first 5 but the rotation laid out might save them from Thibs.

This is all good but you can't bank on money in 2028 so much can happen in 4 years when the deal comes up so it's a bold move on his part to take the deal now.
I know everyone talks about the next deal but a 30 yr old PG might not get the max deal down the road and Rose could be gone. Knicks could be sold and he still could get injured. What he did was selfless right now and a bold move.
he guaranteed himself and extra 130m today. and preserved the right to make up that difference of anything he may have left on the table waiting until next year, just 2 years later.
do you not see that there was also risk to delay guaranteeing the extra $130m for 1 more full year?
if i had $60m of lifetime earnings, id be a lot more motivated to lock in that $130m that worried about possibly forgoing $37m in the process. just yesterday some kid in summer league tore his achilles. was just drafted a few weeks ago, totally innocuous looking play.

Yeah I made my feelings known on Shannon here a few times before the draft. He could end up being one of the absolute steals of the draft. The league has absolutely fallen in love with the 3 & D wings. He doesn't fit that classic mold, but few in the draft have the combo of athleticism and ability to create his own shot the way Shannon can. His touch while not elite is still pretty good from the outside. I'm drop dead in love with the TWolves draft.

Free agent center Taj Gibson has agreed on a one-year, $3.3 million deal with the Charlotte Hornets, Mark Bartelstein of
@Prioritysports
tells ESPN. GM Jeff Peterson and coach Charles Lee bring on Gibson, 39, to mentor in a young locker room.
You can see the appeal with Dadiet though. He looks a legit 6'8/6'9 and pretty fluid out there. Locked up Brandon Miller once. Nothing else of note. Hakpuri has legit size too but missed three pretty easy shots already.
But everything else has been impressive. Handle, passing, burst.
Fuck it, I'm excited.

He’s 18 so he might be ready to play around the time they will have to think about getting younger and having cheaper role players, in 2 or 3 seasons.
It’s possible they had an agreement to draft him if he would sign for less than rookie scale, which he did. That helps with cap room. I’m not the first person to speculate about that.
I suspect the Kolek pick told Jokubaitis there was no way he’d get to play for the Knicks this season. I think Jokubaitis is in the Summer League hoping someone will trade for him, and the Knicks probably hope so too.
But everything else has been impressive. Handle, passing, burst.

Dadiet…woof. I assume it was nerves, but he doesn’t look at all ready.
Hukporti is a big body and can move around pretty well, but he’s not as polished as someone his age should be. We need a backup C.
Toppin and Washington looked good, but they’re not going to get any burn with the big club.

I disagree on Dadiet. His shot wasn’t there, but he defended very well and made some plays off the dribble for his teammates, and is a connective passer. His feel for the game looked good despite his nerves. The shot will be fine.
Toppin and Washington become interesting if they show major improvement.
Hukporti, also a project.
They looked ragged even by Summer League standards but still lost by only 4.
Fans are gonna love this guy. Buy stock now.
