. I know most people are going to blast this lineup, but I like it. DJ is their least bad leadoff option and Rice gives some protection to Judge. I like that Judge is in the field and not DHJ'ing. I know he's only in for the lefty but I prefer Jones to Grisham.

Actually, a perfect move by Hyde. Creates a scrum and long delay making Holmes, who has been struggling, wait in the rain. If they get another guy on they get the tying run to the plate.

It looked like Tanner Swanson was the guy Hyde was yelling at. An animated Swanson was pulled from the scrum and held back and was yelling at (I presume) Hyde as he was pulled out of the crowd.

Now, the real question is when will Boone see what a blind man can and put LeMahieu on the bench. Three years of advancing decline. He's had 35 games now, 131 plate appearances, hitting under .200 with 2 doubles and no HRs. Cabrera is a better hitter against righthanders. Tonight he had an ugly strike out, three weak ground balls (including a DP on an easy two-hopper to the pitcher), and a line drive to an OFer. An OBP of .295, slugging at .225, and an OPS of about .525. And it's not like he's a gold glover at third. The only Yankee he can outrun is Stanton. Put it this way. Was there a worse leadoff hitter in any MLB game last night? Were there 10 worse hitters in any lineup last night?

Their 'least bad' leadoff option is Soto. His hand is hurting his hitting (especially his power) but he's still close to .400 OBP. Rather than have a guy make an out before Soto walks, let Soto lead off and walk. Bat Judge second, like the last few years. Now you might get two guys on with no outs. Still, not a guarantee with their lack of situational hitting, but two on with no outs is better than two on with one out.

did Hyde have any sort of legitimate beef? That is not a spot Holmes would be headhunting even if he wanted to, it was raining, etc.

I've read on BBI that Boone doesn't make the lineups, but I don't know one way or the other if that's true.

Anyway - let's get the rookie in for DJLM next game.

No one (here) knows for sure, but there is a lot of speculation that the front office is heavily involved. There are also posters on BBI who find it inconceivable that Boone doesn't make the lineup by himself.
NYT article on lineup decisions
shyster : 7/13/2024 12:25 am : link
from a few years ago.

The article is written based on Cashman's defense of Boone's role, and there are statements in the article that can be taken to support either view.

But this Cashman comment, in the context of the rest of the article, to me tells the story:

Quote:
“It’s a healthy discord,” Cashman said. “He’s going to have his reasonings, he’s going to share them, and then it’s my responsibility to accept those and appreciate the fact that he did the dissection and he took the time, and the patience and the care to really evaluate all aspects of it. Then we commit. If this is what he wants to do, even though it might be something that I thought we should go a different way, so be it. He’s got my support.”

Translation: Boone is given a "suggested" lineup. If he really wants something different, he can run it by the FO. And if Boone really wants the something different, Cashman will let him have it. Probably.

Stu, enjoy, and I hope you and she have a great time.

Everyone’s got their own methods, but my family always parks and meets at the Bronx Terminal Market and makes the short walk. It seems to be one of the easiest ways in/out by car.
Gonna be a trek walking from the Bronx to Baltimore...probably

would pay more for parking also. J/K.

Cashman probably treats Boone like I treat my son at dinner time. He gets two proteins, a fish and a meat, some carbs and veggies. I prefer him to eat them in a certain order, and present them to him that way. I give him a stern talking to when he wants to throw the food around, but I can't fire him because of the boss (wife.) And he's not allowed to throw a tantrum when my cooking sucks.

When the Yankees were in Tampa
arniefez : 7/13/2024 4:45 pm : link
there was a graphic up on the Rays broadcast for each hitters average vs fast balls, curve balls and off speed.

The Yankees averages vs curve balls and off speed was eye opening. Every player I can remember seeing was about .260 on fastballs and about .150 or less on curve/off speed. I don't remember Wells fastballs vs curve/off speed splits but I bet that's why he saw that pitch selection.

Sometimes if a pitcher has his best fastball, which it appears the Orioles pitcher today does, maybe set aside the scouting report?

I've been to a lot of MLB stadiums over the years. A lot that no longer exist too, but out of the ones that do I agree with you.

Whoever is responsible for building Camden took the perfect location and then built the perfect baseball stadium for that location.

I've been to Fenway and Wrigley and Dodger Stadium their history is what makes them special. Camden has been special since the day it opened.

Yeah Arnie that new LF-CF configuration has sort of a reverse Fenway feel to it with all the nooks and crannies and cut outs, and the mini monster in right. Still a great atmosphere in and around the park.

Soto HR: 83 mph changeup
Judge HR: 84 mph changeup

In addition to Wells' HR earlier on 84 mph slider. Of course, a lot depends on pitch quality and, judging by location, these looked like hangers.

Judge is good against offspeed, generally, per Statcast, not so much against breaking.

Good hitters eat bad pitches. A good fastball is still the best pitch in baseball.

I was sitting very high up behind the plate. What was his fastball/slider/change breakdown? Seemed to me he was mostly throwing fastballs the first 4 innings or so, then got his slider going the last inning or 2. Hard to see the pitch difference up there though.
