Here we go again with another series thread. The Mets are playing a terrible Rockies team in their final series before the All-Star Break at Citi Field. Click
HERE to read a series preview for this three-game set against Colorado. The Mets won their previous series against the Nationals and are looking to do the same against the team with the second-worst record in the National League. A series win here would help them a great deal as they jockey for position for the last two wildcard spots in the National League. Enjoy 😊!

-The Mets sit in the final Wildcard spot to start the day (a percentage point ahead of the Padres whom they have 4 games in hand on) & are playing a Rockies team with an abysmal road record (13-34). This series will be the Rockies’ only appearance in Queens this season. The Mets have the best record in MLB since May 30th, with a record of 25-12. The Mets placed starting pitcher David Peterson (LHP) on the Paternity List today & have recalled reliever Eric Orze (RHP) from Triple-A Syracuse in his place.

Yup sounds good! Futures game is today as well but doubtful I'll get to watch. Draft tomorrow so now's perfect time to start one. I'll be down in Balt all day tomorrow so probably won't contribute much until Monday. Will catch Os/Yanks while there.
Solid! The Yanks/O's game today is gonna be fun! Did you peep that fight yesterday? Wild stuff man! Great point about the futures game. Sproat's in it if I recall correctly.. I'll create it now while I have time. I'm gonna be out and about later on today after posting the lineups, so this is my chance. Thanks for the input :-) Enjoy B-Mo'!
Yup. Hyde had all the right to be pissed after the Yanks were whining last series about judge getting hit.
Interesting. I don't pay any attention to the Prison Stripers or the O's. Guess I will from now on, haha. We all hope the kid who got hit's ok (Heston Kjerstad).
for those interested, as we approach the ASB here's how I would project a Pete Alonso extension right now should the mets decide to engage in extension talks again like last year. as a reminder both stearns/boras are new so whether or not it happens, who knows, it's mostly up to stearns. but if he wants to keep alonso i think there are a lot of reasons to try to buy low bc his negotiating position has never been weaker while still generally putting up a pretty typical season.

-The Mets are wearing their City Connect uniforms today. They start today as the second Wildcard team in the National League standings, ahead of both the Cardinals (due to a head-to-head tiebreaker) & the Padres and Diamondbacks (by 1 game each). The Mets hit 5 home runs yesterday—Iglesias & Bader each went deep twice), which is the most they’ve hit in one game so far this season. They’ve hit 58 home runs since June 1st—the second highest total in MLB since that time (as of the immediate conclusion of yesterday’s game). The bullpen is clearly struggling though. Diekman, Maton, & Diaz pitched yesterday. Let’s see who they throw today to finish the game after Scott’s finished for the day.

I am wondering why you have Gamel and Stewart in OF with a flyball prone pitcher on the mound. McNeil/Nimmo/Bader in some combination is your best defensive OF and you then play Iglesias at 2B.
easily my biggest frustration of the stearns era is this roster construction carrying both DJ and Gamel. They both suck at pretty much everything. DJ as a power bat off the bench if you are down late i can squint and see but carrying both of them and giving him starts in the middle of the order at this point is beyond wasteful.
i know im dead horsing this but baty or acuna would add more and i think i can argue it's probably better for either of their developments to get big league exposure.
they are subbing vientos out late each night for defense, no reason that shouldnt be baty at 3b. iglesias has looked good on defense but he is not grading out well.

Ridiculous they aren't all stars...makes the all star game a joke
Butto May have found his niche. Would love to see Megill in the bullpen and do the same
I heard that Alonso said he wouldn't be in the HR derby if he was in the All-Star game, which is understandable. I think it is weird personally to be in something like that. A lot of people dropped out/were injured, so weren't in the HR derby. They wanted Alonso for ratings. So Alonso wound up being chosen as the Mets rep

Butto's a starter. It's just that they need him doing this for now. It's always good to be a team guy, which he is. Next season, he needs to be in a starting rotation---either here or somewhere else in a trade. The young man is a gamer and a winner.

The thing with Butto is I am not sure there is an ideal role for him. His worst performances are when he starts slow or he faces hitters for a third time. In relief you can try to get his first inning against hitters who are more apt to not want to draw a walk until he gets in a groove. As a starter he is facing players who are more disciplined and, as such, it is his worst inning when he starts. If you can find an Andrew Miller-type those can be really useful if they can go every 2nd or 3rd game. If you only need 4-5 innings from your 4th and/or 5th starter because you have a guy who can give you 2+ in relief that is like being able to get 6-7 from that role and not many teams can say that they have that luxury from the back of their rotation.
It's very similar situation and the commentary above were things said back then about Lugo..
Interesting how Stearns plays this. Since Lugo, Mets have been hesitant to use starter prospects in bullpen to help big club.
For example, could Sproat he an impact reliever this year cheaper than a trade? Ala Adam Wainwright?

-The Mets are going for their second straight sweep and have won 7 of their last 10 overall, including 5 in a row. They’re a season-high 4 games above .500 (tied for their season high in that regard) & are also a game above .500 at home now (26-25) after having been below .500 before at Citi Field. They’re in sole possession of the 3rd Wildcard spot in the National League going into today’s final game before the All-Star Break (they’re one game ahead of the Padres & D-backs each), during which time they’ll be off for 4 days. José Buttó & Dedniel Núñez pitched great yesterday out of the bullpen allowing no runs and only 1 hit between them over 4 & 2/3 innings. Diekman, Maton, & Diaz pitched two days ago. Righties Houser, Orze, Ottavino, & lefty Young are well rested & ready to go out of the pen today.

has not been missed imo. his bat is solid but his defense is so bad it's only a wash out. the better D they've gotten (and hitting) from iglesias has more than made up for marte.
i cant imagine we see marte much more the rest of his contract here. i would think the mets will pay it down at some point just to move him someplace else and clear the roster spot. just sucks he couldnt stay healthy and keep hitting to do that at the deadline.
-He comes back for the stretch run in late August/early September and plays well, while staying healthy.
-Then the Mets could trade him in the off-season to a team that might wat a spare OF/DH. Marte's last year of his Mets deal is next year.
-The Mets could pay that money down, a la James McCann't in the offseason of 2022 (they actually paid down 19 million out of the 24.3 mill remaining on the last two years of his deal).
Bonus: they could do the same with Jeff McNeil this coming off-season too, but we'll cross that bridge when we get to it.

i think the mets best roster construction rest of year is finding an option at 2b that allows mcneil and marte to basically 50/50 platoon in RF.
Marte was crushing lefties, and holding his own vs. righties.
McNeil doesn't have a big split either way and both were worse than marte, but he is the better defender and ideally you could play him against pitchers whose stuff he matches up better with (whatever that is). both of them are deteriorating so hopefully less playing time helps bring out the best of whatever is left in each of them.
baty is likely the best bat they can put at 2b and acuna is the best athlete/glove. iglesias is a fun story right now but i assume he will regress to where he's probably best as a bench player.
2) Ottavino - Last pitched on July 11th
3) Orze - Last pitched on July 8th
4) Young - Last pitched on July 11th
-Diaz will prolly be available today since he last pitched only two days ago. The same goes for Diekman, but nobody wants to see him, lol.
*Orze will prolly be sent back to Syracuse right after the ASB when Peterson will prolly come off the Paternity List. I wouldn't be surprised to see him get some burn today if the game is a blowout, one way or the other.

I like that. Unfortunately, we can't depend on the advancement of Drew Gilbert like we once thought due to his injury status. This also would mean that the Mets should re-sign Bader if he's open to another short deal (a year, or two max). Bader should definitely get qualifying offer this coming off-season.
The Phillies send EIGHT players to the All Star Game -- and there's no room for Lindor or Nimmo ?!? I probably won't watch that game.
Let's get these Rockies one more time and take a break.
1) Scott
2) Butto
3) Sproat
4) Tidwell
Peterson's another homegrown guy who could be re-signed and add to this.
Then you add in guys who aren't home-grown, like Severino and Manaea. Add in a possible trade or FA and you're really cooking with oil.
Clifford and Gilbert should be up here in the OF too by then.
Notable 2026 rookies would be Sproat and Clifford. I like it.

+1
the only complicating factor somewhat would be the presence of marte and soto if they are able to get him which i assume they wont know prior to deciding QO, but marte isnt so complicated i guess they can always just waive him and open up the roster spot if bader accepts.
if they were to bring back both bader (on 1 year QO) and add someone like soto, whenever ready whichever CF prospect they choose (gilbert, acuna, jett) could get phased in over the year in a sort of tyrone taylor type role and then eventually take over for bader.

it wont be all homegrown because they need some proven commodities, but the cream will rise and they should have really good competitions/depth - which will hopefully sharpen whoever gets the opportunity.
if butto continues pitching like he has in BP i'd keep him there.

I forgot about Soto. He is the proverbial White Whale, and would be a better fit here than Ohtani ever would have been. If you can get him, then no plans have to be adjusted. NO two ways about it. Do you think they could possibly re-sign Pete AND go after Soto Eric?
Sproat and Tidwell should be here by then. Gilbert, Clifford and Acuna (if Acuna's part of the plan going forward). Jett might be here too, if he's healthy.
Márquez is expected to throw 75-90 pitches Sunday. The 29-year-old right-hander has won at least 11 games four times and is 65-56 with a 4.41 ERA in eight big league seasons — all with the Rockies.
Work that pitch count early and get into their bullpen. Sweep these turkeys and stretch the winning streak to 6. Mets play the Marlins immediately after the ASB. Would be nice to win 9 in a row against the dregs of the NL.

this answer probably requires more of a deep dive into the numbers of how it would look in future seasons, but pretending $ doesn't matter my gut answer is yes.
from a pure 26 man roster standpoint id argue it's still a more flexible construction than the current roster with JDM landlocking the DH spot.
Vientos and Pete can share 1b/DH, Baty (or Mauricio) can take 3b, Soto can take RF and the occasional DH day.
you have total flexibility to carry lighter hitting defensive oriented players like Bader and Acuna at 2b/cf.
lindor
nimmo
soto
alonso
is as good as any top 4 in baseball for probably a 2 year run at least, with soto obviously locking in an elite #3 hitter for the next 8-10 years.
perfect timing.
