The ball was right at him and was well short of the warning track. Should’ve been caught. However, guys get frozen on balls hit directly at them sometimes. The Volpe play was an even bigger clusterfuck.

Statcast has the expected BA at .150, but that doesn't tell the whole story.

Verdugo was playing in to reduce the likelihood of a bloop from the left hand hitter tying the game. He may have been signaled to play there.

The ball was hit right at him, which is the most difficult to read. Play should have been made but not reprehensible.

Volpe's misplay was much worse. Shortstop has to make that play. He let the situation get to him.
Well

A sweep there rights the ship going into the break still in first place with some questions answered about the SP and bullpen. Now they have to stew on this for a week. Terrible loss.
Why has it not become obvious to Yankees management

There's nothing off with him, this is who he is. He's been here over three years and its the same thing. He does have a great sinker, but his command is terrible. He rarely has a 1-2-3 inning and by now good hitters know to take pitches, foul off other pitches and eventually they'll get walked or he'll leave a meatball over the plate.
This gut-wrencher calls for some perspective
pivo : 7/14/2024 5:35 pm : link
- Recall that the O’s - maybe the AL’s best roster - avoided a 7-game losing streak with that miracle. It’s just a long season, and sh!t happens.
- After what we have seen for the past 3 weeks, I’ll take a series win at Baltimore. Yeah, shoulda, woulda, coulda. I’ll still take 2 of 3.
- Judge looks like he’s started hitting again. Phew…
- Torres looks like he’s started to hit. We were looking like a lineup that had two pitch-around spots and 7 easy outs.
- Rice has been more good than bad at this point.
- Stanton is due back. Let’s hope it doesn’t take 3 weeks to start hitting.
- Grisham seems to be more good than bad. Maybe a 1-season bridge.
- Middle relievers are getting the job done.
- Wells is a pleasant surprise.
- DJ seems to be coming around - at least not the total offensive liability that he has been.
OK, it’s not all good….preceding comments covered some issues. Holmes is an adventure waiting to happen.
I’m still feeling better than I was on Thursday.

I do know this - it’s never as bad - or as good - as it seems at the moment…

A few thoughts
Matt M. : 7/14/2024 5:46 pm : link
1) With Vivas up, I want to see him play. Fuck Torres already.

2) That 9th is equal parts blame on Holmes, Volpe, and Verdugo. Yes, Holmes got the 3rd out twice. But, he also gave up a hit and 2 walks before that. Volpe booted a routine play that would have ended the game and Verdugo froze on the liner. That's not a can of corn, but it is a ball that a major league OF, especially a Gold Glove OF, should make every time.

3) Holmes is just not a guy I have confidence in as the closer of a championship caliber team.

4) That loss really takes the joy out of the first series win in weeks.
Verdugo had a similar play on a Freeman liner earlier this year.
Jim in Hoboken : 7/14/2024 5:59 pm : link
A shrewd organization wouldn't have asked their prized prospect to have 80 AB's in the minors so this guy could play. At this point, we can't even be confident he isn't going to be brought back to block someone.

No sense complaining about one win, but Holmes will be disaster in the playoffs if we ever get there.

Someone should tell Volpe to not try to match Henderson, just play your game and go the other way.

Please no McMahon so Rice will have to sit, he's a career .220 hitter on the road.
I agree about Dominguez
Matt M. : 7/14/2024 6:06 pm : link
Look, he may have ended up with the same injury if he got called up and he may not. The bottom line is, to me, that he got healthy from his surgery, was absolutely raking and they elected to extend his rehab assignment. Why? For Verdugo? That's BS. The kid is their best prospect and showed a glimpse of why everyone was so excited last year. Extending his rehab is just more of the same in terms of how this team handles their top prospects. They waste them away in AAA until they have no more value to the big club or anyone else. When they do get called up, they usually waste them on the bench. Hell, they almost did the same with Rice, calling him up and then a week later trading for JD Fucking Davis. WHY?
Vivas sent back down
BigBlueShock : 7/14/2024 6:24 pm : link
Great job by the Yankees to call a guy up and let him sit on the bench for three days without getting him his MLB debut and completely ruining the moment for the kid. Because apparently DJL and Oswaldo Cabrera are just too important to not have in the lineup

A big WTF? He should be playing over any of the 3 of Torres, Cabrera, or DJLM on a given night. Another blown chance with a prospect. Now, they ruined it for him wasted a few days, and worse they have no idea what he can do against MLB pitching or if he can really replace any of them.

We already know we have shit in the other 3.
Jared Serna is one of the few prospects actually hitting, BA ranked
Jim in Hoboken : 7/14/2024 7:06 pm : link
him #10 in the system at mid-season. He's 22 already and still in high A. He already had 100 AB's at the same level last year and did fairly well.

Not a big deal of course, but it's like somebody simply forgot about him. Either that or he's on the major league debut at age 25 track the team subscribes to.

How much do you want to bet the glut at middle IF that was so promising last year, including the ones currently in the low minors, ending up producing nothing at the big league level in a few years?

And what do we really have in Volpe?
Awesome!

Exactly. I am so tired of hearing that every time he gets 1 hit. He is shot and is really not special in the field at this point. He needs to be DFAd.

Why didn't Vivas play and why was he sent down?

Hate to say it, but the biggest problem right now is Volpe
Ron from Ninerland : 7/14/2024 11:56 pm : link
He is now directly responsible for two losses with boneheaded base running and boneheaded fielding. He may have lost a third with boneheaded hitting. I'm talking about the game where Wells, representing the tying run got a 10 pitch walk and the Volpe hacks at the second pitch he saw which was probably a ball and grounds out.

I realize young guys can go into long slumps, but right now Volpe doesn't seem to have his head in the game. I have no idea what the problem is.

Only reason I can think of is that they want to activate Stanton right after the break and they want to hang on to Jones. By sending Vivas down now, they only have to wait six days after the break to recall him if they need him.

He's way up there. If any one of yesterdays three goats didn't suck holy ass all June the Yanks would be comfortably in first. If they actually played well they'd be `10 games up.

Volpe is disappointing but so be it. Have to dance with the girl you brung in his case.

The other 2 need to lose their first string jobs ASAP.

Trade Deadline
NJLCO : 7/15/2024 12:30 pm : link
I keep reading that we can fix something’s that are broken before the trade deadline. Can someone please tell me how that is going to work? My understanding is that we pretty much don’t have anything to give at this point.
Holmes is not a shut down closer and we all know that by now. He can’t be trusted period. Sorry to say Volpe is a good player but he’s not going to be great. DJ and Rizzo are both at the very backed of their respective careers.
Verdugo looks like a one and done season. Torres shouldn’t be playing period.
So how is this deadline going to help us at this point?
Anyone knows anything about the two pitchers they picked? Obviously
Jim in Hoboken : 7/15/2024 3:08 pm : link
stats mean squat, but it seems they are trying to be the smartest guy in the room again. With good reaosn that gets me nervous.

I really think there is no reason to play Torres anymore. He’a not winning us any games for this season and isn’t going to be back next year. Play Vivas, nothinf to lose. Rice and Wells need to play everyday.

And I can’t believe Stanton is going to be back before Dominguez. Get Verdugo out of there either way.

You're always pessimistic, Jim.

On the other hand, Keith Law was positive about the pick, and he's never shy about vocalizing if he thinks a team reached.

Quote:
26. New York Yankees: Ben Hess, RHP, Alabama
No. 24 on Law’s big board

Ben Hess was one of the most underrated starters in the draft class in my view, getting very little first-round buzz despite a full arsenal with multiple 55s or better and a big extension out over his front side. He may need to develop his changeup more, and I like that he added a two-seamer to keep hitters off the four-seamer as the season went on.

Alabama used him mostly for five-inning starts until late in the season, and in the postseason he pitched into the seventh a few times and held 94-95. I think he’s a mid-rotation starter.

Scouting report: Hess might be a starter at the next level, with the delivery and arsenal to do so, if he can hold his stuff deeper into games. The Tide only had him get more than 16 outs three times during the regular season, in his last three starts, when he did actually hold his velocity extremely well, still hitting 94-95 later in the outings. He’s mostly fastball-slider-curve, with an occasional changeup to lefties, and he’s added a two-seamer to the mix after going heavy with the four-seam earlier in the season.

He takes a huge stride toward the plate and finishes way out over his front side for maximum extension from his strong 6-5 frame. You can easily dream on him as a mid-rotation, workhorse starter, if you can get past the limited track record.

Hopefully we get dunedin's recap of the draft

As for Gleyber, he's gotten off the mat a little bit since the incident with Stroman in Toronto and had a good series in Baltimore. I'd like to see if he can build on that coming out of the break. The team is trying to win now, so they definitely have "something to lose." Vivas is a pretty marginal prospect, thinking he could be plugged in and even match Gleyber's limited production so far may be misguided
