One of my best friends is too. I'd be happy for him of they won, despite my not liking England, even this group of players is really likeable.

That was nice

backbreaker for England, but not unexpected. Spain is totally dominating the ball. The whole game is being played in England's end.

came very close to equalizing at the end, but the Spanish goalie saved one header and then another immediately afterward in the same sequence was headed off the line by a Spanish defender.
A phenomenal Spanish team

Path to the championship was as hard as it gets:

Croatia
Italy
Germany

2007 Giants-like run!

Spain was so fun to watch. Love it when the most enjoyable team takes home the title.

I felt really bad for my British friend in Thailand at the moment. He woke up from his slumber just to watch a heart-breaking loss. He was kind of expecting a loss anyway though. It's not the result that's tough to stomach, but how it happened so late in the second half. I felt bad, and I'm not even an England fan!

True Dat. The whole thing was confusing to me. I think you might be right.
Kane was really a drag on England
Bobby Humphrey's Earpad : 7/14/2024 8:07 pm : link
Southgate has gotten to three straight semis and two finals, but tactically I don't know what he saw in Kane or Foden playing so many minutes.
Not what I wanted to see, but the better team won.

Congrats to the Spanish people on a fantastic double … Wimbledon and the Euro cup on the same day.

I believe this is the only tournament team to win all 7 games without even going to penalties. Tough road through and outscored the opponents 15-4. There's a good argument for this being the best tournament team going back to Pele's Brazil at least.

Brazil in 2002 World Cup? Spain was a very good team and deserved to win. But historically, it's just a good team, at least so far. They have many young players still developing.

Scary thing is this team will improve if healthy. Nico (22) and Yamine (17) will likely start together at Barcelona over the next two years learning to play with National team midfielders Pedri (21), Gavi (18), and Lopez (21). Pedri and Gavi are world class and likely Spanish National Team starters when healthy. Spain will benefit from a large group of starters playing together at the club level like '08-'12 Spain/Barca.

Having Rodri and Zubimendi as CDMs is an embarrassment of riches. They are likely around for two more World Cup cycles. Fabian Ruiz is underrated.

The two major weaknesses may be 1) replacing defensive starters because of age Carvajal will be 34/ upgrading the CB position and 2) find a striker.

That said, Spain has promising young defenders like Cubarsi, Fresneda, and Balde. Cubarsi has the potential to be a Spanish CB legend like Ramos and Puyol. He will add another deep lying playmaking threat in addition to his CB responsibilities. Fresneda has loads of talent and capability to replace the legend Carvajal.

Not sure about the striker position in '26 but with the likes of Olmo, Lopez, and maybe a more centrally played Lamine they may be able to mitigate weakness at the front of attack with a talented False 9.

Spain will rightfully be the favorites in '26. Then they can add their names to the list of great sides including their '08-'12 Spanish compatriots.
QUE VIVA ESPANA ! ! ! !

Very proud of my Spanish team... Only ticks up rom here
I was rooting for England
Blue92 : 7/15/2024 11:43 am : link
but that was a very impressive run by Spain and it's great that they did it by playing attractive, attacking football. Maybe it becomes a wider trend.

England also sort of shot themselves in the foot with their tactics. Too much Kane, not enough Cole Palmer, who looked great when he was in there.

In checking a little more, I think this falls under the professional status.
Given Rodri's omnipotence for City and Spain
Bobby Humphrey's Earpad : 7/15/2024 11:57 am : link
including player of the tournament for Spain, he should be a strong contender for the Ballon D'Or. Theo Zagorakis came in 5th in 2004 and he did not have the club season that Rodri has had. Plus if you saw how poor most of the other City players were outside of the Pepe construct, rodri's importance is even more strengthened.

It won't happen, but would be nice.

Oddschecker moved Rodri up to 3rd after yesterday. He's nearly level with Bellingham. Vinicius Jr. is the heavy favorite.

Gareth Southgate has resigned as England manager.

Over all done a good job, but I criticise him for having persisted with a clearly out of sorts Harry Kane. Should have dropped him for the semifinal and final. You can't carry a player against the best sides and that's what Southghate tried to do.
