Hola Mets fans! The Mets won’t be in action again for 4 more days. They’ll be in Miami to play the Marlins at 7 pm EDT on the 19th. We can chop it up on this thread until then. Please just remember to check out the threads linked below for
the Draft and
Minor League discussions respectively:
NFT: Mets Draft thread: July 14th to July 16th | Optimus-NY | 7/13/2024 | 11:52 am

The topics mentioned above can be discussed & read about on the threads mentioned above. Everything else is fair game here. Pete Alonso is the Mets’ lone All-Star representative. He’ll be competing in the Home Run Derby tonight at 8 pm EDT in Arlington. Click
HERE to read an article about it. Before the Home Run Derby starts Jose Iglesias will perform his hit song “OMG” live at Globe Life Field. Click
HERE to read nice article about it from MLB.com.
The All-Star Game will be televised on FOX tomorrow at 8 pm EDT. Nothing’s at stake except pride. Lindor and Nimmo were All-Star worthy, but they can get some rest instead and get ready to use their non-selections to the National League squad as motivation for the remainder of the season. The Mets sit at 49-46 and would be in the playoffs as the third Wildcard team in the N.L. if the season ended today.
Time is flying. They’ve played 95 games if the schedule, while most of their competitors have played more. The Mets have 67 games to go out and do their thing, but even more significantly, they have 11 games to play without a day off from July 19th until July 29th before the trade deadline arrives on July 30th. Any significant trades made by the Mets will likely be consummated as close to the trade deadline as possible, so keep that in mind. Feel free to read about it
HERE.
Feel free to share opinions about what the Mets could and should do at the deadline, the state of the bullpen, the series thread formats we’re using now, the impact of players coming off the injured list (e.g., Senga, Marte, & Reid-Foley), or anything else that strikes your fancy other than the draft and minor league stuff that already have their own threads going. The players need a break from the games and so do the fans I think. Hopefully the Mets stay comfortably above .500 & continue to give us something to root for over the course of the remaining two and a half months of the regular season and hopefully into the postseason.

Forget trade vs. re-sign for a minute. What are your thoughts about Alonso saying he won't participate in the HR Derby unless he's an All Star and then being named an All Star? To me, this is kind of embarrassing for MLB and the Mets. He is not an All Star this year and there are other Mets far more worthy. Does it really matter if he isn't in the HR Derby, considering he has all of 19 HRs, on pace for his lowest HR total in a healthy season.
I admit I may be biased because I am not overly impressed with him. Hitting HRs is really the only thing he does well, and even at that he is not on top of his game this year.
Nimmo and even Lindor are more deserving of the honor than Alonso, in my opinion.
BTW - We're PLENTY critical of Pete's performance this year. Check out our threads to see what we say, lol. He's been a disappointment this year and he's not gonna get what he wants out on the open-market this off-season if he continues on this pace. The Mets have contingency plans if he leaves as a FA this off-season. Hopefully he improves and is willing to sign a shorter deal (5 or 6 years; perhaps even a games played based option for a 7th year).

i havent followed it too closely bc the entire ASG process seems like a joke but is it confirmed anywhere he did that?
lindor and nimmo definitely deserve the ASG over him, but even if he did that i dont think you can correlate one to the other, those guys deserve to be all stars over other players separate from him. walker got screwed directly by pete's inclusion, but MLB's crappy all star system i think owns the majority of the blame all around. there are what 8 phillies in the ASG? if all 15 teams need to be represented doesn't there almost have to be a cap on how many players of a certain team can go?

I don't remember Alonso saying he wouldn't participate in the HR Derby unless he was named an All Star. Where did you see this or hear about it? This is the first time I'm hearing about this. I don't think it's true.

Personally, I thought the offer he turned down in the off season was plenty fair. He isn't getting $40M+, I don't think. If his market isn't what he thought he would be, how high do you think the Mets go to keep him? Is it a priority to keep him? I would say no, but who knows? I also don't think he is the leader he thinks he is.
PITTSBURGH — Pete Alonso is waiting to find out his status for the All-Star Game before considering whether he will participate in the Home Run Derby.
The Mets first baseman said Friday that he is taking the same approach as last season, when he waited until the All-Star roster announcement before committing to his fourth straight Home Run Derby.
“If I’m selected to the All-Star team, then I am definitely open to doing it,” Alonso said, referring to the Home Run Derby. “It’s a super fun event.”

The Mets have exceeded expectations to this point, especially Bader, Manaea, Severino, and Vientos...They're 25-11 in their last 36 (almost 1/4 of the season)....and, they are playing competitive and entertaining baseball on a daily basis, which is great for we Met fans.
But (yes, I know the 2023 Arizona Diamondbacks), they aren't going to the WS this year, and I hope management is looking towards 2025/2026 for when they can legitimately compete with the Dodgers and Phillies (and Braces with Strider and Acuman)....I think Stearns and his team have convinced Cohen that this is the way to proceed.
A solid relief pitcher or two (not cheap) would greatly enhance this team's chances of playing important September games...Right field? Marte is a question mark, Taylor is not an every day answer, McNeil is also not a great option every day, but the Mets are scoring plenty of runs without much production from RF....so how important is it to find a RF for the next 67 games?
In the perfect world, the Mets squeeze into the play-offs...and then sign Soto in the off season.
That makes signing Alanso less important, if you can, even better.
Really what the Mets need is a true # 1 pitcher...many teams say the same thing, but even if Senga is anywhere close to his 2023 self, the starting rotation is mediocre....
And, Quintana is expendable in my humble opinion...
lol. Ok there. Discussion over.
I wasn't averse to them selling at this time last month. I still think they'll just opt to make deals on the margins and add a bullpen arm or two that won't cost any significant prospects. Perhaps taking back some money might be what gets them someone. I wish there was a club out there that would release players like the Angels did last year.
Angels place 5 veterans on waivers after buying at trade deadline, report says: Trade deadline acquisitions Lucas Giolito, Randal Grichuk and Reynaldo Lopez reportedly were among the players placed on waivers - By Eric Mullin • Published August 29, 2023 • Updated on August 29, 2023 at 6:36 pm
yeah i mean nobody can control how MLB takes things. if that factors into their selection process, which is already stupid, then it's even stupider than it seems and that's entirely on them.
i know there's never a way to please everyone but their current selection process appears broken even before a player makes an innocuous comment to the press. what is alonso supposed to say? he is obviously going to get asked "are you doing the HR derby?". i think it's pretty natural to not want to commit one way or another before knowing if you are going to be at the ASG or are instead considering whether or not to take advantage of the 1 break in the season.

It may or may not be intended as a shake down. But, some believe MLB essentially took it that way. Maybe you're right and this is just sensationalizing something insignificant by the media.
I heard the same thing. Don't know whether it's true or not. I didn't take it as a "shake down." I think that's ridiculous.
Personally, I find it asinine when players who aren't even All-Stars participate in the HR derby, three-point shooting contest, etc. And I think that's what it was. If Alonso did say this, all MLB would have had to do is have someone else in the HR derby. Not too hard.

So: Why?
Thinking they are either making room at Syracuse to promote someone or they have another trade in the works. The Mets don’t need the “cash considerations” so they must need to open up playing time and a roster spot. But for who?
I thought they might trade McNeill and promote Acuña but this makes that slightly less likely—unless Jett Williams is going to be playing for Syracuse soon.

Jose Quintana

senga making another rehab start so i assume DP will come after that, then at some point on senga's next day they will turn into a 6 man rotation.
last year in august/september he threw 68 innings in 11 starts. his 39 innings in sept were the most he threw in a single month all year.
he's currently 83 innings away, so as long as he doesn't surprisingly make any big league starts in july mets should be in the clear.

It's believed that much like the just acquired Logan Porter than Bannon had an opt out. This wasn't a trade precursor as Bannon wasn't even on the 40 man

Wonder if something happened to Manaea?

Wonder if something happened to Manaea?
Or maybe they just didn't want the two LHP back to back

Maybe but they just realized that now? Sammon also mentioned they wanted the 2 LHP to go against the Yanks since it worked last time.
