This was worse than Fergie.

I can’t really include Carl Lewis because this is an actual “singer”.

- Charlie Steiner on Sportscenter (with Jack Edwards laughing uncontrollably) referred to Lewis as . . .

"Francis Scott off Key"

This is all in a youtube video of it

That's what you get for watching the HR Derby.

Who seriously watches that anymore?

Last time I watched it was the Yankee Stadium one in 2008.

What a pathetic excuse. Gregg Allman, Jim Morrison, Janis Joplin and dozens of other musical artists have performed drunk for their entire careers and never gave a performance like that.

Every karaoke singer calls BS. Many people sing better while drunk.

I watch it every year. The rule changes have made it fun again
I thought people

She was drunk

and she is checking into rehab per her X post. Who knows if that is true, but if so, good to see she is getting help.
Whoever hired her should be fired immediately,

I guess some people are used to it and some people aren't. If she's truly being honest, has an alcohol problem, and gets help, then I'm happy for her and hope she finds the help she needs. If she's cynically using it as an excuse, then that really sucks for a number of reasons. Only she really knows.

Moreover, I guess you can take it too far. I have to imagine Namath did plenty of drunk interviews before the Kissing Suzy Kolber one, but it was pretty clear there that he had lost control. Who knows.

This is just stupid. How the hill would the person that hired her know she’d get all shit faced before the performance? She’s done a ton of performances and never acted/sounded like that.

If you hire someone and they come in drunk to work one day, you’re ok getting fired? This thing of blaming everyone else but ourselves for our actions is asinine

Maybe my point is too much for you to understand. This is not a normal every day job. This is a live performance of our country’s anthem in front of a national audience. Whoever hired her clearly did not do their job. If she checked herself in for help as advertised, her behavior just didn’t appear out if the blue. It should have been flagged by someone.
I haven't piped in...
allstarjim : 7/17/2024 1:11 am : link
But she is a good singer. I thought that perhaps she had strained her vocal chords prior to this performance. I felt bad for her, but it sounds like alcohol was the culprit. If that's true, I hope she gets the help she needs. This actually good be a great thing for her. Many people need something to happen, whether it's a DUI, public embarrassment, or a traumatic event while intoxicated to seek help.

Out of the things that could happen to her to get her to seek help, a bad anthem rendition at the homerun derby should rank pretty low on the consequences meter if she takes this opportunity to improve her life. Best of wishes for her.

Well, nobody is going to say that as an excuse unless it was legitimate. It's not easy to admit you have a problem with substance abuse, especially so this publicly. And alcohol affects people physiologically differently. And as we know, there are different levels of drunk. She might've nailed it as a level 6 drunk, and we could see what we saw as a level 9 or 10 drunk. Not saying that was the case here, only she knows for sure. But I think when you come out publicly and admit a problem, I take the side of compassion. Everyone is about to forget this in about 5 minutes.

The Sportscenter version, which most people have seen, spliced together the worst moments for maximum laughs.

Fair game, but in the full version, which is also on youtube, you can at least see/hear how Lewis convinced himself he could do it.
