But ultimately left decision up to football people. Too many people living in fantasy land. I'm sure everyone here would own a billion dollar company and think they'd have zero thoughts or interactions with the people running things or zero care about a player's popularity. Most people living in the real world not some social media fantasy should get that.
I dont understand the complaints or what people expect.
If anyone on this board was the owner of the Giants (including me), they would come of A LOT worse than Mara with their opinions.
He is not being a "my way or the highway guy."
He is also not an absentee owner which he has every right not to be, this team is not owned by an investment group.
He also does not want to look like a cut throat, I dont care about the players, so some of this is by design in the editing of the show.
He wants to portrayed as a owner who likes his players, he wants to tell guys like Saquan that I really like you, wish you could have been here but I am letting JS make the ultimate decision.
Even though he made comments about keeping Saquan, once he was told that they were moving on, he didnt put up a fight, he just agreed that he thought the Giants would be fine without him.
The best he has done recently was getting a guy like JS instead of having a softy like Gettleman who probably just did whatever the Mara questioned or whatever Gettleman gut told him. So he got a guy who gets data to support his opinions, lets the owner say their piece and lets the GM make the choice.

I dont see the big deal from some people.
You're not incorrect (sorry for the double negative).
However, it's his instincts that bother me (against with my tiresome Constanza analogy). This goes back to Coughlin-McAdoo-Shurmur-Judge and Gettleman. It goes back to his needless public comments about players when the Giants were in the midst of sensitive personnel decisions. And lurking in the background of all of this was the botched 2023 offseason. Throw in Hard Knocks proof that he is putting his hand on the scale, and the reaction is understandable.
That all said, Schoen got his way. At least this time.
Shedding light on some of the pressures the front office is getting from the Mara family (John and Tim)
And we're seeing the tame, edited stuff. Can't imagine what they wouldn't allow the cameras to catch.
In the Maras defense - this offseason - it appears they did support Schoen's decisions, despite their objects - kudos their I suppose.
But one wonders - last year, and the Gettleman, Reese, Acorsi years prior - the whole "Giants Way GM" hires - what did the Mara dynamic look like? I'm guessing a lot more hands on - Especially with Chris Mara.
I dont understand the complaints or what people expect.

Yes In a perfect world it would be great that our 70 year old owner was more in touch with how NFL team needs to be built in today's landscape, I agree. But like I said, there is a lot editing on this and we might not see the whole picture, lets say there was footage of Mara saying, Saquan is crazy if he thinks we are paying him that kind of money, do think that Mara would want that cut from the footage?
But I am totally OK with owner stating his opinion and letting the football guys make the decision.
I am probably more concerned with Tim McDonnell since he comes off as John's mouth and ears in the day to day stuff. However, cant use Hard Knocks as full proof. There somethings watching Joe and his process, its possible that he like the devil's advocate approach and wants someone to give perceptive of how a decision would look to in the public eye.
that's what bothers me. He just seems like the guy who shrugs his shoulders a lot, and doesn't have any real conviction about anything other than not wanting to lose players. He also looks like he's aged a lot.
Ultimately I see an old man who is losing/lost his fastball. Anyone with elderly family members can empathize. He's still sharp and lucid, but clearly not as sharp and clear thinking as man one, two, three decades younger.
I don't doubt that he has always roamed the hallways like he's shown on Hard Knocks and likely has had influence directly and indirectly in key decisions. That's his right as an owner. But any influence coming from him now is only a hindrance because the analytical reasoning is not there. You see it even in the made-for-TV portrayal of the Barkley interactions.

I think you're pretty spot on with this assessment. But to add a point of emphasis to your last sentence - this dynamic that we are witnessing between Schoen & Mara is in the context of the team still reeling from an absolutely calamitous season.
In terms of influence, the Mara/McDonnell faction should currently be at its nadir because they are the ones who championed Jones/Saquon the most and it very obviously blew up in everybody's faces.
I believe that what is hanging over all of the discussions that we're seeing on Hard Knocks is an unspoken, but understood, truth that last off-season was a disaster and we can't repeat it.
But what happens if the Giants are improved? Will Mara be emboldened to push his opinions on personnel more forcefully?
If you believe the show is authentic, any doubt that the buck stops with him has been taken out behind the woodshed.
This is a family business, and members of the family are going to make the final call on the big ticket items. And there will be breadsticks and endless pasta bowls.
The way the NFL operates, the Giants can (and have) stumble into stretches of good football. But the family influence will always be a hindrance.
At this point I'm trying to stop being angry about it and just come to accept it already. I want to enjoy Giants football again, even if they insist on making it difficult.
I started that this winter...but then again my office is frigid most days. We have 2 temps in both Winter and Summer; boiling or freezing.
In winter, either the heat is blasting and un bearable or it's turned off and then building is cold and drafty. In summer, either the central air is on and freezing or it's off and unbearably hot.

I was just implying the decisions made probably fell into one of those 2 categories.

Mara can't even regulate the temperature in his own building correctly!

NTTAWWT. Fans often are out of touch, overly opinionated, etc. That's why we have WFAN and BBI! It's a good thing a lot of the time. Except when it gets toxic, repetitive, and ignorant.
The fact is that absolutely no one on this website knows what goes into owning and running an NFL franchise. Unless Jeffrey Lurie is a lurker or something like that.
Durrrr but I run a successful company! I run a sports blog! I buy season tickets! Stop meddling! You're a billionaire just let "JOE SCHOEN" run your family business.
Franchises have bad stretches. The Giants have 4 Lombardi's and made the playoffs 2 years ago. Stop whining and thinking you know more than you do. Especially based on a few edited moments from HBO. Root for the laundry or don't.
The same people obsessing over this shit were blabbering weeks ago about how this show would be a distraction and NOT WHAT THIS FRANCHISE NEEDS! Now you can't get enough.
It is complete lunacy to think the person cutting the checks wouldn't be in the picture.
My impression of this thread is sad and pathetic. My impression of "Mara on hardknocks" - since we are not given much - is that he is dressed fresh and ready for the golf course, which is where I am sure a lot of you want him to be!
Extremely nice guy who would not be in charge of anything if it weren't for nepotism.
He is probably a great neighbor, friend, father, uncle etc. However, if he owned a business in any other industry besides the NFL (where you can be awful and still make $100s of millions) he would cost people jobs.

Statements are calculated? I for one think mara was ready to move on from Barkley yet saud the opposite to put a band aid on the wound. He did the same with Odell Beckham

I have actually been wondering thru the whole episode if we were actually seeing something of a good cop, bad cop routine. What surprised me about the whole Saquon sequence was that for all intents and purposes we saw neither hide nor hair of Daboll nor for that matter any of the coaches. And there really is no way that Schoen or the front office is going to make that kind of decision over the objections of the coaching staff.
The reality is that Saquon was a team leader who was very popular with the rest of his teammates, and i suspect, especially the black players who might have been a tad upset that the reasonably productive black guy didn't get paid while the less productive white guy did. So Schoen, who doesn't really have to deal with the players, takes the hit and makes it his decision, while Mara ends up looking a little more pro-player. What we all tend to forget at times is that in the end all these are people with feelings, not automatons whose only goal it is to please fans.

So is your position that the numerous consultants and analysts are wasting their time? Because the only way to understand a business is to be an executive in that business?
You and others seem to like this strawman that people that criticize the Mara’s expect business owners to be uninvolved nobody expects that. They do expect leaders to be self aware enough to recognize when their contributions aren’t helping. John Mara so clearly unaware of that it is alarming. That even his best public foot forward there is not even an iota of recognizable value to his contributions.
And oh boy are the markers of the opposite present in the results of the team he leads. You are the insane person if you don’t think people are capable of evaluating that, we have eyes and ears. If he was the CEO of a public company he’d be out of a job. If his board wasn’t made up of his family he’d be out of a job. Your position is a crap one and the fact that you take it with such disrespect to the legitimately disappointed fans is embarrassing for YOU.
None of us can do anything, none of us expect our words to change his job or his behavior. But you do not need football expertise to know how badly this person deserves criticism.
Its not even good acting IMO - but this is a website filled with people who talk about the storyline going on with WWF. John Mara smarter than BBI? Perhaps.

Smarter than BBI as a whole...no. But he is definitely smarter than certain fans oftheteam.

Apparently posted before TG had his morning coffee. Or maybe just another empty, vacuous, dare I say sophomoric insult, that seems to be TG's go-to response when his narrative gets challenged. Smarter than JM or anyone with half a brain over 12. Likely not!
I don't get this line of thinking that Mara is immune to criticism or scorn. He's the owner. The team has-for a season here or there-been dreadful for going on a decade. The buck stops with him. And a lot of his decisions have been horrible.
Of course the CEO is going to be judged on the performance of his company/organization. That comes with the territory. If you don't want or can't handle the criticism, step down.
Football is entertainment. The product has been dreadful. We have fans who are still in denial about just how bad it has been. The Giants have become a national joke again. The ONLY constant the past 12 years has been ownership.

Can we do better....sure....but we can do far worse, too.

Confused: "instead of having a softy like Gettleman who probably just did whatever the Mara questioned or whatever Gettleman gut told him."
So Gettleman did whatever Mara wanted? Or Gettleman did what his gut told him? Those seem like opposites.
I was just implying the decisions made probably fell into one of those 2 categories.
He allows Schoen to make the decisions.
I don't really see a problem.
I'd be willing to bet that if Mara did NOT offer his opinions, some BBIers would claim that Mara seems uninterested in the team's success.

A down vest inside an office building all day.
I started that this winter...but then again my office is frigid most days. We have 2 temps in both Winter and Summer; boiling or freezing.

Mara can't even regulate the temperature in his own building correctly!
Guess Saquon wasn’t a “big ticket item”😂😂
Just wow.
Really old people.
You ain't kidding. Sometimes mods even try to run me off the site a few months before parroting the exact things I was posting. It's tough!
I can't think of the perfect word, but my one word so far would be 'unhelpful' - speaking specifically about the content in hard knocks.
Everything I've seen thus far of Mara has met expectations.
He is probably a great neighbor, friend, father, uncle etc. However, if he owned a business in any other industry besides the NFL (where you can be awful and still make $100s of millions) he would cost people jobs.
And gentlemen in England now-a-bed Shall think themselves accurs'd they were not here, And hold their manhoods cheap whiles any speaks
That fought with us upon Saint Crispin's day.

They have had 1 winning season in 10 years.
They are 37-77 over the past 7 years.

Likely not!
Football is entertainment. The product has been dreadful. We have fans who are still in denial about just how bad it has been. The Giants have become a national joke again. The ONLY constant the past 12 years has been ownership.
Stop with the silliness.
