After episode 3, you kept hearing that if Barkley kills it in Philly, the Giants will have egg on their face.
I think it's a logical error that you can take Barkley's production in Philly and transport it over to the Giants. Different scheme, different personnel. In fact it's perfectly feasible that Barkley could have the same 900 yard production season had he re-signed with the Giants and have a 1300+ year with the Eagles.
It's even challening to look at the players added this off-season like Burns and the OL and say that the net add of them offsets the RB production loss because you have guys like Nabers in the mix now. I do think if you try to distill it down to would you rather pay Barkley or Burns, it's always edge, so I think the Giants made the right decision for where they are as a team on where they need to prioritize spend. They don't have the luxury for RB.
I know this will never happen becasue the media needs to talk about things, but Barkley's production should have no impact on whether Schoen made the right move or not. It was the right move at the right time.
Most REALLY smart football people (not the general consensus or social media) realize this could be a win/win/win triple scenario.
Win for the Giants.
Win for Barkley.
Win for the Eagles.
This is a plausible scenario:
The Giants allocate that cap money to other needs at more premium positions.
Barkley has a resurgence after he gets the contract he wanted and shows he still has some years left in the NFL.
The eagles as a contender get a workhorse back who will make a lot of plays for them while they still try and strike in their playoff window.
Fans and media (no offense to anyone here) have a tendency of talking about every situation in sports without any nuance whatsoever. Such is life...if you're smarter than that and don't feed in, who cares? It's why I don't consume the stuff at the national level or social media.
+1, doesn't matter at all.
Time will tell.
I'd say the Eagles have more on the line. This was an all-in type move and they just had an end of season collapse, Kelce retire, and Lane Johnson declining. If Barkley doesn't stay healthy and crush D'Andre Swift's year last year (1050 yards and 5 TDs on the ground, 4.6 YPC, 214 yards in the air, year younger) they look like idiots.
It is extremely rare a team looks foolish for not handing out a mega deal to a RB.
Because we have to face them twice/year. that's why. If he has success, he'll have it at our expense. If he stinks, we celebrate, simple as that.
The usual pattern of these guys trying to get revenge is their first season is good and their second season makes the Eagles regret ever signing them. Like Bradberry.
I don't think the Giants should have spent the money on him, but Eagles fans just think Giants fans are saying that as cover.
Barkley, if healthy, will have a really good season in Philly. Nothing we can do about it. He never had a good line while with the Giants, now he does.
Second, we will now have an opportunity to see Barkley playing behind a strong offensive line and quarterback as well as among a number of superior playmakers. For the past five years, all we have heard is how Barkley has underperformed and is nowhere near the player he was expected to be. And this is largely true. With the Giants offensive line and quarterback as well as among a group of playmakers that can best be described as atrocious during his tenure here, it is not at all surprising. So if he remains healthy this year, and I acknowledge that is a legitimate "if", I believe Barkley will demonstrate what might have been if the Giants had a clue about effective roster building.
Third, it has precisely highlighted on Hard Knocks the dynamic that led to the galactically stupid decision by Schoen to cave in to DJ's fleecing of this franchise last year. Clearly, Mara's passive aggression about needing to keep both DJ and Saquon was not handled correctly by Schoen and he now has the grotesque scars to prove it. Thankfully, Schoen ignored Mara's silly "...Barkley is the most popular BY FAR" nonsense and did the right thing in letting him go. So it reveals at the very least that perhaps Schoen is learning how to best save Mara from himself, a critical attribute of any GM who wants this franchise to win championships again.
Hopefully, Schoen survives Mara's wrath when Barkley is the all-pro running back for the Eagles and leads them to a super bowl.
it didnt matter any more or less than jason kelce, fletcher cox, ajb, or devonta smith were also really good players.
anything philly does well matters more than a non-division team the same way the mets would have preferred zack wheeler went anywhere but philly/atlanta or if the yankees had to lose soto they would prefer it to be anywhere but Boston or ALe.
i dont know why some of these very basic concepts are used as indicators that the giants are somehow doing things wrong.
Barkley never should have been a giant at the outset. Not signing him to an expensive second contract was 100% the correct move regardless of the eagles outcome.
The RB production was dreadful when SB was out last season.
I was fine with moving on and hopefully the offense sees significant improvements.
Take it from this angle -- the Cowboys offer slightly more than the Dolphins to trade up for a draft pick. Who do you trade with?
I think you can approach his representation and say we're going to tag you, and the only condition we put on negotiations is it's outside of the division.
You can go negotiate with the other 28 teams, and we won't be a blocker when it comes to compensation.
Being a GM is hard work. I thought it was a little wimpy to hear Schoen complain about the negotiations with Barkley last year. Buck up little bronco, you're in charge now.
He would DEFINITELY get injured if he tried that.
Take it from this angle -- the Cowboys offer slightly more than the Dolphins to trade up for a draft pick. Who do you trade with?
To me, this would depend on the overall fairness of both offers. If both offers are basically in range of the generally accepted draft pick value, I'd prefer to do business with the Dolphins so as not to help the Cowboys. But if we're talking a Herschel Walker trade, I'd rather fleece the Cowboys than the Dolphins.

Yeah of course. Same as if the Giants franchised Barkley and the Eagles offered a great sum to acquire him.
My overall point is the divisional system is set up in a way where the mathematical competition is just too great to ignore the impact. You are competing against 3 teams for the a guaranteed bid in the tournament. And you play 12% of your games against that team.
You should always factor not helping them in your calculation.
I don't think the Giants should have spent the money on him, but Eagles fans just think Giants fans are saying that as cover.
The reply to that is if Hurts is such a great QB and Philly is so loaded on offense that by did they need Barkley. He's a good player. But half the guy he was is rookie year. And zero chance he plays all 17 games and isn't dinged up at some point.
Philly is going to miss Cox and Kelce. A lot. Both on and off the field. Maybe they can replace Cox or make it a little closer but Kelcie ?
At this point Barkley's name is bigger than his actual production, he is one of those "stars" of the league who had a great rookie year and now everyone thinks thats who he ha sbeen his entire career..
All that matters is winning.
Daboll (to my chagrin) wants a passing offense. (I always want a power running/play action offense in the outdoor northeast.) Daboll wants to sit in the shotgun and pick you apart, and he is building his team that way.
So if you ask Brian Daboll from a resource allocation standpoint where he wants to go, what kind of RB do you think he needs?
I'd guess a selfless, all-around player who can pass block and be an extension of the Offensive Line, competent in the short passing game and can keep the offense on schedule & grind out tough/situational yards. RBBC is fine too. It's a hard-hat position.
About the last thing he needs building a passing offense is a big ticket, big ego RB who you feel pressure to build the offense around, and who doesn't exactly love sticking his nose in there pass blocking. Isn't the toughest situational runner. Doesn't do a great job keeping the O on schedule. Has weird lapses in the passing game.
Really - Barkley is a nightmare for what Daboll's trying to do. He was absent during the discussions on HK but I can't imagine he was pounding the table to re-sign him.
2nd and 12 from Barkley.
But it will also depend on how the Giants offense looks...
