let's hope the intensity picks up this year. Lesson learned from last year was the team wasn't really ready when game action started.
My hope is Daboll learned a lesson from last year’s training camp

'not ready' for first week of the season is a little overblown. Maybe to some degree, but Dallas is and has been 3 times more talented than the Giants for years now. The Giants had no chance even if they were playing at their best and 'most ready.' And then went on to lose to five more much better teams and barely squeaked by the Cardinals.

Keeping the starters away from any of the pre-season games was another huge mistake! I hope they don't do that again.

People say this, but look at the Giants record against Dallas over the past 10 years.

It's not readiness, it's roster.
Part of his job, but imagine having press time
mfsd : 7/20/2024 9:32 pm : link
every day there’s practice is something Daboll (and most coaches) hate.

Daily repeat of dull questions like “do you think scoring more points is important this season?” and gotcha questions designed to try and get him to say something controversial, as in “you gave X player 2 reps at that position yesterday - does that mean you’re disappointed in Y player so far?”

Coaches doing their press conferences before practice each day makes the Q & A even worse. All we ever get is “we’ll have to get out on the field today and see how it goes”. No matter what the questions are. They should do them after practice. Not that we’d get great answers then either but at least it takes away the lame escape hatch of not having practiced yet

Our 3 day mini-camp really had one day. The second day was 1 hour and the 3rd day was scrapped.
Why such short practices?
NYDCBlue : 7/21/2024 3:07 pm : link
1 and a half hours, the an hour and 45 mins, followed by two two hour days?

Did we learn a lesson from last year and being utterly unprepared? Sorry, but from the outside in, this all appears like "light work."
Really worried about Neal now
NYDCBlue : 7/21/2024 3:13 pm : link
If he is going to make the monumentaly historic jump up in play from an unplayable all time bust to at least, just below average, he is going to need as much practice as possible. 4 or five hours a week ain't going to be enough to correct all his flaws.

You do realize that there is a CBA that now strictly regulates how much teams can practice, right? Do you honestly think this is just the Giants deciding to be soft and they don’t need/want to practice?
Allowable practice hours are more limited in the first week
shyster : 7/21/2024 5:43 pm : link
of camp than in following weeks. Two hours of full speed practice on a given day is the max in the first week. Anything else has to be a walk through.

Education about CBA limitations on training camp hours is available at pages 162-63, Sections 6 and 7, entitled "Five Day On-Field Acclimation Period" and "Conduct of Practices".

Was the team really unprepared for the start of the season last year?
Metnut : 7/22/2024 10:49 am : link
They seemed to start out well in Daboll's first year. IMO, the bad start last year was heavily influenced by Thomas and other OL starters getting hurt right away. The unit was already lacking depth and it got seriously exposed and fast by losing its best player right off the bat.

The team also built the entire offense around Waller (who by all objective accounts looked like a beast in camp) and he ends up getting hurt a few days before the season. Maybe that was a poor decision, but playing time in preseason games has nothing to do with that.

I'm not sure that playing the starters a few extra series in preseason games would've salvaged last year's mess. The team overachieved in Daboll's first year, and the weakest position on the roster was gutted by injuries. Many of the guys who ended up playing on the OL did get a lot of playing time in the preseason since they were the backups.

Good point, also the starters will get plenty of reps against other teams during joint scrimmages too and so the pre-season games will not be as critical for the starters.

The entire Giants roster reports for training camp today. They’ll do physicals and have their conditioning test, so we should learn about any players on the PUP/NFI lists later. Biggest player to watch is Evan Neal, who appeared to have a setback with his surgically repaired ankle in the spring.

Has better come outta the gates in July with passion. It’s the only way they will be competitive. They simply don’t have the overall talent ( see QB) to match with the elite in the NFC which is disappointing as the NFC is relatively week.

Any idea of the time we expect to hear?
