Torres is a pending FA, McMahon has a team friendly contract with 3.5 seasons left (and was assured by the Rockies he wouldn't be traded at the deadline).

Another guy I'd like the Mets to look at.

Mason Miller and Tarik Skubal.

Mets do not have the prospect capital and team depth to land Skubal. Orioles have high end talent and depth through the major league roster and farm to give up 1 or 2 more guys like Mayo or Basallo.

Sure, but until they're willing to part ways with Mayo or Basallo or anyone else anyone can beat any offer.

I think the big question is if Rubenstein will be a spender where Angelos was notoriously not. Skubal is not a rental, but he can be a FA after 2 years.

Long time in MLB years, but not that long really.

I do have to admit I don't see why the A's would even consider trading Miller or the Tigers Skubal.

both are young enough and early in the arbitration years or even pre-arb for Miller I think. So I don't get why they are so bent on trading them.
PJ
GF1080 : 7/22/2024 1:24 pm : link
I don't get it either. Miller I can at least understand since RP are so volatile year to year but for Skubal it makes no sense. You have a young ace and want to win in the next few years. Keep building the team up around him and sign him.

I think the new Orioles owner will spend more than previous. If they do get Skubal they probably sign him as the ace and let Burnes walk but having them together for this year should help a run. Orioles have too many guys and can't play them all so I would think they'll definitely have to move some of them.
Dodgers are in panic mode
5BowlsSoon : 7/22/2024 4:13 pm : link
Most of their SP is injured…..their closer ((Evan Phillips) has lost it……they don’t have a CF who can hit and play good OF…..and all they can do is mash HRs, which usually doesn’t win them playoff games against top pitching. Sure, they can mash against mediocre pitchers but the playoffs are different. The Philly Phillies don’t have a weak link starting. Even Arizona starters trouble LA.

When you spend all the money they did, you have to win it all, so yeah, they are going all in to get decent pitchers to fill their void.
Any news on when things are gonna pick up?
Optimus-NY : 7/24/2024 10:43 am : link
I would imagine with draft signings starting to wind down (the deadline to sign drafted players is on August 1st) that trade winds would start to pick up in the next few days, or are teams still playing chicken with one another with only 6 more days to go before the trade deadline arrives on the 30th?

DanMetroMan : 7/24/2024 10:56 am : link
As good as he is, the Reds should probably sell high on Fernando Cruz. He's 34 years old, if teams are desperate for bullpen help they likely can get a very nice return

makes it very tricky.

Truly one of the best hitters any of us will watch in our lifetime. If the Yankees had good reason to believe that he either doesn't want to sign here or that they don't want to pay what it will take (which is an absolutely unacceptable answer, to be clear), then trading him right now would be the right move. Beyond he and Judge, this roster is weak.

But, their #1 priority should be NOT doing anything that poisons the well with Soto.

Soto aside, I'm not convinced that there is a ton out there that makes sense for the Yankees other than a series of moves to improve a shitty bullpen.

What they need offensively is infield, and there doesn't seem to be a lot to get excited about there. McMahon is a perfect fit but isn't on the market by all indications. Rengifo is having a nice season but the profile isn't exciting and one could see the guy turning back into the pumpkin he's always been at any moment.

Andrew Vaughn could be a nice speculative add if the price isn't crazy. Has always had potential, his surface stats significantly lag his expected, and he's under control for 2 more years of what should be very reasonable arbitration. So this pairs nicely with an astronomical Soto re-sign.

bigbluehoya : 7/26/2024 2:25 pm : link
and decided to spend 5 minutes looking at Rengifo a little closer.

Good god, I hope they stay away (or give up extremely little value).

This is one of the worst batted ball profiles I've looked at in forever, and the plate approach does nothing to offset it. He's truly in the midst of one of the luckiest hitter seasons I've seen.

(just an opinion, of course. but if you believe in data at all, it is clear as day)

that was floating out there yesterday before i mentioned it so i cant claim credit for that. both the rogers are all me though if that were to happen, along with the idea of eating a ton of SFG $ to incentivize them to deal w/ mets to get under lux tax.

dan will know this better than me but id imagine they wont if it burns his ability to get them the extra draft pick for winning a rookie award.

i think tb is just maximizing a deadline where there arent many sellers. good news for mets bc probably means fairbanks will be traded somewhere.
i assume this would be more relevant to any rental trades vs taillon
Eric on Li : 7/28/2024 3:07 pm : link
hard to see cubs trading anyone with multiple years of control.

Jeff Passan
@JeffPassan
Just because the Cubs are considering moving players from this current roster doesn’t mean they’re selling. Just as because they acquired Isaac Paredes doesn’t mean they’re buying. Modern baseball is a game about opportunity — the furthest thing from a binary. It is a fundamental tenet to understand how teams operate and what motivates them. There can be buyers and sellers, yes, but ultimately teams view themselves as value gatherers, and the only question is whether they’re gathering that value for today or down the road.

Today the #Cubs reportedly acquired 3B Isaac Paredes ($53.8M) from the #Rays in exchange for UT Christopher Morel ($22.7M) and RHPs Hunter Bigge ($0.2M) and Ty Johnson (not yet in system).

The deal is rejected by our model as an underpay by Chicago.
Baseball Trade Values

This is a head-scratcher for Tampa Bay. Bigge and Johnson aren't nothing, but the trade is largely a swap of Paredes and Morel, and Paredes has been a significantly better player (9.4 career fWAR compared to 2.9 for Morel).
Baseball Trade Values

Both are 25 years old. Morel does have one more year of team control than Paredes, and will be cheaper (Paredes is a Super 2 and will see his arbitration salaries climb in years 3 and 4). But the talent gap is too large for the salary difference to bridge.

Yanks are going to have to overpay for some relief arms/bat or try and make what they have work.

I am ok with an overpay as opposed to standing pat. Either way Cashman will get killed, but nobody wants to really make a deal this year it seems.
