We lost the last Baltimore game on two errors. Does not matter what Hplmes did. He basically got 4 outs that inning. He is not at all perfect, but he got two balls that should have been caught and game ended.
Torres' boot in that inning is along the same lines. You cannot give teams 4 outs. You cannot load the bases twice with one out and get nothing. Even two on and one out and nothing.

The Yankees don't teach and stress situational hitting. They teach and stress trying to hit HRs when there are guys on. How many times do they load the bases with no outs and not score. Ben Ruta was right. It works great against average and bad pitching. It's an abstract failure when facing good pitching (Rays, Astros).
When facing Pedro in his prime, any chance you had to get even one run you should do it. Do it 5 times in a game and you will win way more than you lose.
This is the reason the Yankees can make the playoffs every year and then fail miserably against top pitching. I truly believe this is the result of Hal mandating they always make the playoffs for financial reasons.
P.S. - at least Boone sat LeMahieu. Let's hope that's not just a one day thing.

I will simply say that you have no idea what they teach. They did change whatever they were doing prior to this season if it wasn't last season.

Hal is of course "mandating" making the playoffs. All teams do. Whomever is making personnel decisions is the issue. It has been going on like this since 2017 or so.

Jim in Hoboken : 7/21/2024 4:57 pm : link
to play it and it can field a playoff team. The problem is Hal the Unready doesn't care enough to ask for more. Look at the Dodgers, they are still looking for big names on the trade market after the off-season. They can easily use all the injuries as an excuse, but of course they won't do that. Cashman will be dumpster diving before the trade deadline, I don't even know if he can pull off big names unless he includes Dominguez.

That's why the Dodgers already outdraw the Yanks on the road, and that's why their revenue will outpace ours soon.

I don't think this team is watchable until the Martian comes back. I can't believe Stanton is coming back before Dominquez.

We certainly know what Ben Ruta said a year ago about what they teach guys in the minors. They did drills where if you didn't hit a HR you lost. There was absolutely no effort put into teaching or emphasizing situational hitting or fundamentals. The focus was all about lifting the ball and exit velo.

There is no excuse for seeing so many guys strike out with the bases loaded and no one out, followed by a GDP because you have a team with so little speed. Shorten your swing and hit into a double play if you have to with no outs. That results is light years better than getting no runs in that situation.

Hal mandates making the playoffs for revenue reasons more so than having a chance to win a title. Is it a coincidence they have not been to the WS since George died?

And they didn't change what they were doing after last year, they simply got two guys who are better at making contact (and traded away 7 of their top 8 young pitchers to do it). And Cashman told us all how great they are at developing young players. So then why have the Yankees refused to replace Torres and LeMahieu who are producing nothing? Let Cabrera play every day. Would Peraza hit worse than LeMahieu? Hell, even if he hits .180, at least he can run and is a better fielder. Why didn't Vivas get a game when he was up? Why do you pick up Davis instead of giving one of your own guys a chance? Maybe because you haven't developed a corner infielder since ... Mattingly (And Pagliarula at 3rd)? Think about THAT.

And this has been going on longer than since 2017. This stretch from 2000 is the worst stretch in the team's history since the 19-teens. One title. But because they make the playoffs most years (much easier now than it used to be with expanded playoffs) many fans think they are successful. They haven't played in a WS since 2009, and that's the only one in the last 20 years. The Red Sox have won four titles since 2000. The Yanks have one once.

People need to stop marveling at HR distance and exit velocity. Give me 9 guys who hit 20 HRs and know how to drive in a run from third with no outs and how to advance runners and not strike out and they will win way more than they lose (remember the 1995 to 2000 teams?). I'd love to see the TV and radio people start being as critical of striking out with the bases loaded and no outs more than they gush about exit velo. Three times this weekend Soto stood at home and watched a double hit the wall. Who cares if every run is driven in by a ground ball if the team wins.

Three reasons:

(1) Cashman
(2) Cashman
(3) Cashman

Ohtani hit a 473ft HR vs Crawford and the Dodgers have
Jim in Hoboken : 7/21/2024 9:00 pm : link
hit 5 so far. The Yanks made him look like Cy Young.

Peraza finally had a good game. Bench Torres, platoon Peraza and Vivas. Cabrera should play 3B. Inject some youth, speed, and give a damn to the team, I don’t care if they hit a combined .150.

Torres embodies everything wrong with this team. He not only made an error and hit into a DP at a crucial time, he also swung on the first pitch and popped out meekly when Baz was wild early. He’s 27, forget about the juiced ball era Gleyber.

Once Dominguez can replace Verdugo, this team will be watchable again.

since I went to the game at YS today (which is rare for me these days), I'll add my $.02.

First, the good.

OK, this is personal to me, but it was kind of a family reunion at the Stadium today - there were 21 of us, three generations. The small fry had never really seen a baseball game before, and the Stadium is a beautiful field and a cathedral for baseball. I kind of pushed back against the Yanks demolishing the original Stadium but on a day like today I can see why that was a valid idea.

Also personal to me, but I live in the Hudson Valley and as YS now has a Metro North station, I drove to the Croton Harmon station in Croton-on-Hudson and took the train. What a trip - literally and figuratively. Both trains (up and down) were standing room only with Yankee fans of all ages - a lot of young ones, a good sign. Judge must have sold more jerseys than anyone else in history. And it was definitely guys and gals ... and some of the gals in their Yankee gear ... let's just say it's the middle of summer, they're tan and they get creative with how to wear their Yankee gear.

As for the game itself, more on that in the "bad" section below. But as to the good. Certainly the Judge HR was the highlight. I've been a fan since the late '50s, I saw the Mick and also saw many blasts by Reggie Jackson. But I'm not sure I've ever, in person, seen a Yank hit a ball further than Judge did today. He also hit a foul "HR" in the 9th ... it looks like he's hitting the ball off of a tee.

As to other Yanks - we can win with Volpe at shortstop. He's a slick fielder and a great baserunner. He doesn't have to hit home runs. Singles, doubles and walks will be fine. Also Rice - he obviously shouldn't be a lead off hitter but he's got a good eye; and as to his fielding, I was sitting behind 1B and I think he's getting it down. Soto is Soto - I'll cover him in the "bad" section below. Also, while Stroman wasn't great, this was a winnable game and he's at least a battler.

As to the "bad" - you guys have covered it. The RISP-fails in innings 1 and 2 were pathetic. Soto swung at a 3-0 pitch with the bases loaded and the pitcher afraid to throw him strikes, with Judge on deck. Inexcusable. He also didn't leg out his double in the 9th because he thought it was out - and he could have had a triple. Didn't end up mattering, but it could have. As for Gleyber - cut his ass so far as I'm concerned. His hitting is gone and his fielding is wildly inconsistent.

As to others - Wells ain't anything special, he should be a backup for someone better. Verdugo, I don't hate, but he's not anything special either. Cabrera should be given more run, he at least looks alive out there. Grisham and the bullpen are all just JAGs so far as I'm concerned. Bring up some youngsters.

The game did go down to the final batter so it ended up being entertaining, but of course it sucks to lose. That said, especially with the whole Metro-North experience I was impressed by the commitment of Yankee fans.
With Judge and Soto
NJLCO : 7/21/2024 10:46 pm : link
You still can’t win, what’s that say about the other 7? Please stop talking about runs scored or HR’s….stop. Look at the past 2 months, we are just barely better than the White Sox’s. Tired of listening to Kay and O’Neil telling me how great the other pitcher’s are game after game. It gets old fast. Stanton has to build up his stamina as a DH, cut me a fucking break. This is in part on Boone and Cashman as much as this shitty line up.
Zero faith in Torres to get a clutch hit
bceagle05 : 7/22/2024 12:08 am : link
or even make a routine play at 2B. What a mess he and the Yankees have made of his career - there was a .300/20HR hitter in there somewhere but he’s long gone. I just roll my eyes when his turn in the order comes around.
