Making the playoffs
George : 7/22/2024 10:44 am : link
Doesn’t matter how or what the seed is.

We’re only 18 months removed from that, by the way.
Right now, I can't say confidently that we have the right men in place
UberAlias : 7/22/2024 10:45 am : link
At GM or HC. So another way to rephrase the question to me is, what will it take to get there? As far as Jones goes, I've seen enough and don't believe he's the answer. What I do need to see is further evidence that's he's a guy you can win with, ala 2022. I can excuse some of last year due small sample size and what a disaster on Oline and other areas. But if Jones remains a skittish chicken shit opposed to competent transitional QB to true franchise guy, he won't finish the year and will score heavily against others (JS/BD).
For the team, getting into the post season

8-9
JoeyBigBlue : 7/22/2024 10:48 am : link
9-8 season where we are competitive in most games. Winning 2/4 against Cowboys and Eagles. Having a good enough season where we are on the right track but not good enough to bring Jones back. I don’t want to waste another season on him.
Either making the playoffs and not beating Philly/Dallas
Beezer : 7/22/2024 10:53 am : link
in the regular season, or narrowly missing the playoffs BUT a win against Dallas and a win against Philly. Pretty sure I could feel decent about either of those scenarios.

Just no more 4-13, 5-12, 6-11 seasons. Let's ramp this up, please. Been stuck in that mud bog for too long. That playoff win was a huge tease.

A functional offense. That’s it.
Metnut : 7/22/2024 11:17 am : link
If the team goes 7-10, and the giants lose a bunch of close games and the secondary gets torched but the offense is explosive I’d be okay with it. Would be give confidence that we have an offensive guru for a head coach which is a huge starting point. Can make the QB decision afterward.
For the right tackle position to not
barens : 7/22/2024 11:37 am : link
be a liability, which would allow the offense to open up more. JMS to take a step forward in his progression which isn't guaranteed.

Most importantly, hoping for a healthy season from Andrew Thomas and Dexter Lawrence, and to a slightly lesser degree, Banks.

I think hitting on a few draft picks would go a long way, something that has eluded this team for too long.

Overall competitiveness and progress
BillT : 7/22/2024 11:44 am : link
That would include a decent record near .500. It would include young players showing they belong. If they lost a couple of heartbreakers but were playing decent ball I’d be ok. Show me they have a future.
eliminating the question marks around quarterback
Steve in Greenwich : 7/22/2024 11:45 am : link
which in a nutshell is two things
1) Improved O-line
2) Improved WR play

I will be happy if all the excuse making gets taken away; if Jones happens to thrive and against all odds takes off as a 27 year old - that would be great, but I just cant deal with another off season of "he needs to be upright to judge him" or "no one gets open" or "its the worst supporting cast in the league". I would think with the above we should see an uptick in wins, whether it puts us in the playoffs or not is another question, but I just want to get out of this purgatory we have been in for the last 5 years of trying to figure out what we have at QB.

I'm on board with Bill's assessment. I would add improvement in the coaching as well. Daboll has some things to prove.

This is actually a hard question for me to answer
Dnew15 : 7/22/2024 12:40 pm : link
I want hope..

I know what I definitely don't want..

.500 IMO - this is the worst case scenario. IF they beat bad teams by a field goal during the course of the season, DJ plays between last year and 2022 and they don't take the out in his contract, the offense is lethargic and not overly productive, but the rest of the team marginally improves...I'm out.

I hope that the OL comes into it's own, the Daboll offensive scheme can be run to it's fullest, DJ has a career year and dispels all the naysayers and previous futility and lights it up to the point where the offense performs at a top 10 level and the defense is respectable....I'm in. Even if they miss the playoffs, don't win a bunch of games, b/c shit happens - I'm ok with it.

I'm also good if the team bottoms out...DJ is clearly the reason they suck and the Giants move on, key guys get hurt but show potential before they do, they get zero bounces and suffer a bunch of close losses. Maybe Daboll survives, maybe he doesn't depending on how things play out. The Giants finish as the worst team in the league and select a QB to officially start over...I'm in

TyreeHelmet : 7/22/2024 12:48 pm : link
-Putting up touchdowns and scoring at a high rate to compete in games.
- having the top picks of the last few years truly flash and perform. Prove they are building blocks.
- make the playoffs or compete until the very last game- 9/10 wins.

Not achieving those 3 should call for a true evaluation of new leadership.

Progress
bigblue5611 : 7/22/2024 1:14 pm : link
An offense that can be explosive and have big/chunk plays, some resulting in long TD's. A defense that can stop the run, not get gashed on 3rd down all the time and can make a stop. A .500ish record (preferably above) that can show they're competing. Also, staying healthy.
A competent offense
JCassmen : 7/22/2024 1:44 pm : link
That can score early and play with a lead, would take the pressure off the defense and the offense. Defense that can stop run and get off the field...that would equal at least 9-10 wins.

to see more of the playbook from Daboll and not some limited version of it. You can tell he's a good OC based on the limited interactions with QBs on Hard Knocks. I can only imagine what the offense can be with good QB play. Would love to see them in the top 12-15 range and defensively in the top 10. If they can accomplish that, they should be able to win 9-11 games in be in the playoff hunt till Christmas. If not, the season is over at the bye week

When the season is over, I want to feel like the team is headed in the right direction, much like 2022 would be fine. I expect a little more than 2022 for 2024. I want another playoff win and more competitive division play. IDGAF about any players stats. Means nothing to my happiness or satisfaction with the team.
Most Important

Is making the final and correct decision on the Giants QB situation for 2025.

Need to clearly know Jones is the guy for the future or time to move on. Another “incomplete” grade is not good enough.

A winning record as well.

A top 1/3 defense.

as a fan, a football fan, not a Giants fan.

As for the Giants, being competitive, possibly winning, and not being blown out, by the best teams on their schedule.

What teams would that be? Baltimore, on 12/15, is the only one that I might ink in, at this time.

Cincinnati? Maybe

Philly? Maybe, if they've replaced the weak links in their chain.

Dallas? Too soon to tell. They might take a huge plunge this year, if their offensive line doesn't come together.

At this time, no other team on the schedule looks like serious deep run playoff material.

clear development from the 2022 and 2023 draft classes and not being a punching bag for the better teams in the NFL including Dallas and Philly. Vying for a wild card spot in December would be a bonus. Just want to feel like the roster is moving in the right direction talent-wise. Even if Schoen/Daboll they can at least make it easier on the next regime by giving them something to work with.

That should say "Even if Schoen/Daboll aren't the answer..." Oh, and also add-in clear improvement in o-line play, nothing is going to change until that happens.
Answering the biggest question of all
anon837 : 7/22/2024 4:23 pm : link
Will ownership part with Jones if he doesn't show and prove? They can't fall victim to the "If not him, then who...." conundrum. If he's not the guy, you have to move on. They have a nice defense, pretty promising weapons, and hopefully, a glimmer of hope on the OL. He's got to show he can carry this team when needed.
A superbowl victory!

How about being entertained each week by a Giants team that is still in it before my first bites of Turkey and stuffing? Maybe even to the last week or two of the season? LFGG. Too much of this org’s absolute shite has made me upset and disgusted.
Speaking of playoffs
gogiants : 7/22/2024 6:16 pm : link
The giants have had only 3 playoff games over the last 10 seasons. There are only 3 teams with 2 which includes Washington and one team with 0 - the jets.
Starting the season without a hole to dig out from
KraZee : 7/22/2024 6:27 pm : link
would be a nice place to start. Sick of looking up at week 4 or 5 with a fan decision to make...is it better to tank the rest of the way or fight to become average. Give me a passable 2-2 and hopefully 3-1 in the first 4 games for a damn change. 4 - 0 would be better but I am not a dreamer. Give us a season where the investments we have made prove out to be good ones. Think the investment in the second contract for Andrew Thomas or Sexy Dexy. Think the investment in Okereke at LB in Free Agency. Show me Burns stepping up and making the D line a terror with KT on the other side. We have gifted the league 2 of the best safeties in the previous two off-seasons. Show me that acumen at offensive guard and RT and Ctr. Nabers, Robinson and Hyatt becoming ridiculous threats teams have to game plan for. Give me an answer about Jones. Please either spit the bit or show you belong...I cant take another year of this uncertainty about what we have at QB. Like so many others I prefer to have the decision made. He sucks and not worth investing around him or he is good and this year proved it. I think this year one way or the other proves out the question once and for all. Playoffs would be nice..Proven progress and definition of what we actually have in the fold would be just as good. Go G men

A super bowl win
BH28 : 7/22/2024 8:26 pm : link
Anything less is a failure. Be nice to finally have some clarity on Daniel Jones future after this season.

Since a super bowl win is highly improbable, it's the QB situation ie the organization has a path forward with Jones or a new direction.
I want to beat at least 3 teams with winning records and good defenses
Orville Redenbacher : 7/22/2024 8:33 pm : link
and I want to not get embarassed by even the best teams. I want to see fight where we are going into the second halves of games with a chance consistently.

I also do not want to see any drama between our coaches.

Most of all if Jones cannot put up numbers that are above the league average i'd like him out. Or if he gets injured for more than 4 games.
Draftkings gives the NYG the worst odds in the East for the crown
The_Boss : 7/22/2024 10:42 pm : link
And just last week had an article saying the best shot for wins in the season’s first half rested in weeks 1 and 2. My sportsbook has the NYG with the 2nd longest NFC championship odds and 5th longest SB odds. The writing is on the wall.

without getting killed, and a running game that moves the chains. It's okay with me if the Giants don't score a ton of points or win ten games. Just demonstrate that you're a competent football team.
Development of young talent
carousel : 7/22/2024 11:43 pm : link
When a team is on the rise, during a successful season, often the team’s core players are having a good or career year. Usually when that happens, suddenly the depth players also have a better than expected year.

The Giants still have several key holes, but this year, several players should distinguish themselves as Dex and Thomas have done already. Not all of them will. It should help to guide future decisions toward building a winner.
Competitiveness vs the NFC East.
George from PA : 7/23/2024 4:24 am : link
Competitiveness vs the NFC

Improvement across the board especially in the areas of weakness.

The unproven players stepping up, talented players showing up.

The coaching staff making a difference in the positive.

Wins. Winning the games that are expected. Winning games against the teams that are viewed better.

Making the playoffs and being competitive in the playoff!
The Giants

end the great destruction of the LoS that has been going on for over a decade with poor front office decisions. Long time ago where you felt the Giants very competitively matched up on both fronts with consistency.

context matters. How they get to 8-9 wins matters.

Successful? I'd like to see this team emerge from 2024 with an identity, especially on defense but really both units to some extent.

The D is spending big money and resources on the front 7 and they have 2 high draft picks in the secondary along with a bunch of mid round picks. I can wait for the secondary to find its way on some level but the front 7 needs to carry the day and emerge as the best unit on this team. We need sacks. We need disruption. We need game saving, game swinging and game changing plays from the front 7. We need to come out of 24 knowing we have one of the better pass rushing/impactful front 7s in football.

We need to believe the WRs are game breaking and worthy of being the primary bread winners here. Mailk Nabers and Robinson really need to be the straws stirring the drink on offense. They were drafted high. Robinson has already flawed NFL ability. Nabers looks like a super star in waiting. Prove it here. THe OL needs to be capable.

If we come out of this season with an 8-9 record and beat some big boy teams along the way while forging a legit building block identity on D and offense, we should all take it and run. Some of you with the agenda, bullet point wins and losses nonsense just come off as someone laying the groundwork for future discord.

Build something with staying power.

Robinson has already flawed NFL ability
djm : 7/23/2024 1:38 pm : link
should be flashed NFL ability.

Not using an IPhone just my own fuck up.

I should add in Hyatt at WR as well but I am not convinced he's anything more than a Jag with speed. Big 2nd year for him.
Win more than you lose. Continue to figure out who are the core
ThomasG : 7/23/2024 1:47 pm : link
players that contribute the most to the winning and keep building the team around those players.

Anybody that is not contributing enough and is expensive, get rid of them and look for an upgrade or at least someone cheaper with same approximate ability.

Keep doing it until you are in the Super Bowl.
The same every year for me
Reale01 : 7/23/2024 3:00 pm : link
With respect to actual game results: I want them to be legitimately in the hunt (within a game) for making the playoffs heading into December is my floor.

Making the playoffs is a good year.

Winning the division is a great year.

At least one playoff win is outstanding.

I HATE it when the season is essentially over in October and that has happened a lot recently.
