NFT: Book Discussion - Fiction/Fantasy

UConn4523 : 7/22/2024 10:17 am
After reading the main 5 GoT books about a decade ago I haven’t been that engaged in a series until now. Currently reading The Blade Itself, book 1 of the First Law Trilogy and find it to be fantastic so far. So much so I bought both trilogy’s and plan to get the 3 standalones as well - anyone reading Abercrombie’s books?

After the first trilogy I’ll likely take a break and swap to something else, right now I have Mistborn on tap so I can finally get into Sanderson.

What are you guys reading in the fantasy genre these days?

One more recommendation - Children of Time

Adrian Tchaikovsky

And the follow up Children of Ruin

Great Sci Fi premise, well executed. I just saw that there's a third book Children of Memory and I will definitely read it.

Other than that, I'd stay away from Rothfuss. Name of the Wind is great, but he isn't going to finish that series. I think he doesn't know how to land that plane.

That's a good analogy and fits perfectly. I feel like he got the "Spruce Goose" into the air for an actual overseas flight but now he has no idea how to land it safely... lol

love Silo, Furgeson is awesome. She’s also the rumored lead role for Best Served Cold, the first film for Abercrombies universe. Hope that project becomes official.

Don't miss Chapterhouse! I know its different but I think its a fantastic book.

I mean it's bad when your editor/publisher is blowing you up online. Said she hasn't seen a word of book 3.
Rothfuss's publisher "I don't think he's written anything for six years." - ( New Window )

I give people Best Served Cold as a stand alone rec all the time. It's so good.

Tchaikovsky’s Shadows of the Apt series is excellent but hasn’t yet hit the popularity of some of the other series mentioned here.
Uconn have you read the Foundation Trilogy by Issac Isamov

Yes! These were excellent. Really unique mix of half the plot being humanity's sole hope is a large generational spaceship looking for a new home after Earth is ruined and other half is a evolutionary biology masterclass. Hard to really explain the book without giving too much away.

Third Children book is definitely really different than the other two, but I enjoyed it.

Have you read any other Tchiakovsky besides the Children series? I think I need to dig into more of his stuff.

Excellent pick. Highly recommend.

Also "Eaters of the Dead" by Michael Crichton.

I have not read anything else of his. I honestly didn't know he was this prolific until today when I looked up the series to see if it had continued. He's got a bunch of stuff out there.
I've read all the Foundation novels (including prequels and sequels)

and there is a reason they were given some sort of lifetime achievement award.

I loved Dune and will probably read Messiah before the next movie comes out.

I would strongly recommend you read both Messiah and Children. They start to get pretty freaky after that, but Messiah is very short and Children may be touched on in the next film.

The Red Rising series was recommended to me by many people, and I was skeptical. But they are a fun read. I read the first 4.

I very strongly recommend the Silo series that the Apple+ TV show is based on.

If you thought Red Rising series was fun through the first four books, keep going. Dark Age is the best in the series by far, Iron Gold was really just to reboot and set up all of the epic things that happen going forward. Can’t wait for the finale next year hopefully.

Interesting. It felt like it was slowing down to me so I abandoned the next book. I guess I'll pick it up again.

by Mary Doria Russell is one of my favorite books. The sequel Children of God is also good.
General question for Books
UConn4523 : 7/26/2024 5:53 pm : link
but I think it applies to movies as well. Who here tries to figure things out as they go vs letting the story unfold without too much analysis along the way?
