NGT: How do you think the Jets will do?

Eric from BBI : Admin : 7/23/2024 11:56 am
Never really give them much attention, but they will be one of the more interesting teams in 2024.
As usual...nowhere near as good as media wants them to be
SicilianGMEN : 7/23/2024 11:58 am : link
I say Rodgers gets hurt again by midseason and they get 8 wins tops
Obviously depends on Rodgers,
Section331 : 7/23/2024 12:00 pm : link
although I think they have a little more insurance with Tyrod. Can Rodgers stay healthy, and even if he does, how much will he have left in the tank after a full year off?

If he’s close to being his old self, they’ll be a tough out. I mean AFCE champs good. I don’t think they’re good enough to win the AFC, but anything can happen in the playoffs.
Depends on Rodgers health
Rick in Dallas : 7/23/2024 12:02 pm : link
If he stays injury free they are a play off contender .
.
Danny Kanell : 7/23/2024 12:03 pm : link
I hate the coach. I could see them starting off well (Something like 6-2) and their stupid fan base starts booking their flights to New Orleans.

Then either a Rodgers injury or just the inevitable Same old Jets come out and they fade down the stretch (And Saleh is garbage and can't right the ship) to a 9-8 type record and miss the playoffs.
yeah
pjcas18 : 7/23/2024 12:04 pm : link
like others have said - with a healthy Rodgers they're a contender.

Well, if it depends on Rodger’s

Health, then it depends on their retooled OL
Between contemplating retirement and injuries
UberAlias : 7/23/2024 12:07 pm : link
I don't think Rodgers is Rodgers anymore. They could be good, but my money is not on them living up to the hype, and that's even if Rodgers plays all season, which I would not bet on either.
2nd place in the AFC East to the Bills.
Optimus-NY : 7/23/2024 12:09 pm : link
The Fish and Jesters will fight for 2nd place. Jets will win a playoff game and then their warts will get them when they start to swim in the playoffs' deep waters against veteran teams and coaching staffs (e.g., the Chiefs and Ravens) in the Divisional round. Their WR corps is a lil sus, their OL is susceptible to injuries (love their 1st round pick btw--I think he'll be a stud in time), and their head coach. Saleh is JAG--the perfect tool for Rodgers to flex on.

They could make the play offs.
they seem to be ranked ~10th by SB odds
Osi Osi Osi OyOyOy : 7/23/2024 12:23 pm : link
Maybe a slight NYC boost there, but that still feels a little too good for me.

People forget that Rodgers' final season in GB was the worst of his career and a steep drop from his MVP form. Now he's going to be 41 coming off a serious season ending injury where he barely played 1 game.

Then you have to question exactly where his mind is at. I know it's a political thing so sorry if I'm not supposed to mention it, but the man was weighing getting thrown into the fire as a VP candidate. He ultimately chose football but at this stage of his career/life, you have to wonder how much he lives/breathes football.
Same as last season - which is what they do every season
PatersonPlank : 7/23/2024 12:24 pm : link
The press will pump them up though. Rodgers is like 100 yrs old and coming off a major injury. They have no backup again. Their coaching is questionable, and their talent is overrated. Frankly Rodgers wasn't looking to good his last season in GB, his game in London against us was poor. He may get banged up again (which is likely) and just quit this time.
I just don't see Rodgers
barens : 7/23/2024 12:24 pm : link
being that guy anymore, especially after an achilles. We all saw Tom Brady fall off a pretty steep cliff, I expect the same thing to happen to Rodgers.
All the piece are there
Tony in Tampa : 7/23/2024 12:33 pm : link
AR's health is the question. He doesn't need to be MVP good, just big moments good and mostly competent. Their D is impressive.

Them having say at a 6-2, 7-1 start and the Giants struggling with 2 or so wins will be intolerable. And I live in Tampa, can't imagine what the NYC Giants fans will have to put up with.
Jets will be good
djm : 7/23/2024 12:36 pm : link
but I can't get on board with Rodgers doing much for the entire season. He will flash but remind me how many NFL players aged 40+ come back from a serious injury that next season and play at a high level. Then add in that this same player hasn't had a good year for his standards since 2021. Rodgers wasn't any good in 22. Falls apart before the clock even started in 23. This guy aint saving shit. He may play every game. He won't dominate. Add in the Jets "lore" and you have a disaster waiting to happen, redux.

Think 2008 (Favre) Jets. Same shit different decade but I will give them 1 more win as I think this roster is better than the 08 team.
I am interested to see what Rodgers
larryflower37 : 7/23/2024 12:37 pm : link
Has left.
He doesn't seemed to be 100% locked in on Football, over 40, and coming off a major injury and the expectations are a Super Bowl contender this year and they haven't sniffed the playoffs in 14 years.

djm : 7/23/2024 12:41 pm : link
how the hell do you trade for an older pass rusher while letting a young pass rusher walk in FA and then watch the older pass rusher hold out. lol...the Jets. We don't laugh at them enough. And save me the BS about NYG sucking and we shouldn't laugh at other teams. Yes we should. Life is too short.
Knowing the Giants won't win a SB this year,
GeofromNJ : 7/23/2024 12:49 pm : link
I'd like to see the Jets win it. Why? Because I'm sick of Joe Namath being the face of the franchise.

Greg from LI : 7/23/2024 12:50 pm : link
Aaron Rodgers is 40 and coming off a ruptured Achilles. He's not going to be the savior.

Might squeak into the playoffs, but they're going nowhere, as usual.
The Jets
Semipro Lineman : 7/23/2024 1:09 pm : link
probably have an overall easier schedule than the Giants (on paper) and will open up with San Francisco followed by four games against Tennessee, New England, Denver, and Minnesota. That's not a murder's row.

The good news is that they end the season against Miami and Jacksonville on the road, LA Rams at home, Buffalo on the road, and finally Miami at home.

We all know that they will get crowned super bowl contenders early but that late stretch will show who they are
That defense is legit...
bLiTz 2k : 7/23/2024 1:17 pm : link
Hasaan Reddick replaces Huff, which is kind of a wash but Reddick is a better all around player.

Saleh is a clown, but a good defensive coach - that unit alone should win games.
If they stay healthy they will make playoffs
nygiants16 : 7/23/2024 1:23 pm : link
and lose in wildcard or divisional round and zjets fans will be all hyped saying they are winning the SB next year..

If they dont make the playoffs Douglas and Saleh will be fired and Rodgers will retire

They said the same thing last year about the defense and they gave big drive after big drive..

Reddick is also not reporting to camp
Hard to say with the uncertainty in Buffalo.
bceagle05 : 7/23/2024 1:27 pm : link
Sometimes those vet cap casualties are addition by subtraction (Diggs), but they lost a lot of guys. Definitely an opportunity for the Jets to win the AFC East, but I think they grab a wild card.
The Jets won
ManningLobsItBurressAlone : 7/23/2024 1:34 pm : link
7 games last year with Zack Wilson, Trevor Siemian, and Tim Boyle starting all but the game Rodgers was lost on.

They are going to be a good team, and I think they will win the AFCE, especially after all of Buffalo's departures. How far in the AFC will be paced by how good Rodgers is, but he is no doubt a huge improvement over the guys they trotted out last year. It's a top 5 D in football that was consistently behind the 8-ball with an offense that couldn't do anything.
They should win the AFC East, but
ZogZerg : 7/23/2024 2:21 pm : link
it's the Jets.

They will find a way to screw up what should be a good season.
If they stay healthy
Lines of Scrimmage : 7/23/2024 2:35 pm : link
I think they can be very good. On offense, they will need the OL to be good and then have a good enough of a running game to take some pressure of AR.

Smith is still a very good LT and his health will be a big part of the equation.
They definitely have a championship...

caliber D. That's a huge plus.

While I have always been fond of Rodgers and his skills, he hasn't played in a long time, and when he did in 2022, he wasn't very good.

So, that's a big question mark.

If he's solid and morphs more into a game manager plus-type, the Jets should be a 10+ win team.
I guess it really depends on if their

Woody Johnson should have zero influence over his business that he owns. Any meddling means they have no chance and he should sell the team.

At least that's what I've learned on BBI lately, a place where the conversations are often more productive than those we see on camera on Hard Knocks in Joe Schoen's office (according to some)!!

I heard recently on the radio that Pro Football Focus on their 2024 defensive unit rankings has the Jets defense ranked #1 in Defensive Line, LBs and Secondary. Crazy...
Health + the Reddick Situation are Key Factors
kash94 : 7/23/2024 3:22 pm : link
Rodgers: 41 and coming off of an Achilles injury
Tyron Smith: 33 years old
Mike Williams: Significant injury history
Reddick: Holding Out

--

But in theory, they are much improved and have the upside of being a contender whether we like them or not.

Not sure where this notion of them not having a great defense is coming from. You have to take into account that they were on the field a ton because of how poor the offense was.

2023 Defensive Rankings:
DVOA: 3rd in the league
Yards per Play: 1st in the league
Points per Play: 9th in the league

Defense is mostly the same as last year. Offense they are adding Rodgers, Williams, Smith, Fashanu to go along with Wilson and Breece Hall.

There's a lot of risk with some of these guys, but they'll be at least in contention for a playoff spot and maybe even a win or two in the playoffs.

I couldn't possibly give a shit less about PFF rankings.

If they're #1 in everything, why haven't they been the #1 defense?

They were 12th last year in points allowed. Granted they were third in yards allowed but a quick search of the leaders in points allowed shows that many of the best scoring defenses gave up a lot of yards per game. I have no idea why the Jets defense should be considered better than the Chiefs or Ravens who do a better job of keeping points off the board

Time of possession plays a factor. You'll naturally give up more points and yards if you're on the field more.

Jets' Time of Possession on offense was 25th in the league.
Baltimore was 9th
KC was 11th

If you adjust the numbers on a per play basis, Jets were 1st in yards and 9th in points.

They're not a perfect defense by any means, but I think it's fair to say that they're a top 7-10 group.

Their Points Against total is largely influenced by how inept they were offensively. It's hard to keep points off the board when the opponent is getting good field position all the time.

That said, I agree with Greg, there D is good, even very good, but not great.
As many have already stated...
Jim in Tampa : 7/23/2024 4:40 pm : link
It all depends upon Rodgers. Can he stay healthy and will he be effective at 41? The odds are stacked against him, big time!

Here's an all-time list of NFL QBs who have had both full (healthy) and productive seasons at age 41.

- Tom Brady
- Warren Moon

Brett Favre played his last season at 41, but missed 3 games and passed for far fewer yards and TDs, while his INTs increased. Favre's Vikings finished 6-10.

Drew Brees also played his last season at 41. He played well enough, leading the Saints to a 9-3 record in his starts. But Brees missed 4 games at 41 after having missed 5 games at 40.

Unitas, Jurgensen and Dawson made it to 40, but all played sparingly in their last 3 seasons (ages 38-40).

Many of the great QBs bowed out at 38, including Elway, Marino, Montana, Young, Warner, Sammy Baugh and Eli.

Peyton Manning, Rivers and Big Ben made it to 39.

Based on NFL history, I think it's highly, highly unlikely that Rodgers plays well AND stays healthy for the entire season.

If Rodgers stays healthy, which means their OT play well they will win the division. I see Buffalo having a hard time with them. The Dolphins still have proven nothing against good teams
