Toney being tried out at RB by the Chiefs

JoeyBigBlue : 7/23/2024 12:27 pm
Further proof that he’s always been a gadget player and not an every down WR. Just a brutal first round pick by the previous administration.

Well he probably won't line up offside as much

if he starts in the backfield and won't drop as many handoffs as he did passes.
I'm sure there are plenty of taleneted guys who threw away

their chance to have a very good and prosperous career, but Toney is the one I'm most aware of. I guess he may finally focus, but all evidence is that he will be broke in a couple of years (or maybe he's a savvy investor who hates football and has a great job lined up...?)
Every time I see Toney's name, I'm reminded that

DG passed on Micah Parsons because Parsons had character issues.

Serious question

that I do not have an answer to, but I have a mild opinion.

Who would you rather have right now on the roster?

Kadarius Toney still on his rookie deal $2.5M
Retired Darren Waller and his $7.5M in dead money between this and next season
They must be

I think his biggest flaw as a player is that he moves in a way that is very tough on the joints. So many sudden and explosive cuts that you just don't normally see on the football field. I don't think most people can play that Barry Sanders style without increasing their odds of injury by a significant amount. I think this affected Barkley to some degree as well.

So I don't think him going to the RB position where he'll be cutting even more is going to help.
Toney was also recruited to play QB in college.
MOOPS : 7/23/2024 1:05 pm : link
Reid would likely have a few trick plays inserted for Toney to throw if the whole concept of him at RB actually happens.

That original Toney trade is like a chain letter that keeps showing up and cursing them.

They were in a position to draft a top 5 defender, and instead got a few bootie years out of Toney, Waller, Neal, some dead money, Bellinger, and Hawkins.

JoeyBigBlue : 7/23/2024 1:24 pm : link
Toney is the worse first round pick the Giants have made in this century. They have had a ton of bad first round picks but Toney tops them all. He was an athlete and not a wide receiver that ran the full route tree, on top of having character concerns. He was a clearly a gadget player that should not have been touched anywhere near the top 50 picks.
This is not news
k2tampa : 7/23/2024 1:24 pm : link
He played a bunch of snaps from the backfield for the Chiefs the last two years. The Giants also had plays where he lined up in the backfield.
This is some of the danger
mittenedman : 7/23/2024 1:29 pm : link
of drafting these WRs from pop gun college offenses too. I remember a lot was made of Toney's lack of route running awareness and he never shored it up.

That isn't mistaken for being lightning quick either, which he is. There's still a lot more to it, and that's what he was struggling with here beyond the attitude issues.

And if he can't pick up Andy Reid's offense, where the routes are often described as backyard football stuff, he won't make it anywhere.
At least he won't be able to line up offsides

A gadget player with a horrific attitude and work ethic. "The Giants Way" gets criticized a lot, but they try to avoid morons like this for good reason.

The fact he passed through all of our character filters AND the football vetting is hard to understand.

Sadly, but true. Especially when you consider we passed on Parsons for "character concerns" in the same draft lol

He'll be running into Mahomes in that backfield, and I can't see them leaving him in on pass pro.
Mahomes told Reid that he doesn't trust Toney enough to throw
ThomasG : 7/23/2024 1:52 pm : link
the ball to him anymore. That's why he got benched and was inactive.

Maybe he agreed that he would be okay handing the ball off though.
The problem with this is,
Section331 : 7/23/2024 2:02 pm : link
will they trust him enough in pass pro? I don't see him being very effective there.

You know he's not putting in the flexibility and core strength work to support that kind of game, either.

The fact that there is anyone who could even suggest Gettleman was anything other that a curse on the New York Giants organization is stunning. It would be like the Texas School Book Depository saying “yeah but you should have seen the other guys we turned away.”

It was a black period in team history. No need to pretend it was anything different.

Lets just tread lightly here regarding the character issues. I would wager that Mara has a lot to do with making sure our top draft picks will represent the franchise like boy scouts.

There was some chatter about wanting Smith but the two comments made by the posters above were stupid.

The Giants desperately wanted a WR weapon for the offfense.
ThomasG : 7/24/2024 8:09 am : link
When they got jumped for their target, they moved down to a different place of value in round one as they still liked a few players on the board and could pick up some extra draft collateral.

However, by the time they picked again some guys had been selected so at that point they moved Toney up their list to be that weapon they wanted. Despite any risks they assessed or didn't assess properly, and he was the pick.

Nothing more.
The Plantonic ideal of "Million dollar talent, ten cent head."
TheOtherManning : 7/24/2024 10:53 am : link
His one big game as a Giant against the Cowboys perfectly encapsulates him as a player. He was torching DBs in the short/mid game, racking up YAC, talent popping off the screen...until he goes too hard after a whistle and gets himself ejected.

He has all the physical talent, but his motivation seems to be all or nothing. Either disengaged or geeking out with no workable middle ground.
LOL - this is a disaster in the making
PatersonPlank : 7/24/2024 11:15 am : link
Toney strikes me as a guy who doesn't like getting hit or delivering a hit. Playing with contact on every play is pretty much a pre-requisite of the running back position. He can't just run around on most plays without ever getting touched

This is Rico‘s actual post, despite the nonsense that you constantly post on threads about the Toney pick.

Last year's draft
Rico : 4/23/2022 11:23 am : link
The trade with the Bears seemed to catch us by surprise. We took the deal because our WR's were all gone and it was too good to pass up. But I don't think we had planned for that scenario.

We hoped AVT might drop to us, but once he was taken we weren't sure who to take. Getty was flying by the seat of his pants late in the first round, and that was a setup for a bad decision.

So who’s stupid now? Nothing there about Gettleman wanting Darisaw (he wanted AVT) or about getting overruled by Judge.

And just because Judge liked Toney doesn’t mean Gettleman didn’t like him also. And Gettleman was the GM last I checked.

The answer to your question is you doubled down on stupid.

JonC from my perspective has presented some information in the past and seems to have earned credibility with posters as being accurate with some of that material.

Not sure any insider has a 100% hit rate and I have not commented much on Toney.
