Daboll's Lying Down On Couch

Essex : 7/24/2024 9:51 am
while interviewing Nabors. Did anyone else have an issue with this. I know some will dismiss as completely irrelevant, but I thought that was a bad look that I found somewhat unprofessional. If you are a leader and you want your team to be professional when they are in the meeting, by sitting up and paying attention, you might not want to look like you are not lounging in a frat house or on a beach in the Caribbean. The only thing I can think of was that it was intentional to make Nabors more comfortable like he was just shooting the crap with his friends to open up as opposed to being in a formal interview where he might be more on guard. But, still, it was noticeable to me what Daboll did and that I would never do that in a meeting.

I think Daboll on Hard Knocks
David B. : 7/24/2024 11:59 am : link
Has thus far, come off as kind of an uncouth slob. I don't think he actually IS one, but no one, including Schoen or Mara seems concerned about the NYG HC presenting anything like a professional appearance or demeanor. Even with the cameras on.

So yeah, I don't think sprawled out on the GM's couch was a good look for Daboll. But as other have said, I, too, am old, and out of touch. I don't expect Hank Stram, Tom Landry attire and demeanor. That's not today's head coach. I also don't mind f-bombs and coarse language in general, but when you're the HC of the Giants, I don't think you should be presenting yourself to non-Giants (like college prospects or FAs) in such a cavalier manner -- stretched out on a couch, looking like a slob (I'm not talking about his clothes). None of that stuff is professional. Of course, neither is cursing out your assistants (to the point of complaints) on the headphones during games.

Most of us wouldn't get away with that shit at our jobs. However, Schoen and Mara seem totally unconcerned, so what do I know?

By all accounts
k2tampa : 7/24/2024 12:13 pm : link
Daboll's player pretty much all love him - and the way he acts around them and treats them is the biggest reason why. I have no problem with this.

psychological techniques in interviewing his witnesses, and he comes across to me as very prepared, even though his outward appearance may be somewhat casual or disarming.
I think Daboll now's what he's doing. If one of these guys

the guy kicked around the NFL for 23 years before getting a HC opportunity with of course, the guys who have struggled to come up with a viable HC.

If he wins, no one care; if he continues to lose (8-16-1 after the 7-2 start in 2022), these sorts of quirks will be part of the indictment.

And what would that reason be that he kicked around the NFL for 23 years?

Yup. Same as 90% of threads on here lol.

I personally find it funny when I start reading a thread like this while not having seen what's being talked about and I get a picture in my mind, and then I see a clip of it and it's actually totally different.

"Lying down on couch"??? Anyone who thinks that's lying down on a couch has never lain down on a couch before.

I think that's just normal for a coach in the NFL. Most coaches coach for a long time before they get a HC job.

Bill Belichick got "kicked" around the NFL for 16 years before an NFL HC job.

Andy Reid got "kicked" around college football & the NFL for 18 years before an NFL HC job.

Tom Coughlin got "kicked" around college football and the NFL for 27 years before an NFL HC job.

The things people worry about. I'm trying to figure out if these weirdos live a great life and you have nothing else to worry about so you worry about how the New York Giants HC sat on his couch while interviewing a potential draft pick or do they live a terrible life worrying about things that don't really matter.

Agreed, and I think the Schoen backwards hat stuff is a bit lame too. These guys all seem a little too comfortable right now. For a franchise that hasn't put a professional quality product on the field for much of the last 10 years, it's not a good look. Some immmaturity there to say the least.

The players are coming in for interviews in sweats and tee shirts. It is more casual than I expected, in a way.

The F Bombs to me are a bit different and more "unsettling."
I was a sailor my entire life and passing the fuckin salt is acceptable to me. So using the F bomb doesn't usually raise an eyebrow - but it is weird to hear it used by the GM and VP.

I was raised different as well. I’m 48yrs old.
DeVito32 : 7/24/2024 4:25 pm : link
I wouldn’t do that in most cases. But I look at it 2 ways. 1) In casual settings, especially in the new generation you might want a more comfortable/chill atmosphere to have some rookies loosen up a little. 2) But I think in more professional settings, where the meetings are more important/professional, I wouldn’t be doing that.

Also, during peek times in the year… especially during the combine/draft… these guys are in the building sometimes 18-20hrs. So we’re only seeing certain parts of the day. I highly doubt it’s like that all the time.

Mike from SI : 7/24/2024 5:28 pm : link
these days. I'm in my (late) 30's and most folks who are young Gen X and younger tend to be less formal than our more "wise" (friendly euphemism for "older") colleagues.

As an example of the trend of less formality, you sometimes see important world leaders without ties.

I think this is just the way things are trending. If you look at people outside in the early 1900s, everyone was wearing formal hats and gloves, both of which are basically gone now.

Same. If Nabers can’t hold a conversation because the coach is siting upright, then why interview him at all? To me it came across poorly, but maybe this is how things are in professional sports?

Do you think this is an instance of people making an observation and expressing an opinion, or do you believe many posters are spending time and energy obsessing about this, and every comment shows a devotion of significant amounts of mental effort?

Serious question.

Not that it matters, but I was more like 'That's a little rude' when Joe was telling John, Steve, & Dabs about how he saw the draft unfolding & Mara didn't look back when talking back to Joe. Dabs did when he addressed Joe about what Saban said about Naders.

So what I take away from this view is “everyone with an opinion is an unhinged lunatic with lots of free time?”
Yeah, not sure how you jump to that conclusion

Someone saw something on a show that they considered inappropriate and decided to author a post that bothered them about something someone else did on what is essentially a reality TV show.

This team has some problems and laying on the couch while likely putting in 16 hour days is not one of them.

There is nobody on earth (player, coach or GM) who is good enough for this fan base.

I can only imagine some of the responses.

I like Brian Daboll. I'm rooting for him. I think if I was a player I'd want to play for him. The last thing I want is for the Giants to changes the head coach again.

I think from what they've shown us on NYG HK lying down on the couch in that posture conducting a job interview is in character for "head coach" Daboll. It's obvious to me watching NYG HK or any previous year of Hard Knocks that the NFL has its own work and social culture.

The players that are being drafted this high have been part of it since middle school or high school at the latest. They've been pampered in every way and "recruited" since their early teens. Now they're on "job" interviews for the big money very few get. It looks like to me that there is a very different relationship coach/player vs GM/player. The coach from Rex Ryan to Mike McDaniel or Brian Daboll are a part of the player culture. The GM is not.

Most of what I've seen on NYG Hard Knocks has fallen under be careful what you wish for you just might get it for me. I find this "off season" version of Hard Knocks to be particularly jarring and revealing. The cameras have peeled back more of the socioeconomic owner/front office/coach/player dynamic than I want to think about while yell at the TV on Thursdays/Sundays or Mondays.

I understand that everyone in the Giants building knows the cameras are on at all times and behaving accordingly (if not performing for the cameras) but this behind the scenes look at how the Giants ownership and front office do business has confirmed to me that they're a dysfunctional organization that is setup for failure.

IMO and experience no company, in any business, that has open market competition (which NFL teams do not) would survive structured like the NY Football Giants. Individual NFL teams don't need to provide a great product for great profits. The bad teams get just as rich. It's the only US business I know of including the other sports leagues where results don't impact profits. No wonder the Mara mantra is meaningful games in December is a successful season. Their only business risk is the embarrassment of the performance of their team.

As has been said
gersh : 7/25/2024 1:09 pm : link
