Just hope he uses his bench more over the course of the regular season and they limit minutes on certain guys.
Well Deserved
kash94 : 7/24/2024 1:42 pm : link
People will bring up his management style, but no Knick has averaged over 35 mpg since he took over as coach.

Only four players total have averaged over 30 mpg in the regular season since he took over:
1) Julius Randle
2) Jaylen Brunson
3) RJ Barrett
4) Reggie Bullock

The minute issue in this year's playoffs was a function of injuries.

Sorry hit send too soon.

Hart and OG also averaged above 30 minutes per game, but they were only at 33 MPG in the regular season which is more than fine.

Once again - injuries forced Thibs' hand. He's changed a lot as a coach since his Bulls / Timberwolves days.
The people
Jon In NYC : 7/24/2024 1:45 pm : link
who blame Thibs for the fluke injuries at this point should just be ignored. Not worth giving that storyline any oxygen.

Thibs absolutely deserves this. One of four teams last year with both top 10 offensive and defensive efficiency and he was playing without a frontcourt for the last half of the season.
I am not a huge Thibs fan.
robbieballs2003 : 7/24/2024 1:52 pm : link
There are things that drive me crazy like how wr can neer inbound a fuckin ball. With that said, there was no other option. Last year might have been his best coaching job. Maybe it was out of necessity but he was more flexible. Brunson LOVES him so there was no way we were moving on. Thus team can 100% win it all but Thibs has to find a way. As far as the injuries go, the only ones I can say that were from overuse was maybe OG and Hart. Since he took over, the Knicks have had one of the healthiest teams. People have to stop with this load management shit.
Thibs isn't
Enzo : 7/24/2024 2:20 pm : link
perfect but he's a damn good coach. The front office, coach, and star player are all in alignment. "The vibes are immaculate".

Agreed!
I think during that 2nd year
nygiants16 : 7/24/2024 2:24 pm : link
he was real close to being fired, i think we were all sick of him and then the 3rd year he went to the younger players and shortened the rotation and he hasnt looked back..

There are still some things you shake your head at but for the most part hr has found his groove with this team..

I think the big question this year, with a deep roster and a team ehose goal is championship will he have games where he lets guys rest and really pace the team through the middle of the season
the second year
Enzo : 7/24/2024 2:33 pm : link
was a front office failure as well. I'm sure Thibs had input but they really went nuts keeping together a team that won exactly ONE playoff game (Noel, Rose, Burks, etc.). I do blame Thibs for enabling the season long Randle meltdown, especially when we had Obi languishing on the bench. But whatever, that's all in the past now.

Yup front office overcompensated after making the playoffs and needing offense signing Fournier and Kemba

Randle led the NBA in minutes per game at 37.6 his first year under Thibs, and was over 35 the following three years.

Josh Hart averaged 40.0 MPG the last 35 games of the regular season, after Randle's injury, and even more in the playoffs.

You can say this was "forced" by injuries, but another coach would have handled the situation differently.

DDV played 52:30 of a possible 53:00 in the last game of the regular season, with Bojan, McBride and Burks all available off the bench. And it wasn't even clear it would be beneficial for the Knicks to win that game.

Would any coach other than Thibs have done that? I doubt it. He hasn't changed, for better or worse.
Thibs is the man
DCOrange : 7/24/2024 3:31 pm : link
Stars are leaving tens of millions on the table to help the Knicks, guys want to play for Thibs and the Knicks, the team is on the rise and the Knicks are the best they have been in decades - and Thibs made IHart a $25M a year player.

But Thibs sucks says the usual BBI keyboard warriors still bitter at getting cut in 6th grade CYO basketball.

Josh Hart was averaging less than 25 per game before the injuries, it wasnt just Randle's injury, it was also OG's, Hart was basically starting at the 3 and the backup 4. So yes injuries played a part..

Donte didnt even make the league minimum for games played because his minutes were low before the injuries..

Convenient to cherry pick 1 game for Donte and dont mention that Thibs played 9 guys and that Burks was unplayable at that point..

and dont mention playoff minutes everyone plays their starters big minutes in the playoffs even the Celtics who are deep and blowing out teams in the playoffs played their top 5 over 35 minutes

Mark Bryant is joining the Knicks as an assistant coach on Tom Thibodeau’s staff, per SNY sources. Bryant, most recently with Pistons, is widely viewed as one of the top big man coaches in the NBA.

Nice addition. The addition of Casey Smith as their new V.P. of Sports Medicine from the Mavs (their's and Team USA's former athletic trainer) has me really excited.

The Knicks used their bench plenty last season. Does anyone remember that the Knicks were literally considered the deepest team in the NBA throughout the entire season? I wonder why.

Also, you kinda need players in order to play those players. By March we were a fucking mash unit. So…. Yea.

Hart was averaging 28.2 MPG before the game Randle and OG were hurt. But, really, that's not the point. It's what happened after.

Thibs played nine guys in the regular season game DDV played 52:30, but he could have played the bench guys more minutes and substituted one of them for DDV.

As for playoff minutes for starters escalating generally, perhaps, but it's a matter of degree.

Thibs does things other coaches don't do, and he hasn't really changed in that regard. Whether that works positively for the Knicks will be seen.

You are completely ignoring circumstance, if the Knicks are healthy nkbody is playing big minutes, but we get it you are the contrarian..

and saying thibs does things that other coaches dont do is simpky not true, Nick Nurse played Maxxey 44.5 MPG against the Knicks, Embiid played 40 on one leg..

This idea that Thibs is the only coach that plays his starters big minutes is simply not true..

Also DDV and Hart minutes only escalated because of injuries..

Dude's a legit great NBA coach. Yeah, he has his weaknesses, but he won a ton in Chicago & even had some good moments in Minnesota, an organization that hasn't exactly been a model of success since their birth in the late '80s.

The issue isn't the regular season. He needs to prove it in the playoffs. Regardless of situation, he has not had success in the playoffs. With this group, he has to get it done.
Some speculation
nygiants16 : 7/24/2024 8:20 pm : link
the Jazz are about to make a trade becaus eof opening up 2 roster spots..they still have 30 million in cap space as well they have to spend
That would be great of we could land Walker Kessler.
robbieballs2003 : 7/24/2024 8:32 pm : link
Not only would that give Thibs another defensive C this year to pair with Mitch, but we are also talking about a potential long term piece.

As many have pointed out here, the minutes and injuries are non-factors here. The playoff minutes were the result of multiple devastating injuries. The injuries had nothing to do with workload.

Another overblown thing is the false narrative that players hate playing for him. This team seems to love him and play like they would run through a wall for him. They, as a team, certainly seem to have bought into his program.
