NFT: RIP John Mayall

Dr. D : 7/24/2024 5:20 pm
John Mayall didn't have a lot of commercial success. His biggest hit was "Room To Move", but he was very influential. Members of his Bluesbreakers (before they went onto bigger fame) included Eric Clapton, Peter Green, Mick Taylor, Jack Bruce, John McVie and Mick Fleetwood.

I saw him many moons ago at the River Blues Festival in Philthy.

He was 90! RIP John

He was still performing on occasion at age 90. Just think of the great musicians who had their start with him.
R.I.P. John Mayall!

suggested to the Stones that Mick Taylor be Brian Jones' replacement.

Clapton & Bruce left to form Cream and Green, Fleetwood & McVie left to form Fleetwood Mac.

Such a huge influence to music. I still remember spinning my dad's records with Eric Clapton with him... 90's a pretty good run... RIP Mr. Mayall!
I've owned the beano album since ~1968

When I was a kid exploring music Mayall was one of the people who steered me to blues. I'd say his passing makes me feel old but most aspects oF my life do that now.

+1 , The Turning Point features an unusual quartet: bass player, nylon-string acoustic guitarist, a top-tier jazz player on winds, and Mayall - with no drummer. It has a cool atmospheric vibe but it also rocks when the kick it into Room to Move, especially the chicka-chicka break.

I picked up mono a copy of that as a teenager in the 1980s and cut my teeth on Hideaway before I even knew who Freddy King was. As it turns out I don't have much interest in Eric Clapton--certainly nothing he's done in the past 57 years or so--but I owe it to that record for introducing me to more of the "genuine article" earlier than I would have otherwise found my way to it.

I sad day. Time marches on.
One of the best shows I've seen was a JM

anniversary show at the Capitol in Passaic, early '80s.
Mayall and his band with special guests Mick Taylor, BB King, Albert King, & Buddy Guy. Special night.

The Blues Breakers were a proving ground for the first two generations of rock n’ rollers.

In a world with so many selfish egotistical assholes

like Roger Waters and John Fogarty, who screwed their bandmates (in Fogarty's case, his own brother), it's hard to imagine what Mayall did with Mick Taylor.

He has this great young guitarist and he contacts another band, the Rolling Stones, and suggests they take him.

giving Mayall a tribute. Seemed very sincere and thanked JM for finding him and giving him a career "when I was 18 or 19".

Just remembered Albert Collins, too. Sad that only a handful of those original blues masters are still around.

My Wife showed me Clapton's tribute video yesterday. She asked me, "Who was the John Mayall guy?"

I gave her John's run-down, complete with all the bandmates he gave a boost to.
Very moving tribute by EC. - ( New Window )

mentored so many musicians.
Turning point was so different....Room to move got all the attention but the rest of the record was better.

Saw him twice in 73-74 at the Capitol in Passaic and a few weeks later at the old Academy of Music in NYC.
The tour supported his " Jazz Blues Fusion" album.
Highly recommend it.

Underrated performer.

RIP
