Gleyber
Costy16 : 7/30/2024 2:40 pm : link
Wonder how hard they are trying to move him. That ship probably sailed two years ago. I can't see many teams being interested in a guy with the amount of errors he makes.

I will say, pretty interesting that Jazz comes in and plays 3B for the first time in his career and says they can put me wherever they need me so I can help win a championship. Meanwhile Torres, who has been here for his whole career and has the most errors of any 2B in baseball since 2018, says he isn't moving positions.
I hate to say this
Mike from SI : 7/30/2024 2:53 pm : link
because it gets thrown around a ton with athletes and we don't actually know them.

Gleyber seems mentally weak. The year he played SS--which he is capable of doing at a mediocre level--he let it affect his hitting. His contract walk year? He has a bad year hitting. All the dumb errors on plays he's physically capable of making. He refuses to focus his approach on hitting the ball the other way even though it's obviously better for him. I could go on, and I'm sure you guys could provide more examples.

You'd think Yankees fans would be used to cheering on the incumbent who refuses to change positions when a superior player at his position arrives via trade.

There's a difference between attitude and general mental issues. I mean if we're not calling Chuck Knoblauch and Steve Saks throwing yips attitude issues then I don't think Torres deserves that tag either.

BH28 : 7/30/2024 7:19 pm : link
people here would be complaining about overpyaing for marginal talent. This wasn't a very compelling trade deadline for buyers. Ultimately he had to make the choice between an overpay or stand pat. While it would have been nice to get a bullpen arm, I am not complaining about standing pat.

Looking at the AL, what team isn't signifcantly flawed? The yanks as presently constructed should be one of the favorites to make it out of the AL.

$60 million more than the team with the third highest and only $9 million below Cohen for the top spot.

Since the end of last year they added Soto and Verdugo + Stroman after making a huge offer to Yamamoto. They added Chisholm and two relievers at the deadline. I don’t love everything they do but they’re always adding players.

Don't think that's it. He's drafted so poorly and then trade away most of the decent prospect they had. He wasn't getting anyone unless Dominguez (0-for-2 with a walk tonight) or Jones was included.

the Sunday Night Baseball guys mentioned the point that how many big crowds did he get to play in front of playing in Miami? They don't draw flies at home and its not like they draw on the road. And always felt like he had untapped potential. Never dreamed he'd have this kind of debut, though.

Something interesting perusing the standings - the Yankees have had a tougher schedule than other likely playoff teams. Record vs teams over .500:

Yanks 44-33 (77 games)
Orioles 38-27 (65 games)
Cleveland 28-20 (48 games)
Twins 24-34 (58 games)
Royals 27-31 (58 games)
Phillies 30-24 (54 games)
Brewers 32-28 (60 games)
Dodgers 30-25 (55 games)
Padres 31-31 (62 games)
Greg I heard some talking head mention that the Yankees
arniefez : 7/31/2024 10:12 am : link
have a favorable schedule coming up. It won't matter if they play the way they did for the lost 6 weeks though. Hopefully that stretch won't be revisited.

21 out of 29 for a closer isn't going to inspire much confidence as the games get more vital. Who is going to close if Holmes keeps this up?

Whoever said Jazz/Mickey Rivers I agree. I mentioned to a friend of mine that if Mickey Rivers was on the 2024 Yankees he'd be Jazz. Rickey Henderson was built much differently, I don't see that one.

Yeah I read somewhere where we have I think the 5th easiest schedule from here on out? Listen obviously the past 7 weeks or so before the winning streak were horrific. To be fair though the schedule in that stretch was brutal. Atlanta, Dodgers, red hot Mets 4 times, Orioles & hot Red Sox non stop, now the Phillies on the road. It's been a brutally tough stretch. That having been said they did get swept at home by the Reds. Like I said no excuses, but the Schedule definitely lightens up starting this weekend and we're done with the Dodgers, Braves, Astros and Mets, Brewers and Padres and only have home series left vs. Baltimore & Boston.

It was a different game when Mickey Rivers played in the 1970s. I think if he was playing in 2024 he'd hit a lot more HRs and I think if Jazz played in 1978 he'd hit a lot less. I see similar types of build, similar types of energy/personality. Just my opinion.

But they also didn't get many easy games either.

I feel better about the lineup going forward. I think Chisholm will continue to play well for them. The Martian should be up soon. Wells has been a revelation, notwithstanding a lousy night last night. I think Volpe and Verdugo hit better going forward. And Judge, historically, has hot finishes to the season.

Pitching.....the rotation to me is all about Cole regaining his form, which he should. Holmes has his issues but jeez, the hits last night were absurd. A pair of swinging bunts and a dribbler with eyes. The point about starters moving to the pen is a good one - that will help. Cross your fingers that guys like Efross get healthy and can be a late surprise
like Damaso Marte was in 2009.

They aren't as good as they looked the first two months and they're not as bad as they looked during that hideous losing streak. Luckily there is no dominant team in the AL this year. I think they have as good a shot as anyone.

When the old vets go cold, they're dead weight. Chisholm and the young guys can manufacture runs. Also the vets are prone to simultaneously go shit the bed cold like women syncing menstrual cycles. Kids seem less so.

As bad as the offense been, the Yanks still average over 5 runs per game. The pitching raw material just needs to perform.

Is there a swing and miss pitcher at AA or AAA
arniefez : 7/31/2024 1:17 pm : link
That could be used late in games like Joba and Phil Hughes at the end of the 00's?

I still think there might be a plan for Gil to potentially be that guy if they have 3 other starters they can trust in the playoffs. I can't see winning a World Series with Weaver and Holmes as the top 8th and 9th inning options. But what do I know.
