Warren Sharp @SharpFootball absurd, Daboll's seat is not warm let alone hot Year 1 he took an absolutely horrible roster w #7 most injuries to a playoff win for the first time since 2011 & won coach of the yr Year 2 his QB1 played 4 full games and his subpar roster was #8 most injured his inherited QB1 isn't good, nor is the overall roster NYG aren't expected to be good this year either: they're expected to finish 4th place in the NFCE with fewer than 7 wins none of these poor preseason expectations are because Daboll can't coach QBs, offense or a team... they're because the roster & QB aren't good pure silliness and way too premature to even discuss a "warm seat" at this point if the season goes as expected (poorly) Daboll will get a new QB to work with for a few years and if the season shocks everyone (and they're successful with Jones) then all this talk is moot |
Personally, I think the roster is has improved a lot over what Schoen inherited, but I have grave doubts about the QB corps. Jones is hurt a lot, Lock isn't good as good as Tyrod Taylor and DeVito hasn't beaten out Lock (yet.).
This is Schoen and Daboll's roster. QB I understand they had different plans in the spring, but they did re-sign him. That said, they are not finishing 4th in the NFCE.
That's a fair retort & one I don't necessarily disagree with. That said-& I know he hasn't meddled in 'Hard Knocks'-I'd put good $ on Mara all but letting it be known Jones was going nowhere after '22. Just look @ his public comments.
"Lemonade out of lemons" in 2022, with a few good breaks he can do as well, or better this year. Forget the nay-sayers, the man knows what he's doing.
It's young talent that has to play up to expectations, but this team was built how everyone says they want a team built. Now it's time to see if the seeds sprout.
Please stop with this. Daboll and Schoen chose to commit to Jones as their QB. They may not have drafted him, but they made the decision that he was their guy.
Let me get this straight, picking ANY qb at 6, even the 4th or 5th ranked qb isn’t forcing the pick, but picking any qb next April is forcing a pick.
No question marks as I know the answer.

It would be a shame if Dabs never got a shot here with a legit QB.

Eh, I don't necessarily disagree with you. But I think there was a lot of pressure from above to commit to Jones. Of course this is me speculating, but as Eric said on the BBI podcast the other day...it would have been fascinating to have the Giants on Hard Knocks last offseason to see what John said about retaining Jones.
How many Gettleman holdovers are there on the roster?
Jones
Thomas
Dexter
Slayton
Anyone else? Gano?
All of them were extended by Schoen.
Three full drafts/off-seasons in it's his roster now they're calling shitty.

Why would anyone believe that signing jones to a deal that sees him paid as a mid level starter and one with escape room literally 7 months from now, actually preclude the team from upgrading the qb position before too long? What the fuck is going on around here?
The giants signed a FA OT that will all but render Neal a backup and he was the 7th overall pick TWO years ago. The Giants have upgraded or replaced highly paid or highly drafted players all the time. They will do so again once they can draft or sign a better QB over jones.
One more time, jones was the best qb the giants could sign in 23 and he’s the best qb on the roster now. He’s gone when the giants find a better player. They tried last April, it didn’t happen.
He’s easy to forget.
In 2023, Schoen put more fingerprints on the roster, and re-signed Jones, and the team pulled back.
So, who should really be on a hotseat?

+1
The biggest challenge in my view is whether his ego is convincing him he can get to the promise land with spare parts.
Because we've seen what he can do with a high powered QB.

I've said something similar. Daboll seems so confident in his coaching and system that he may believe he can make chicken salad with anyone.
I love the chutzpah, but that doesn't really get you to the biggest prizes.
I'd take Daboll at head coach, GM, and this point probably quarterback too.
But the Giants don't fire GMs and keep coaches.
What you are describing is the "I'm-so-glad-Gettleman-is-no-longer-hear" syndrome.
Optically, we've gone from having a GM who looks and sounds like the owner of an autobody repair shop to a GM who looks and sounds like a GM should.

But Schoen is so great! Haha. Listen, of course I want the dude to succeed, but it drives me up the wall when I read BBIers praising him & declaring we got our GM for the next decade. Based on what? I don't get it. And I hope we go 11-6 or something this fall & I'm eating these posts.

bw in dc, yup.
While I think Joe is a better GM than Dave, that isn't saying much to me. Gettleman might be the worst GM in NFL history alongside Millen.
Here we are going into year three & over over/under is what...6.5?
Schoen may be safer because he's willing to deal and manage Mara's palpitations.
Daboll would probably say, "JFC, John. Are you kidding me? Just STFU and enjoy your money and I will figure this out..."
Soft touch vs hard touch... ;)
Daniel Jones - $4M
to
Jones/Lock/DeVito - $55M
If this is what trying looks like, please stop trying.
Yep. In a down QB year. That’s how we got stuck with Jones.
But...Giants football...FEEL THE EXCITEMENT!
If this team starts off slow this season...oh man. It'll be UGLY fast. They better win Week 1 vs. Minny @ home.
The key would be the OL. If they end up the season looking like a middle-of-the-league line, then you have what looks like a very good young WR group (Nabers-Hyatt-Robinson) and a promising TE group (Bellinger-Johnson).
Over on the defense, you'd have potentially 4 top players in the front 7 (Lawrence-Burns-Okereke-Thibideaux). The secondary has Banks and Pinnock and a bunch of young guys who might look good by the end of the year.
If the team plays well and with promise for the future, they'll have a lot of good players under team control for 2-4 years each.
If Jones can come up with a big year, he'll be in a great spot for his future. If he doesn't, I think he might just be let go with the Giants looking for a veteran to replace him. A developmental QB with a long start-up period looks like a poor choice.

So we are going to force a QB pick in 2025? I thought we couldn't do that.
Yep. In a down QB year. That’s how we got stuck with Jones.
I'm still waiting to get a good answer to this question:
If the Giants decide to move on from Jones after (or during) the 2024 season and they're picking around 7-10 in this draft... what do they do then?

If Dak is available, I fear we will be in those sweepstakes.
Happy with Cousins?...
I actually don't think they'll want to move on from Jones. If they weren't going to move on after his horrendous (on the field and health-wise) 2023, why would they move on after a 2024 that figures to be better?
The point is even if they finally come to their senses, they've left themselves few good options.

make a trade for a vet, just like any other time a team needs a QB. They tried trading up this year, they didn’t want lesser prospects, it is what it is.

Because the cap implications made cutting him this offseason difficult and they didn’t want to pull what Denver did with Wilson. That is substantially reduced after 2024 so Jones has less leeway. I don’t think they were in a better position after 2024 season if they viewed JJM/Penix/Nix as future DJ types (players you need to surround with talent and scheme properly just to barely coax a playoff appearance). If they are that level we have not improved our QB position and we don’t have the benefit of someone like Nabers. This is not 2018 because guys like Tyreek Hill can make mediocre QB talent look better than they are. There isn’t any RB that has done that consistently in a long time.
Because the cap implications made cutting him this offseason difficult and they didn’t want to pull what Denver did with Wilson.
But Denver is taking their cap medicine right away and starting the process of grooming their first round QB (Nix).
That's not the worst plan.

It is if you believe that Nix is no better than Daniel Jones. If Nix turns into Case Keenum Denver will not look smart.
-The Bears were so bad in his first year that he earned the first pick in the draft.
Kwesi Adofo-Mensah (Minnesota): 20-14
-Very strong 2022, but 0-1 in the playoffs to NYG.
Dave Ziegler (Las Vegas): Fired
Joe Schoen (NYG): 15-18-1
-The only of the group that has a playoff win.
Schoen is a big TBD to me. But, if you don't address how much difficult his job has been based on circumstances you aren't being fair imo. If Schoen drafts Stroud after going 6-11 in 2022, my guess everyone would throw a parade for him.
Any criticism of Schoen is frustration he hasn't solved QB yet and signed Jones to a middling QB contract based on the current market.

Trade a 2nd round pick for Kirk Cousins? Contract is doable and have to imagine the Falcons will want to move to Penix.
I think they will have some good games on offense but he just does not seem to emphasize the physicality that is needed in this division and even more so when it comes to navigating the NFC playoffs imv.

Schoen is a professional NFL GM getting paid millions of dollars. That's a rare job. So, I'm not buying this sympathy you are trying to sell here.
He's not the GM for the South Sudan basketball team.

Watching Daboll on Hard Knocks, he's the really impressive football mind. Schoen is eh.
The level excitement Dabs exhibits with Nabers is making me pumped for the season. New York Basketball Giants baby.
