#Bucs OG Sua Opeta suffered a torn ACL at camp this week, per source.
Opeta had signed with Bucs in free agency and got hurt during Tuesday’s practice.

Sua Opeta had been competing with Ben Bredeson for the starting left guard position. The two were rotating who got reps with the starters. Huge development in what was considered the top competition in Bucs camp.

Tough break for Opeta, but Bredeson may benefit because of the injury, and in turn the Giants would as well. Need Bredeson to start in Tampa and play a significant percentage of snaps in order to get a fourth-round compensatory pick rather than a 7th.
Shepard only received a 1-year, $1,377,500 contract.
Not that funny. Shepard may be more productive with Mayfield than he ever was with the Giants, at least until he gets concussed.
He was awful last season. I think he’s done. Great guy and teammate but done.
And if his value were to increase with playing time to no more than a fourth round, it would not change the current projection for the Giants to net one fourth round comp pick (currently, from McKinney), because the Giants only have one more FA lost than gained. And that wouldn't change.

they need his contract to cancel out lock, and for it to do that it has to rank high enough to be a qualifier. that's why this injury helps guarantee his spot and probably more snaps.
his contract is already somewhat safely above the qualifying point for a 7th rounder with his snaps estimated at 42%, but the more snaps he plays the more secure it stays. each 1% higher is another point in the total column of the formula. his contract is 50 points above the threshold already at 42%, so the bigger risk would be him getting cut early, but that's unlikely since his whole deal is guaranteed and tampa has no comp pick reason to cut him early. if he gets hurt they couldnt cut him either.
side note, if the giant cut Drew Lock before the cutoff for comp pick qualifying, they could possibly pick up an extra day 3 pick but it would probably be close to mr. irrelevant so probably not really worth it unless its somehow the difference in getting the mckinney pick or not.

My understanding is that whether Bredeson counts or not depends on his playing time.

to my understanding, although Bredeson is currently assigned a 7th round value in the comp pick cancellation formula, the Giants do not get a comp pick for him, because he is canceled out.

he is on the borderline where he may qualify either way, extra playing time helps make that a more sure thing.

He currently cancels out, but is dangerously close to the bottom of the list in terms of qualifying for cancellation. Had he dropped below the line or was cut so that he no longer qualified for formula the best the Giants could have hoped for is a “net value” comp pick which would probably be Mr. Irrelevant. If there are not enough comp picks after cancellations then they look at “net value” of what teams lost. For example, if you lost a bunch of 4th and 5th round guys but they were cancelled out by an equal number of 6th and 7th round guys the “net value” of what you lost was high.
