Special Teams Coordinator Michael Ghobrial – Approx. 9:15 a.m.
Defensive Coordinator Shane Bowen – 9:25 a.m.
Assistant Head Coach/Offensive Coordinator Mike Kafka – 9:35 a.m.
Practice – 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
Players Available – Approx. 12:10 p.m.
That's the least of it. In season, team are allowed 11 total padded practices over the first 11 weeks and then 3 the rest of the way.
Teams can only practice in pads every other week in the most crucial six weeks of the season.
And the NFL wonders why everyone is getting hurt so bad.
At all levels.
One of the reasons OL play and tackling is bad because these kids start with flag football and don't learn how to properly block or tackle until HS.
The NFL should have 2 a days, a padded practice and a walkthrough/shells. I wouldn't be shocked if padded practices are eliminated or reduced when 18 games becomes the norm.

The biggest issue to me os the amount of rest time in all sports. They feel most injuries are from overuse instead of realizing that most injuries are not from overuse but rather going 0 to 100. Look at pitchers in MLB. The new age changes they have made have been horrible for muscles and tendons imo

notable here is that bowen had a lot of success developing amani hooker. he was on titans defensive staff when he was drafted in 2019 when he was a backup as a rookie. he was there when he started contributing more in his second season (3 starts) and then when he became defensive coordinator he moved him in as a full time starter.
belton was hooker's replacement at iowa at their "cash" position after he got drafted in 2019.
They never actually played together at Iowa, but Belton studied Hooker on film to see how he handled the cash position.
“Those comparison, that can be fair,” Belton said. “Some people say were very close. But in all honestly, whether they are close or not, I feel he’s a great player and someone I can model my game after.”
@PLeonardNYDN
Greg Van Roten will begin practicing at center today, per Brian Daboll, and also at guard. JMS is still out. Runyan will play a lot of left guard. Daboll says all of this cross-training of players at center has nothing to do with confidence in JMS. Just his health. Tyler Nubin is practicing today for first time, per Daboll. Carter Coughlin is out with a lower body injury. Dexter Lawrence will do something

No it isn't. It is real. But it cannot linger. By the end of this week it should be settled out or close. Nabers is new. Hyatt got little time last season. It is not just timing but the QB and WR being on the same page with read (which is a whole different issue with Jones). Good news is there is not much difference in speed between Nabers, Hyatt and Slayton. They are all very fast, talking hundredths of a second.
I hate to give Jones backing, but there is absolutely a need to get the timing between QB and WR correct.

Brock Purdy throwing INTS in camp
Joe Burrow overthrowing receivers in camp
Josh Allen throwing three INTs in a row in camp
Trevor Lawrence not looking good in camp
But only in NY is this an issue the FIRST week of camp..
Well, in case you forgot, all of the aforementioned have had regular season production that Jones can't sniff.

Nothing will do that.
Jones could throw 22 60+ yard TD dime completions in a row and the BBI DJH crew would bitch about two that were a cm short.

That's not arm strength. All NFL QBs can throw lofted deep balls.
Arm strength is being able to throw lasers into tight windows in the 10–30-yard range, especially outside the hashes.

Daniel Jones bounced back with his best practice of camp after his worst on Tuesday. He threw a really nice deep ball for a TD to Malik Nabers, who got behind Cor’Dale Flott, and a deep TD to a wide-open Jalin Hyatt on a scramble drill. Also had a nice pass to Theo Johnson up the seam. Lowlight was an interception by Dyontae Johnson off an impressive leaping tip by Bobby Okereke on a pass into traffic over the middle.

•Probably the best day from Daniel Jones so far. Got the ball in right spots outside of tipped up INT. Good deep ball to Nabers. Hyatt deep catch had to be waited for but a catch nonetheless
•Twice Isaiah Simmons tipped up an INT to Alex Johnson who is working at safety
•Dyontae Johnson continues to get 1st team work and had 2 would be sacks before his interception on Jones
•Theo Johnson now leads all TE’s in catches from Jones this camp with a seam catch & screen grab

Miller received some first team reps today but did have two drops. Love to see the extra work he’s putting in, especially in this heat.
The real answers to the questions will come over time -- say the first half of the season. Can he deliver the ball to all depths of the field in a variety of scenarios consistently?

Why would that be "eye roll worthy?" Bricillo wants to see what he has as backup centers. Runyan and Van Roten are vets that can afford a day at center.

Nabers, Hyatt, Theo, Banks, Nubin, Phillips, Tracy, Dyontae Johnson..
I also feel like the OL has a shot at not being a disaster with the 3 vet starters they’ve added. Eluemunor is going to surprise some people if he stays at RT..

Ok Mr Nit Picky...he doesn't have to have a perfect over the shoulder pass when his guy is 4 yards open in the EZ. The danger is overthrowing and having it go OB or through the EZ. In fact it was a perfect pass, it was easily caught and well clear of Flott.

There was an enormous spike in ACL tears the first year of the new CBA (2020). Concussions went way up too. Injuries increased markedly after Covid; a study concluded that was due to canceling pre-season.

If you are going to run a sprint, do you walk up and run one or do you warm up first? There is too much rest and going from 0 to 100 for these athletes.

Absolutely. The players say the same thing. And the year I saw data for (21 I think), 58% of injuries happened pre-season and something like 25% games 1-4.
The NFLPA represents vets first and foremost, who have a whole year's pay riding on making it to opening day healthy. Plus, "old school" vets would prefer to skip camp. The NFL gets no pre-season revenue. It adds up to a bad deal for fans that isn't likely to be reversed.

Eric, I know YOU know this - QBs are coached to err on the underthrow side on long balls. Overthrows are guaranteed incomplete or picks.
Pretend it was DeVito who threw it. Or Mahomes. Maybe it was shorter than intended if he could have it back. Or not.
The grand total of BBIers who'd bitch if Mahomes threw that completion is precisely equal to the number predicting an MVP season for Jones.
They have signed a number of veteran CBs.

I was thinking about one of the more established vets. Howard, Jackson, Gilmore et al
But some of this is the back-and-forth nature of camp. If Nabers wasn't beating Cor'Dale Flott, we'd be pretty concerned about Nabers.
On the second throw, the only DB in the picture is Dane Belton.
Also, Bowen just praised Flott this morning.
@DDuggan21
New ST coordinator Michael Ghobrial has some creative drills. Here he had punt returners stand with their backs to the line and turn to find the ball after it was kicked. Isaiah McKenzie handled it smoothly.
With McKenzie and Gunner Olszewski, the Giants have two quality NFL returners after so many years of trying (unsuccessfully) to patch the position together.

Don't get me wrong, I am thrilled with the WR group. Maybe the best raw talent as a group that this franchise has ever had? But Flott still feels like a slot or nickel corner to me. As does Phillips. And not sure at all about Hawkins, Johnson, Long, Owens et al. It is frankly my only major concern other than injury depth for this defense.

You do realize that Nabers was doing the same thing to Banks
- perhaps not 4 yards open but still open. It isn't just Flott. Naber was doing this in the SEC too.
Also it is a new defense, so there still may be communication breakdowns between CBs and safeties.

That was my first thought too. Those throws need to be in front so they get YAC, not behind where the defender can stop them right away
@DDuggan21
Notes from today's Giants practice:
• Veteran offensive lineman Greg Van Roten, who was signed on Tuesday, was thrown right into the mix. Van Roten has mostly been a guard during his career, but he has some experience at center. With John Michael Schmitz sitting out his fourth straight practice, Van Roten was inserted as the starting center.
The 34-year-old is still working into football shape, so he only took the first two reps of team periods before being replaced by Austin Schlottman. Van Roten didn't participate in the final team period of practice, which was an up-tempo move-the-ball period.
Expect Van Roten to settle in at right guard when Schmitz returns, but the Giants clearly have concerns with their backup center options based on the center reps they've given Van Roten and Jon Runyan, who worked exclusively at left guard today.
• Second-round pick Tyler Nubin returned after missing five practices with a calf injury. Nubin split reps on the second-team defense as he ramped up.
• Veteran WR Isaiah McKenzie had his most active practice of camp. He got reps with the first-team offense in 4-WR sets with Darius Slayton's workload reduced. McKenzie caught one pass from Daniel Jones and three passes from Drew Lock.
• The Giants continue to experiment with a ton of different personnel groupings. Running backs Devin Singletary and Tyrone Tracy were on the field together for a few plays today.
• Rookie RB Dante Miller got some first-team reps today. He dropped passes from Jones and Tommy DeVito.
• With this being a heavy second/third-and-long practice, the defense was in dime often. Dru Phillips was the slot corner with Nick McCloud at LB next to Bobby Okereke.
• Dyontae Johnson continues to take advantage of first-team reps with Micah McFadden (hamstring) still on a pitch count and Carter Coughlin (lower body) not practicing. Johnson had an interception of Jones off of an Okereke tip and a sack.
The key for Johnson to make a real push for a roster spot will be on special teams. Coughlin and Matthew Adams are established special teamers and Darius Muasau is a rookie draft pick.
• Kayvon Thibodeaux beat Andrew Thomas twice today. He may have had a sack on the deep TD pass to Malik Nabers and he definitely would have had a sack later in practice. Thibodeaux got in the backfield so quickly on the second play that I had to confirm that it was actually Thomas at LT.
• The Giants practiced full-team kickoff returns for the first time during camp. McKenzie and Gunner Olszewski were the first pair back. They were followed by Miller/Tyrone Tracy and Jacob Saylors/Ayir Asante.

That ball should quiet the arm strength may layers. He looks like he threw that from the left hash mark to the right sideline of the end zone from 50 plus yards out.
That's not arm strength. All NFL QBs can throw lofted deep balls.
Arm strength is being able to throw lasers into tight windows in the 10–30-yard range, especially outside the hashes.

That is exactly what I was talking about on the Podcast. That was a horrible throw by Jones. Tracy has to turn around to get it, making all momentum come to a stop.
Since when, in football, all passes have to be perfect. Watch games and see how many great catches are made by receivers off bad passes.

He does the same thing more often than not in games as well. Go rewatch every game and you’ll see at least 70% of his passes don’t allow guys any opportunity to run after the catch.

Regretfully, you are spot on…..DJ is not proficient at leading receivers….it is a skill to anticipate where the runner will be when you throw it ahead of him….some have it, some don’t…..i think DJ is in that latter camp….sorry to say too

wait what? Is that your response to a QB constantly throwing crossing passes behind the receiver? Wow, ok then.

Aaron Rodgers seems to have no problem completing passes to Garret Wilson.

Jesus Christ, I feel like Tony Soprano listening to Paulie Walnuts bitching about his shoe laces getting wet in the men's restroom. This, while Jones is clearly having himself a day today. I can't even...
This has nothing to do with the day Jones had.
It's about people confusing a long pass with arm strength/talent.

I don't think people are following you around. That isn't how the site works unless someone is clicking on your handle to specifically do that. And it isn't just you. There are a handful that are doing this. We get the point but a lot of threads like this get destroyed when we just want to find out information, not opinions. There are a lot of opinion threads. One like this is about what happened at practice. I don't think you destroyed this thread but it is the same dead horse getting beat. There is nothing that is going to change this year with our group of QBs. Harping on it isn't going to change anything.
I think the word you are looking for is fascinated
I am fascinated how many people are impressed with some of these throws Jones is making.

Our GM implied that guy wouldn't have been able to do anything here last year behind our offensive line.
That's a line which, by the way, he put together and he did not add to in the 2024 draft.

Yep he did. I suppose he put together the injuries to all five starters for a large part of the season, too, while he was at it.
Now, over all, it was a truly poor line. Add to that all the injuries and you get a disaster - which truly happened. 85 sacks don't happen by mistake.
But the questions for you is, whether or not this current line is better than last years line(sans draft pick). On paper it is noticeably better. Do you think a draft pick was going to do better than the FAs they signed?
You need to chose which position you would have taken(clearly you would have taken Penix) so QB is position 1. When did you plan on upgrading CB, Safety and WR? After OG/OT or later if at all?
Seeing as how Sy'56 had Evan Neal and Joe Alt rated the same(at 87) how do we know Alt isn't another Evan Neal?

Jones’ arm strength isn’t being questioned, it’s his long range accuracy. And that TD pass to Malik was short. Watch the video again. Jones was lucky Flott was beat badly.
Could be and he does seem a fraction late on some throws. However as a QB you NEVER want to overthrow a wide open receiver. A ball that is slightly underthrown can be caught or get a PI. An overthrow will bever be caught. Overthrow is acceptable with tight coverage.
A throw that over throws a WR with 4 steps on the DB or one that is underthrown?
A throw that over throws a WR with 4 steps on the DB or one that is underthrown?
Overthrown cannot be caught, so a waste of time. Underthrown can be caught but also defended or INT'd. I think a slight underthrow is better. At least your guy has a chance to make the catch.

And overthrow can’t be intercepted. A slight underthrow can be. If anything a slight overthrow is the ideal miss because a WR can still try to get under it. Why would anyone prefer a throw the defense has a chance to make a play on?

Well, that isn't true all the time. If it is cover 2 and you overthrow the WR, you can be getting picked by the safety. Every situation is different. Yes, there are times that you don't want to overthrow the WR and give that player a chance. I played CB and S. The two hardest routes for me to cover were the underthrown fade ball and a dig route. If a fade is underthrown then it often times leads to pass interference. That is in man coverage with no safety help, so yes teams are taught to do that over overthrowing. If it is cover 2 and a safety is over the top, you are throwing to the spot between the CB and S. It is the WRs job to be there and make the play.
With all of that said, I agree that Jones has been off on a lot of throws we have seen this camp. I just find it funny that the passes he is completing deep are the ones getting picked on instead of the one to Tracy today. That was really bad.
Do yourself a favor and bow out. The Jones hate obsession has incredible stamina. They are the irresistible force.

I would sign up for a questionable OL at this point.

Let me make sure I have this correct.
So, Mahomes racing to his left and throwing back across his body - and the field - with a flick of the wrist for a 60-yard strike doesn't impress you?

I get that but you were talking in generalities asking where this is coming from and then said overthrows can't be intercepted. You weren't talking specifically about these throws today.

robbie we are not talking about crossing routes and digs. We are talking about deep balls. The discussion is about the pass to Hyatt that was slightly underthrown and the others that Jones threw during the past week.
You are correct that an overthrow on routes underneath can be intercepted by the coverage behind those routes if over thrown. But that is not what was being discussed.

Pfffftttttt. Threw it as high and far as he could. Whoopdedo. That's training camp hoopla.
And by the way, it was a full arm throw (not a flick of the wrist) and he wasn't 'racing' to his left when he released it.
Yup. It's all lining up...

Hell, the owner telegraphed as much this afternoon. God forbid we get a rash of injuries on the OL or WR & it'll be, 'Well...how could poor Daniel succeed with all those injuries? He needs healthy All Pros @ each position to be somewhat good!'
On a different note, someone mentioned that arm strength is not determined by the deep pass, maybe so. How soon we forget about 2022 when he was zipping the ball into small windows. Listen, I like him and want to see him play with descent surroundings. Do I know if he's going to be good enough, I'm not an expert, same as most on this board, but if I had to guess, I say yes. I know some are going to say it's been 5 years, yes 5 years with the same lousy supporting cast, so nothing has changed. After giving him a shot with competent support we can make a more informed decision.
Might be the funniest post ever made on this site

You might be right about part if that statement. But a lot of the reason is that it's been over 20 years since a QB as bad as Jones has been given 6 years as a starter for one team. If Darnold, Trubisky, etc were handed 6 years of their fans lives, it would certainly be similar.

It's not just Jones, it's football in general. People have no clue what they're watching or talking about yet have almost unlimited access to the team during the week etc. To me, the access has jumped the shark. I almost miss the days when we had no clue what was going on until the games were on.
Look here - you've got a bunch of arm chair GMs that have decided Jones won't be good with a decent set of receivers and OL. Because they watch Twitter videos and stayed at a Holiday Inn last night. You've got people that actually believe the BS they pull out of their azz is legit.
There is a lot of noise about Jones. Because this never happens. No other fan base has to watch the same bad QB for this long.

Exactly. If Jones was drafted by any of the other 31 teams he'd already be on his 2nd team at minimum.
