The Penn State product has the size and speed to be a steal, which is what the Giants’ front office saw in him before selecting him.
Head coach Brian Daboll has made it clear to Johnson that he is expecting Rob Gronkowski-level production from his new tight end.
“There’s countless times where we’ll be in the middle of a meeting and he’ll be like, ‘Theo, Dabs wants to see you,'” Johnson told Art Stapleton of NorthJersey.com. “Pulls me out of the meeting and I’m like, ‘What could this possibly be about?’
“And then he’s got up a clip of Gronk just running somebody over, catching a back shoulder, and he’s like, ‘This is what we expect from you.’ I can tell he puts a lot of intentional eye into the tight end position … I think it goes to show how he feels about me and what he thinks I’m capable of.”

In order to do that, of course, requires the QB to do his part.
Which Gronk had...
I like him more and more as I do some research
Big kid with an attitude/decent hands and speed
Blocking is solid
I think he may be a surprise
I'd take Bavaro level....

Bavaro was better than Gronk in pretty much every way.

Hey! Let's turn this into a DJ thread! That sounds fun!

He expects way too little from his rookies.

Bavaro Was great.
Gronkowski is a HOFer. First ballot.

Different games and different eras. Bavaro was perfect for his time and how TEs were used. I love Bavaro but if you told me Theo Johnson could become the next Bavaro or the next Gronk, I would take the next Gronk. It is just s different game now.

Fresh take.
Never has a TE produced good numbers with a mere mortal QB throwing the ball. Never.

This is predigested mush.

Where? I love Bavaro but what could he do that Gronk didn't?
Bavaro was 6'4", 245. Gronk was bigger 6'6", 260+. Gronk was basically another RT for the Pats and Scarnecchia.
We will see. if Theo has that mindset.

Bully ball-there's a term I haven't heard since coaching HS ball -where sometimes you are bullied, and sometimes you are the bully.

I know as Giants fans our first tendency is to say this, but realistically it's not true. Both are great, both were great for their era. Gronk was absolutely not in any way a lesser player than Bavaro. And I say this with Bavaro absolutely in the discussion as my favorite Giant ever.
offensive player I would trade him for. Vacuum for hands and could block like an extra lineman. Having that guy with that size and attitude going over the middle was next level.
So was Bavaro. He sometimes blocked DEs one on one. I know you know that.

Right - Bavaro was a brilliant blocker. I just wanted to underscore that same skill with Gronk.

Bavaro had an injury shortened career. Given a choice between them, and considering the different eras in which they played, it's Bavaro all the way.

You're right Sy. Bavaro was a comparative pussy. He had to have his jaw wired before he went back ofn the field...Gronk would have just ripped off his jaw and kept going. And I won't even mention Bavaro carrying all those 49ers! Of course Gronk was great, but my preference overall is Bavaro.
Everyone wants a Kelce/Kittle/LaPorta - Johnson must have some warts to his game that the hype is glossing over. However, it's possible the last decade of Giants football has left me slightly jaded...
Agree, Bavaro was a HOF type but will probably never make it.
He was touchdown oriented all day, if he had to drag tacklers with him, that was OK with
Gronk was a lot more Shockey like, (both MFs). They loved hitting people, whether they were in their way or not.
(I believe that Sy has also agrees); Theo is probably the better pure athlete RAS Score = 9.93, but Bowers (couldn't test because of injury is pretty close).
What makes Bowers so scarry is his, speed, if you don't control him at the L.O.S. (4.53 forty at 243), he's gone.
I am delighted to have 260 pound Theo, he has all the tools to become the next Gronk.
