John Mara spoke for the first time since March after the mural unveiling at Hackensack University Medical Center. He hit on a bunch of topics, including:
• Mara wouldn’t give specific expectations for the season but said “obviously I want to show significant improvement.”
• Mara on Daniel Jones: “I’m still happy we gave him that contract.” Wants to see Jones with a better O-line and weapons.
• Mara said he was “very surprised” Bill Belichick didn’t get a HC job this offseason. Mara believes the 72-year-old can still coach at a high level.
@charlottecrrll
Giants co-owner John Mara: “I want to walk off the field at the end of the season feeling like we’re moving in the right direction.” #giants
#Giants John Mara: I’m still glad we gave Daniel Jones that contract. He earned it.
But his seeming endless affinity for Jones is something I want a 30 for 30 on one day.
I'm not sure it is an overreaction to react to (1) I'm glad Jones got that contract. (2) I'm surprised Belichick is still out there. (3) I expect the team to be better.
He should have demurred on the first point (for obvious reasons - he should know the impression he's given off, Mr. Magoo). And if you combine points (2) and (3), there is one obvious prediction.
I - Last year he got hurt
N - When he was playing we weren't blocking anybody
G - We got some weapons around him
O - Let's give him a chance
How can you feel confident with this guy as the CEO?

John Mara’s nephew Tim McDonnell, who is the Giants’ director of personnel, was shown in Hard Knocks as a prominent figure in the front office. Mara bristled when asked about what McDonnell brings to his role.
“His talent evaluation skills, his work ethic and the respect that he has, not only in our building, but around the league,” Mara said. “Sometimes I get tired of reading he’s only there because he’s my nephew. You go and check with people around the league, you see what kind of respect he has a personnel executive.”

John, we aren’t fucking idiots. He’s only where he is because he’s The Nephew. Don’t insult our intelligence.

Can we trade him to another team's front office for a pick?

For a person who pays such close attention to fan feelings and reactions, he has almost no media savvy at all.

Yeah. Dabs better win in 24 or BB is here to fix Jones.
In other words, he still agrees with Schoen's decision.
;)

I’m sure another owner would say they are unhappy with the contract?
The Belichick comment was the most/only interesting thing he said.

His “he doesn’t only have his job because he’s my nephew" T-shirt has people asking a lot of questions already answered by his shirt.
I’d put good $ on him being our head coach in six months or so.

That is a very defensive answer by John. I hope that didn't give him palpitations.
We need a reporter to actually check around the league to fact check this claim.

Tim is S.T.D.
Smart. Tough. Dependable.
But for a CEO who has overseen the worst team in the conference over the last 10 years, a little self awareness and a little less defensiveness would be welcome.

It would be a very on-brand move for Mara. Looking backwards for answers.
Continuing to say that DJ is still on scholarship and putting all of the pressure on his teammates and the coaching staff, even referring fondly to Bill Belichick, just sucks the positive energy out of the locker room at precisely the wrong moment for this team.
Hey John - please do yourself and this franchise a favor and stop speaking to the media!
This.
Seems to get more embarrassing as the years go by.
Ugh.
It’s the nonstop excuse making like Jones’ is a child that is tiresome.
Nowhere in that clip was any criticism of Jones’ play - just criticism of everyone else’s play. It has to be increasingly frustrating to be another player on the team and constantly getting thrown under the bus while one guy and one guy only gets coddled.
Of course I expect guys like JMS and Evan Neal to get similar treatment from John, in that they’re given 6 years to finally do something of value….

But yet he gave his blessing to trade for his replacement
I’d argue that is more important than what was said in a press conference
He would never be that bold.
But he could say, "Look, we like Daniel and the work he's put in to get ready for this season. But it's season six and we just need to see more quality..."
Between this, and the front office having to constantly walk Mara through the draft and FA strategy in depth as we saw during Hard Knocks, it's seems clear that Mara is directly involved in the day to day player/football side of the business.

Indeed.
Do you think McVey and Snead have to do this dance with the Rams owner?
I doubt it.
And yet he was ok with trading to replace him
Quote:
Saying he is happy with Daniel's contract and continuing to excuse his horrific record of performance by blaming everybody else is just beyond ridiculous at this point. The right comment from a competent owner is "We expect Daniel to live up to the contract that was given to him. There are no more excuses this year. It is time to perform at a level commensurate with the percentage of our salary cap that he will be occupying in 2024. A level that requires him to put this team on his back, elevate the players around him and carry this team to a successful year."
He would never be that bold.
But he could say, "Look, we like Daniel and the work he's put in to get ready for this season. But it's season six and we just need to see more quality..."
Of course, you are right. I was just projecting my inner George Steinbrenner. But the idea that he is excusing DJ by throwing his teammates and the coaches under the bus could not be more nauseating at this point.

Who cares if he was comfortable with the cost
Bottom line….he gave the blessing to replace him…
That is what matters
Not what he said in a press conference

Well, he wasn’t exactly totally gung ho about it and I’m sure Joe picked up that vibe too.
I don’t think it’s a stretch to say that John really, really likes Jones.
You saw it throughout Hard Knocks.
I just re-watched four of the first five episodes for the BBI podcast tonight. When you re-watch and turn captions on (you have to because Mara mumbles at times), it's not good. I will highlight the relevant parts tonight.

Blessing to look, it never got to a point where he had to give his ok on an actual deal, so we don’t know if he actually would have went through with it.

I think Mara loves the Giants more than any person alive. I also think he’s the biggest impediment to this team winning.

He lives and breathes this team. But he obviously falls in love with the faces of the franchise, even if it isn't good for the team.

For a CEO, he lacks any kind of "leadership / inspiration qualities".
Come on. He didn’t give a full throated endorsement.
And I would bet Joe picked up on that.

Daniel Jones is not the problem with the Giants. The problem is, and has been, the way John Mara runs the organization.
- He bungled the new stadium
- He bungled the handling of the three best assets he was lucky enough to inherit: Reese, Coughlin, and Manning
- He populated the organization with family members and general mistakes
This organization has lost its way, completely and utterly.
I’m 100% convinced Mara breathed a sigh of relief we didn’t take a QB.

Bottom line….JS had the authority to replace him and would have done so if NE was willing to move
All this other stuff is BS
I agree that Mara should STFU….at the same time…he gave the OK to replace DJ and that is what matters the most

I said repeatedly I wanted the Giants to land any one of the six QBs in the draft. Penix was my favorite, but it didn't have to be him. And you can kid yourself all you want - the Giants have a type at QB. The QB is their face of the franchise, the extension of the Mara family in the field, the guy that sells the Toyotas and Dunkin Donuts. They want John Glenn at QB.

His inability to seperate his feelings from reality continue to demonstrate this in spades.
His big attempt to make his leadership team look better and like he doesn't meddle landed in the opposite way. The fact that he can't watch the footage and know that no one in their right mind would think his nephew was there on merit is nothing short a sad reflection of him as a leader.
The Jones stuff is par for the course at this point. If he couldn't keep his mouth shut to save his team some money on their most expensive player in a capped league he isn't going to start now.
I'm tired of hearing what a good person he is. Throwing his other players under the bus constantly and basically throwing a middle finger to fans disappointed in the Jones contract is anything but the mark of one. He shouldn't be glad he gave DJ that contract. Not in any way shape or form. It is shameful. It is the mark of an unaware, selfish person that puts his own feelings above the success of his organization.
Anyone that doesn't see the connection between his behavior and our record over the last decade is being just as intentionally aloof as he is. You are letting him tug at your feelings enough to not properly evaluate his work.
Naturally, none of us expect that would ever happen. But the way they forced him into 5 straight episodes was cringeworthy

And the race card comes up again
Tell us how the conversation would go with Jerry Reese, Mark Ross and Brandon Brown on they can only draft a QB of a certain race?
And yet….they would have traded up for Daniels

They didn't make a serious offer.

That could be….absolutely
At the same point and time…he did give his blessing to replace him
And serious about giving up 2 1st's plus more to replace him.
People that are happy with their QBs don't pay big packages to replace them.
I bet if you asked the Falcons if they'd give up their first this year and next year for Penix plus their 3rd rounder and more they wouldn't have taken him.
And they were as itchy to replace their high paid starter as anyone.
The Mara Giants are more interested in placating fans enough to do whatever they want than doing whatever it takes to win.
How anyone could watch the conversation JS had with New England and say the team was motivated to move up is beyond me.
Between this, and the front office having to constantly walk Mara through the draft and FA strategy in depth as we saw during Hard Knocks, it's seems clear that Mara is directly involved in the day to day player/football side of the business.

Friendly reminder that Tim's mother owns the same 4.17% of the team that Tim's uncles do. Tim isn't there because his uncle owns the team. Tim is there because Tim owns the team.
Apart from that, I agree with everything you said.
The price of what they were offering was fair and given the recent dreadful track record of quarterback busts, offering some kind of "Trey Lance" haul would not have made sense. Plus, I don't think Kraft had any interest in trading the pick for any price. The mistake Schoen made was not taking Milton or Pratt in the sixth round and does reveal the idea that they are now firmly and happily behind DJ now.
Come on. He didn’t give a full throated endorsement.
And I would bet Joe picked up on that.
I think if JS had brought Mara an actual trade proposal, Mara would have vetoed it with the usual excuses. Mara's lack of self-awareness is stunning. In his mind I bet he believes he built the Giants into a successful franchise and he knows best what to do, regardless of what his actual football people think.
Wow, just wow. We are in deep...
I just think John didn’t really want to take a QB and was sorta ‘Meh. Do whatever you want, but it better work.’
So it covers him both sides: he’s not ‘meddling’, but he is letting his preferences be known.
I heard recently, I can't remember where, that the Giants are a strong play (against) in survivor pools and that Jones's TD O/U is 9.5.

9.5?!?!?!!
While De Vito likely had his 15 minutes of fame already, the Giants knew they weren't keeping 4 QBs and maybe felt De Vito and his low ceiling was worth keeping for 2024 when they didn't get one of the top 6 QBs.

I think that number was before he started training camp healthy (presumably). I just checked Draft Kings and the number is 16.5. That is the lowest number of all the guys you can currently bet.
For comparison:
Anthony Richardson 18.5
Bo Nix 17.5
Jayden Daniels 18.5
Russell Wilson 17.5
Will Levis 20.5
Caleb Williams 23.5
Bryce Young 18.5
As a reminder, Jones's 2024 cap hit is $47,855,000.
Schoen: "It would probably have to be pretty significant. So, like a [first-round pick] this year [obviously No. 6 this year], a [first-round pick] next year and something more this year is not going to do it? It's got to be multiples in '25?"
Wolf: "Um, we're in this situation where we just probably sit and pick a quarterback."
Schoen: "Well if anything changes and you wanted to add something on that to take a swing, let me know."
Schoen made a serious / reasonable / more than fair offer IMHO. Wolf said "... going to be something crazy like that."
If Schoen had offered anything close to this year's 1st, 2nd & 3rd and next year's 1st, 2nd and 3rd for the chance to draft Drake Maye, Mara should have fired him on the spot.
Do you want a GM willing to make a crazy offer for QB not even close to being the consensus number 1? I certainly don't.
MSN: 'Hard Knocks': Patriots rejected Giants' draft day trade offer on Maye - ( New Window )
I think, rightly or wrongly, once trading up for one of the top three QBs couldn't happen, the Giants decided to not "half address" the QB situation by taking a flyer on a late round pick. Arguably, taking a flyer on De Vito probably was a better risk / reward trade than a late round QB pick. (Brock Purdys come along very rarely).
The issue for months prior to the draft was whether the Giants liked their QB4 better than WR1B. I think it was clear the Giants liked QB1, QB2 and QB3 better than even WR1A. It would have taken "something crazy" to move up to one of the top 3 picks.
The Giants felt that Nabers as WR1B (or maybe WR1A) was better than QB4.
Time will tell if they were correct.
I just find the whole thing to be beyond depressing, from a tone deaf idiot owner to a middling QB. It's August 1st & I have no illusions of even seriously competing for anything meaningful this year.
Quote:
I was very surprised the Giants didn't draft a QB at all.
While De Vito likely had his 15 minutes of fame already, the Giants knew they weren't keeping 4 QBs and maybe felt De Vito and his low ceiling was worth keeping for 2024 when they didn't get one of the top 6 QBs.
Can’t make the prodigal son uncomfortable.
This actually could be a big part of the problem. Maybe DJ has needed a massive kick in the ass all along? Coddling him clearly makes his teammates resentful. Maybe kicking his ass makes him sympathetic? We saw some of that in 2022 when Daboll got in his face after DJ made that stupid end zone interception nearly blowing the game against the Titans. Maybe he just needs perpetual task mastering?
No doubt Daboll has his work cut out for himself. Especially if he wants to survive and not get wrongfully scapegoated if DJ doesn't do well. Which will indeed be what happens if history tells us anything...
Given QB is the most valuable position on the team, occasionally (regularly?) taking a flyer on a mid / late round QB seems worthwhile (see Cousins taken after RGIII in the same draft; Purdy taken in the same draft as Trey Lance). The Eagles seem to be masters at it unfortunately.
I did get the feeling that the pre Jonesr mid round QB draft picks Reese and Gettleman have been a waste (Rhett Bomar, Andre Woodson, Kyle Lauletta (sp).
Well, before you do that, you're going to have to convince Mara that a player's popularity isn't critical to winning.
John Mara is an awful owner.
DUDE THREW 15 TDS IN '22! FIFTEEN! OMG!
& YES, JONES' PLAY IN '23 IS ALL TO BLAME ON OTHERS.
Mara is a fucking bozo. Thank God The Nephew looks so competent...

What has Jones ever done to warrant such affection? Does he call John 'Mr. Mara' & that's all John needs?
If we suck this year-which I fully expect-I can't wait for another coach-probably BB-to be tasked to fixing Jones come year seven.
& if Jones never even amounts to much, I'm sure he'll be in the Giants ROH because Johnny loves him so much.

if you combine these comments with what we saw in Hard Knocks, it's not absurd or a "conspiracy theory" to suggest that Mara has to be managed.
You saw it throughout Hard Knocks.
I just re-watched four of the first five episodes for the BBI podcast tonight. When you re-watch and turn captions on (you have to because Mara mumbles at times), it's not good. I will highlight the relevant parts tonight.
I think Mara loves the Giants more than any person alive. I also think he’s the biggest impediment to this team winning.
+1 SFGF
I know we make fun of Chris Mara because he spends so much time at the race track. However, I wish he would take John with him.
But his seeming endless affinity for Jones is something I want a 30 for 30 on one day.
You answered your your own question, then took it back... LOL

I get it. Owners talk. And I know he isn’t going to publicly piss on Jones.

There's still a solid minority of Giants fans, both on and off this board, who love Daniel Jones, think he never had a chance, would have been/could be good, etc. It's not just the owner. (Although I wish the owner weren't part of that group.)
I want less of him as well but he is the owner okay one of them.
You claim he runs the team, yet don't want any insight from him. I guess maybe it's because once he speaks on a thing like, we did this for XYZ reason" then the haters can't continue to make up their own reasons, it's easier to call him a liar & maintain whatever stance they have on whatever issue, which seems kinda lazy to me.
Some of you really need to take a step back a notice the difference between someone we are stuck with and someone that knows the anything about leadership.
Yes we are stuck the Mara’s and we’d all like them to be competent. But overwhelming evidence says they are not.
You can downplay that all you want but those are the facts. No one can change that they are in control but we certainly do not have to pretend they are doing a good job when they very clearly aren’t.
Just. Stop.

Mara just loves Jones. Loves him. I can never recall anything like this in my life. It is beyond mystifying. And frustrating AF. HE ISN'T A GOOD QB!

John Mara is on a whole different level than the woulda/coulda/shoulda people. As a rookie Jones did flash certain things which regressed completely under Judge. Seeing Mac Jones react similarly does lend credence to that. The difference is the woulda/coulda/shoulda people realize that Jones has not been that and, when combined with his injury history, should never have been offered the contract he was. The woulda/coulda/shoulda people would not prevent the drafting of a QB even once during Jones’s tenure.
I think if the season is a disaster we'll see a Belichick & Cousins pairing. Go defense in the first round and you'll have a 3-4 year window to win with Belichick.
Again, this is only if Vegas ends up being correct about the team.
But what Mara is - mealy-mouthed, passive-aggressive, craves influence, shirks accountability- is an epic disaster. The "you have full autonomy, XYZ looks pretty good to me, I just want it to work, but be careful about XYZ" is so bad. Cowardly, ineffective, morale sucking.

Not sure Atlanta can trade him so soon. Maybe you’re thinking Dak?
The nephew would do it but he's too busy with all the offers he's getting from other teams.

A cousins trade after the season saves the Falcons $2.5 million according to overthecap

@DDuggan21
Can we trade him to another team's front office for a pick?
The notion that Mara thinks someone would go up to him and say "John, your nephew is a buffoon and the only reason he has a job is because he is a part owner and your nephew.," might be peak Mara. I have no idea if he is respected or not around the league, but Mara vouching for him is absurd. I can imagine every person sees an owner and says "Wow, John your nephew is amazing." Most would recognize that people are being nice, but Mara wants us to fall for these niceties as well. I can't!
And his answer will be:
"Yes. The problems in 2024 were due to Daboll, the OL and the poor performance of our running game due to Schoen's incompetency in letting Barkley go to the Super Bowl Champion Eagles. Now that we have removed Schoen and Daboll and hired Bill Belichick as our new GM/HC, I am very happy that we have now extended DJ's contract for another decade so we will finally have enough time under the right conditions to prove to the world that we made a very smart draft pick back in 2019!"
And he’ll make some excuse for Jones.
I’ve never seen anything like this as a Giants fan. It is beyond ridiculous and bizarre.
He'll run it back with Jones as the starter but unlike previous coaches, he'll actively go for another QB in the draft.
If he comes, it'll be at the expense of Daboll's job and Schoen's power.
Reminding the GM about Barkley's popularity......
literally at the last possible minute.
He wasn't smart enough to realize Saquon was about to deliver an FU waiting for the Giants to get real.
Mara should also check his sources for the Bears Rumor.
