John Mara spoke for the first time since March after the mural unveiling at Hackensack University Medical Center. He hit on a bunch of topics, including:
• Mara wouldn’t give specific expectations for the season but said “obviously I want to show significant improvement.”
• Mara on Daniel Jones: “I’m still happy we gave him that contract.” Wants to see Jones with a better O-line and weapons.
• Mara said he was “very surprised” Bill Belichick didn’t get a HC job this offseason. Mara believes the 72-year-old can still coach at a high level.

Giants co-owner John Mara: “I want to walk off the field at the end of the season feeling like we’re moving in the right direction.” #giants
#Giants John Mara: I’m still glad we gave Daniel Jones that contract. He earned it.
But his seeming endless affinity for Jones is something I want a 30 for 30 on one day.
I'm not sure it is an overreaction to react to (1) I'm glad Jones got that contract. (2) I'm surprised Belichick is still out there. (3) I expect the team to be better.
He should have demurred on the first point (for obvious reasons - he should know the impression he's given off, Mr. Magoo). And if you combine points (2) and (3), there is one obvious prediction.
I - Last year he got hurt
N - When he was playing we weren't blocking anybody
G - We got some weapons around him
O - Let's give him a chance
How can you feel confident with this guy as the CEO?

John Mara’s nephew Tim McDonnell, who is the Giants’ director of personnel, was shown in Hard Knocks as a prominent figure in the front office. Mara bristled when asked about what McDonnell brings to his role.
“His talent evaluation skills, his work ethic and the respect that he has, not only in our building, but around the league,” Mara said. “Sometimes I get tired of reading he’s only there because he’s my nephew. You go and check with people around the league, you see what kind of respect he has a personnel executive.”

John, we aren’t fucking idiots. He’s only where he is because he’s The Nephew. Don’t insult our intelligence.

Can we trade him to another team's front office for a pick?

For a person who pays such close attention to fan feelings and reactions, he has almost no media savvy at all.

Yeah. Dabs better win in 24 or BB is here to fix Jones.
In other words, he still agrees with Schoen's decision.
;)
Between this, and the front office having to constantly walk Mara through the draft and FA strategy in depth as we saw during Hard Knocks, it's seems clear that Mara is directly involved in the day to day player/football side of the business.
Teams might've been able to get away with this sort of thing 10-20 years ago, but the league is a lot smarter now and having to constantly placate someone like Mara looks like a competitive disadvantage.

I’m sure another owner would say they are unhappy with the contract?
The Belichick comment was the most/only interesting thing he said.

His “he doesn’t only have his job because he’s my nephew" T-shirt has people asking a lot of questions already answered by his shirt.
I’d put good $ on him being our head coach in six months or so.

That is a very defensive answer by John. I hope that didn't give him palpitations.
We need a reporter to actually check around the league to fact check this claim.

Well no matter he says you will have the same response..

Tim is S.T.D.
Smart. Tough. Dependable.
But for a CEO who has overseen the worst team in the conference over the last 10 years, a little self awareness and a little less defensiveness would be welcome.

It would be a very on-brand move for Mara. Looking backwards for answers.
Continuing to say that DJ is still on scholarship and putting all of the pressure on his teammates and the coaching staff, even referring fondly to Bill Belichick, just sucks the positive energy out of the locker room at precisely the wrong moment for this team.
Hey John - please do yourself and this franchise a favor and stop speaking to the media!
This.
Seems to get more embarrassing as the years go by.
Ugh.
It’s the nonstop excuse making like Jones’ is a child that is tiresome.
Nowhere in that clip was any criticism of Jones’ play - just criticism of everyone else’s play. It has to be increasingly frustrating to be another player on the team and constantly getting thrown under the bus while one guy and one guy only gets coddled.
Of course I expect guys like JMS and Evan Neal to get similar treatment from John, in that they’re given 6 years to finally do something of value….

I didn't give a response. He said the same things he's been saying for a couple years.
My response is he is telling us what he thinks of Jones. We should start believing him.

But yet he gave his blessing to trade for his replacement
I’d argue that is more important than what was said in a press conference
He would never be that bold.
But he could say, "Look, we like Daniel and the work he's put in to get ready for this season. But it's season six and we just need to see more quality..."

Indeed.
Do you think McVey and Snead have to do this dance with the Rams owner?
I doubt it.
And yet he was ok with trading to replace him
Quote:
Saying he is happy with Daniel's contract and continuing to excuse his horrific record of performance by blaming everybody else is just beyond ridiculous at this point. The right comment from a competent owner is "We expect Daniel to live up to the contract that was given to him. There are no more excuses this year. It is time to perform at a level commensurate with the percentage of our salary cap that he will be occupying in 2024. A level that requires him to put this team on his back, elevate the players around him and carry this team to a successful year."
He would never be that bold.
But he could say, "Look, we like Daniel and the work he's put in to get ready for this season. But it's season six and we just need to see more quality..."
Of course, you are right. I was just projecting my inner George Steinbrenner. But the idea that he is excusing DJ by throwing his teammates and the coaches under the bus could not be more nauseating at this point.

He doesn’t regret the contract but we need Daniel to be better.

But he also said he wasn’t totally comfortable with it’s the cost. It’s more likely hes trying to seem impartial.

Who cares if he was comfortable with the cost
Bottom line….he gave the blessing to replace him…
That is what matters
Not what he said in a press conference
Quote:
He’s never even saying anything close to that. Mara loves the kid, for reasons I’ll never understand. But it’s pretty apparent every time he opens his mouth on the subject that Mara regards him with son status.
And yet he was ok with trading to replace him
Well, he wasn’t exactly totally gung ho about it and I’m sure Joe picked up that vibe too.
I don’t think it’s a stretch to say that John really, really likes Jones.
You saw it throughout Hard Knocks.
I just re-watched four of the first five episodes for the BBI podcast tonight. When you re-watch and turn captions on (you have to because Mara mumbles at times), it's not good. I will highlight the relevant parts tonight.

Blessing to look, it never got to a point where he had to give his ok on an actual deal, so we don’t know if he actually would have went through with it.

I think Mara loves the Giants more than any person alive. I also think he’s the biggest impediment to this team winning.
