John Mara spoke for the first time since March after the mural unveiling at Hackensack University Medical Center. He hit on a bunch of topics, including:
• Mara wouldn’t give specific expectations for the season but said “obviously I want to show significant improvement.”
• Mara on Daniel Jones: “I’m still happy we gave him that contract.” Wants to see Jones with a better O-line and weapons.
• Mara said he was “very surprised” Bill Belichick didn’t get a HC job this offseason. Mara believes the 72-year-old can still coach at a high level.
What has Jones ever done to warrant such affection? Does he call John 'Mr. Mara' & that's all John needs?
If we suck this year-which I fully expect-I can't wait for another coach-probably BB-to be tasked to fixing Jones come year seven.
& if Jones never even amounts to much, I'm sure he'll be in the Giants ROH because Johnny loves him so much.

if you combine these comments with what we saw in Hard Knocks, it's not absurd or a "conspiracy theory" to suggest that Mara has to be managed.
You saw it throughout Hard Knocks.
I just re-watched four of the first five episodes for the BBI podcast tonight. When you re-watch and turn captions on (you have to because Mara mumbles at times), it's not good. I will highlight the relevant parts tonight.
I think Mara loves the Giants more than any person alive. I also think he’s the biggest impediment to this team winning.
+1 SFGF
I know we make fun of Chris Mara because he spends so much time at the race track. However, I wish he would take John with him.
But his seeming endless affinity for Jones is something I want a 30 for 30 on one day.
You answered your your own question, then took it back... LOL

I get it. Owners talk. And I know he isn’t going to publicly piss on Jones.

Mara is an awful owner. You disagree?

There's still a solid minority of Giants fans, both on and off this board, who love Daniel Jones, think he never had a chance, would have been/could be good, etc. It's not just the owner. (Although I wish the owner weren't part of that group.)
Daniel Jones is not the problem with the Giants. The problem is, and has been, the way John Mara runs the organization.
- He bungled the new stadium
- He bungled the handling of the three best assets he was lucky enough to inherit: Reese, Coughlin, and Manning
- He populated the organization with family members and general mistakes
This organization has lost its way, completely and utterly.
I want less of him as well but he is the owner okay one of them.
Continuing to say that DJ is still on scholarship and putting all of the pressure on his teammates and the coaching staff, even referring fondly to Bill Belichick, just sucks the positive energy out of the locker room at precisely the wrong moment for this team.
Hey John - please do yourself and this franchise a favor and stop speaking to the media!
You claim he runs the team, yet don't want any insight from him. I guess maybe it's because once he speaks on a thing like, we did this for XYZ reason" then the haters can't continue to make up their own reasons, it's easier to call him a liar & maintain whatever stance they have on whatever issue, which seems kinda lazy to me.
Some of you really need to take a step back a notice the difference between someone we are stuck with and someone that knows the anything about leadership.
Yes we are stuck the Mara’s and we’d all like them to be competent. But overwhelming evidence says they are not.
You can downplay that all you want but those are the facts. No one can change that they are in control but we certainly do not have to pretend they are doing a good job when they very clearly aren’t.
Just. Stop.

Mara just loves Jones. Loves him. I can never recall anything like this in my life. It is beyond mystifying. And frustrating AF. HE ISN'T A GOOD QB!

John Mara is on a whole different level than the woulda/coulda/shoulda people. As a rookie Jones did flash certain things which regressed completely under Judge. Seeing Mac Jones react similarly does lend credence to that. The difference is the woulda/coulda/shoulda people realize that Jones has not been that and, when combined with his injury history, should never have been offered the contract he was. The woulda/coulda/shoulda people would not prevent the drafting of a QB even once during Jones’s tenure.
I think if the season is a disaster we'll see a Belichick & Cousins pairing. Go defense in the first round and you'll have a 3-4 year window to win with Belichick.
Again, this is only if Vegas ends up being correct about the team.
But what Mara is - mealy-mouthed, passive-aggressive, craves influence, shirks accountability- is an epic disaster. The "you have full autonomy, XYZ looks pretty good to me, I just want it to work, but be careful about XYZ" is so bad. Cowardly, ineffective, morale sucking.

Not sure Atlanta can trade him so soon. Maybe you’re thinking Dak?
The nephew would do it but he's too busy with all the offers he's getting from other teams.

A cousins trade after the season saves the Falcons $2.5 million according to overthecap

John Mara’s nephew Tim McDonnell, who is the Giants’ director of personnel, was shown in Hard Knocks as a prominent figure in the front office. Mara bristled when asked about what McDonnell brings to his role.
“His talent evaluation skills, his work ethic and the respect that he has, not only in our building, but around the league,” Mara said. “Sometimes I get tired of reading he’s only there because he’s my nephew. You go and check with people around the league, you see what kind of respect he has a personnel executive.”
Can we trade him to another team's front office for a pick?
The notion that Mara thinks someone would go up to him and say "John, your nephew is a buffoon and the only reason he has a job is because he is a part owner and your nephew.," might be peak Mara. I have no idea if he is respected or not around the league, but Mara vouching for him is absurd. I can imagine every person sees an owner and says "Wow, John your nephew is amazing." Most would recognize that people are being nice, but Mara wants us to fall for these niceties as well. I can't!
And his answer will be:
"Yes. The problems in 2024 were due to Daboll, the OL and the poor performance of our running game due to Schoen's incompetency in letting Barkley go to the Super Bowl Champion Eagles. Now that we have removed Schoen and Daboll and hired Bill Belichick as our new GM/HC, I am very happy that we have now extended DJ's contract for another decade so we will finally have enough time under the right conditions to prove to the world that we made a very smart draft pick back in 2019!"
And he’ll make some excuse for Jones.
I’ve never seen anything like this as a Giants fan. It is beyond ridiculous and bizarre.
He'll run it back with Jones as the starter but unlike previous coaches, he'll actively go for another QB in the draft.
If he comes, it'll be at the expense of Daboll's job and Schoen's power.
Reminding the GM about Barkley's popularity......
literally at the last possible minute.
He wasn't smart enough to realize Saquon was about to deliver an FU waiting for the Giants to get real.
Mara should also check his sources for the Bears Rumor.
