Who would you rather have in their prime?
Unfortunate neither could grasp the team first concept… both had the physical abilities to be all time greats but the fire that helped make them excel also hindered their careers.
I was recently watching Shockey Highlights and he was an absolute beast! I think the transition from Fassel to Coughlin coupled with Eli was the end of Shockey in NY. Instead of grasping the concept of discipline and change, working within the system he became demonstrative.
Odell was dynamic and explosive! Both were game disrupters and changers but I think Beckham was the bigger problem. Eli and Coughlin were established at that point and proven winners the Giants weren’t that far removed from 2 SBs yet he couldn’t maintain a professional environment and was disrespectful to his coach and team by his actions.
Shockey changed our 2002 team and without much at all at WR (outside of Toomer at the end of the season) he still produced very big games.
Odell in his prime is a top 5 receiver in the NFL.
I mean, The Catch is the perfect summation of Beckhams time here. Holy sweet Moses, it was amazing. But what did it amount to? No one remembers that we lost that game, that it was during a 6 or 7 game losing streak, and that it eliminated us from the division crown. Whole lotta sizzle but not much steak.

But the biggest Odell strength was also the biggest Shockey weakness. Odell was able to make acrobatic and tough catches while extending his arms and then he'd be able to transition from the point of the catch into accelerating quicker than any player I've seen possibly ever. That's why he took so many of those slants to the house.
It was basically impossible for Shockey to make a semi-difficult extended arms grab and stay on his feet. He was almost physically incapable of doing so and left so many yards on the field due to this.

Ehhhh, I dont know if thats true. Both of them could've been better to their QB. Both showed him up, Beckham in spectacular fashion.
Beckham from 14-16 was an absolute freak. A meteoric rise. Too bad it only lasted 3 full seasons. 18 he was still nasty but the bloom was falling off the rose at this point and by 19 he was a mere mortal. Shockey for me.
Bottom line is people forget how consistent those NYG teams were with Shockey here. We made the playoffs 4-6 seasons with Shockey starting here. We never do that. Shockey had a hand in the most consistent NYG offense and team ever, save for 84-90.
So far the best is 2024 catch:

Shockey sure was a talent, and it’s a bummer he didn’t have a longer prime. Most definitely one of my top 5 Favorite players ever
I’ll always care about NYG until I die, shoot, I still check BBI daily(have been since he was playing), but the losses are easier to brush off currently. I’ll stay mad after a loss for 10 min instead of 10 hours as a kid 😆
With that said, vintage Shocks was a bigger deal to me than OBJ ever was. Again, age is a factor, but #80 was such a badass dude. Didn’t last long, but it sure was fun to watch Eli and Shockey. You may guess from my handle… but that handle was created back in those days.
I take OBJ in todays NFL, but Shockey is 1b
1) I believe his best year stats wise was '02, his rookie year.
2) Still not over him dropping that TD on 1/5/03 that would have put us up 41-14 (pending XP obviously that would have made it 42-14) on 1/5/03 vs. SF.
3) I don't think we win it all in '07 if he doesn't get injured. Obviously a superior talent to Boss, but just my take.
His first three years here were brilliant.

He was Canton bound if injuries didn't derail his career.

Beckham was the most talented player I had ever seen in an NYG uniform.

His ability to get in and out of breaks and hit top speed in a short space was astonishing.
He may be the most talented WR - physically - I have ever seen.

Terrell Owens and Calvin Johnson and what they did at their size are my top 2.
I’ll take OBJ in this instance but would definitely not complain having a healthy Shockey.
However, if you even need to think about this, you're blind. Odell before his injuries and maybe a little ego, was on track for all time. I still think he had the most impressive rookie and 2nd year at the position in history.
I guess you missed out on Victor Cruz
David Wilson

The Giant who kills me in terms of 'What could have been?' except for injuries is Nicks. I'm convinced that if his body didn't betray him, he had ended up in Canton. Just go back @ look at his '11 postseason. He was a fucking beast. In '12, he has that monster game vs. Tampa Week 2, but got injured in the process.
David Wilson
Wilson stunk. He had one good game and somehow a myth was created. It was a terrible draft pick.

Nicks was absolutely a better football player
Still can’t believe this TD against the Redskins. Just insane skill level.
