As the Giants prepare to kick off joint practices with the Lions, it's a good time for a depth chart check-in. Here's how I see the offense:
From Albert Breer who was at Lions camp a couple days ago:
•I was at a scrimmage-heavy practice, and one thing that really stood out is that this Lions team knows how to practice. It sounds like a simple thing, but any NFL coach will tell you how important it is. Yes, the morning session was physical. Yes, there were big hits. And the key, to me, was seeing a few where you’d think a fight was about to break out. That never happened, and I think it’s a real credit to what’s been built in Detroit. Great vibes here, as you’d expect. I’d be surprised if the team isn’t better than it was in 2023. Lions Salty - ( New Window )
Is that it throws a wrench in the BBI narrative that — if nothing else —
the Giants would just recreate the right side of da Raiders line with Van Roten at RG and Eluemunor at RT.
I don’t believe in voodoo spells but something nasty has permeated this Giants O-line for over a decade.
if Thursday game will be on ESPN or something else I might get down here in Eagle country ? Doing our week with grandkids in Brigantine....
I will be in AC. Only live New York local on Fox. You have to go to tuckerton (bars) who carry New York stations. NFL channel will replay full game 11 pm thursday, and friday at 5 am and 3 pm. I hope this helps.

As the Giants prepare to kick off joint practices with the Lions, it's a good time for a depth chart check-in. Here's how I see the offense:
Heavy involvement from this year's draft class early. Love to see that. Hopefully it translates to success for them and the team this season. Johnson, Nabers and Philips in starting posts. Tracy and Nubin right there.
Would not be surprised to see we were outclassed today
Defensive scheme. Would not surprise me if we are overmatched. That said, these are growing/learning opportunities for those players. I think we are starting to build a nice foundation here, but we now have to continue to build and develop.
It's also useful to the Giants coaches in evaluating our young players

Brian Daboll meets both the #Giants and #Lions media before joint practices today. Same injury report except Bryce Ford-Wheaton is back and D.J. Davidson (lower leg) will do a “bit” more
Dan Duggan
@DDuggan21
No changes to the injury report except WR Bryce Ford-Wheaton (knee) will return to practice. Giants only have four healthy tight ends, but Daboll said that won’t impact their practice plans.
Daboll said Greg Van Roten will continue to work exclusively at center with John Michael-Schmitz missing his seventh straight practice. Daboll said Van Roten eventually will get guard reps and he thinks the center reps will be beneficial.

becoming an issue? didn't see that very much with wink
Typical of a brand new defense.
Not only that, but fewer man assignments means more communication and playing off of each other, passing off coverages, etc. If folks haven't learned yet they ought to brace themselves, early pass D likely to be ugly. That's not even considering a unit likely to be led by a 2nd year CB and rookie safety.

From what I've seen on here and seen on Twitter it sure seems like the Giants outperformed the Lions. Can anybody confirm that?
I know it's just practice and we aren't seeing every play, but DJ seems like he isn't thinking as much this summer as he has in years past. Just dropping back and letting it rip. Also Nabers, Hyatt & Wan'Dale have looked really good.
Look at those 3 WRs and look at who we started the year off with last year at WR. We had Hodgins, Slayton, Parris Campbell & Sterling Shepard.

The three big negatives were two blown coverages, and almost pick 6. Everything else seems mostly positive.

Sounded pretty even to me, Giants did well but blew some coverages leading to big plays.
that as long as Jones plays even average, this team will be decent. Today did nothing to dissuade me from that notion. Secondary remains the biggest concern.
This team is underrated. Maybe they should be and there are big questions but it’s far better talent than most expect.

There is…not sure many teams have added 2 better players than Nabers and Burns this off-season…
Throughout the entire roster, there is a lot of new blood and these guys are bringing some edge. 5, possibly 6 new starters on offense if Theo ends up replacing Belli. Plus Tracy will have a big role it appears as RB2.
The defense was already solid last year, and they add Burns who is a force multiplier on that DL. Also liking what I’ve seen from Phillips at nickel, Johnson at ILB, and Banks/Thibs both should be even better this year. The only notable loss was X, but Nubin should help mitigate that as I think he’s going to be a good player.

A couple thoughts from #Giants practice ...
– I covered my first training camp practice in 2014. There isn’t one that comes to mind that was as energetic, intense or physical as Monday’s. Even the stars were out for the day: Tom Coughlin, Michael Strahan, Victor Cruz and others. They and a good number of fans saw the two teams go at it for over two hours. It wasn’t just the fights (and there were many). Every play felt like a battle between guys who don’t like each other very much. It was legitimately fun to watch and a stark difference from the first practice a year ago where the Lions wiped the floor with New York. Considering what the Lions accomplished last year, and where the Giants appear to be in their rebuild, I expected more of the same. Seriously: Not the case at all. The Giants were in no way outclassed Monday. I felt they
– Nabers continues to just look so good. He really is a special talent. Aside from his on-field explosiveness, you heard the Giants praise his “dog” mentality at various points in Hard Knocks. Some scouts (other teams) were worried about that. Not head coach Brian Daboll – he wanted it. You got a little glimpse of that on Monday. Nabers, after that long catch, ran up the Lions sideline and stared down the defenders over there. Jones threw to Nabers eight times on Monday. The result? Eight completions.

That’s notable considering he rushed Penei Sewell most of the day. Burns, after practice, credited himself with at least “two to three” tackles for a loss.

Slot CB may be more important in this system.
That may be true, but I hate to have the weakest link of the defense being an outside corner.
Flott is a backup, McCloud is decent but an upgrade would be nice.

No.
Why is Flott a backup?
This.
Also, "random vet CB that is available 8/5" has no business starting.
Stephon Gilmore would compete to start.
Also, Flott has not shown the ability to start on the outside in his two years with the Giants. He's young and may develop further but he doesn't look to be the answer this year. It's not all or nothing, if you bring in a better outside corner it doesn't mean Flott never plays or doesn't continue to develop. That thinking is flawed.

Confirms what I've been saying for weeks and back to last year...he's too long and not quick enough vs smaller, quicker WRs. Nor is it clear that Flott was in on the EZ bust. It's early, and he may pick it up, but there was a reason Schoen and def staff groaned when CBs came off the board.

Great job OL, especially Eluemunor ….i knew you just have to be our starting RT, and you proved it today.
Great job, Malik Nabers. I was not disappointed when we selected you over one of the other QBs because I know your talent is very very special. You will make any QB look better, including Jones, Lock, or Cutlets.
Great job Dru Phillips. I love your attitude and fight. You don’t play like a rookie.
Great job Mr Burns. Getting you was such a blessing….it is great to have a pass rushing super star on our team.
Great job Theo Johnson….you just look the part. Stay healthy please…..

RE: It just seems like a wasted day if they had to stop
They got twice the work done that they normally do, and they had a practice to PHYSICALLY get them ready for the opener - something they clearly were not ready for last year.
It was a good day.
However, they need to follow this up with another good day.
that I get roped right back into to hoping that it's all changed!

Last year, after that preseason game where it looked like Jones to Waller looked formidable, this place was tripping over itself with excitement.
And then the real football started...
In recent years many coaches have said they get a better look out of joint practices than pre-season. Really hope this team can exhibit a physical identity when the games count.

Just looking at my notes: Rookie WR Malik Nabers was targeted eight times at Monday's joint-practice against the Lions. He caught all eight passes (although it was debatable whether one was inbounds).

In Bowen Defense.. Nickels have to be able to play the run, be physical and solid tacklers.. Dru Phillips fits that mold better than Flott.

#Giants rookie CB Dru Phillips on his rep vs #Lions' Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jameson Williams' reaction and the ensuing fight: “I mean, it was a really good rep by me. So I kind of expect him to get mad. I mean, I’m a rookie. So I think I just did my job well and maybe he didn’t like it. But at the end of the day we’re just out there competing. So I expected it.”
This is great to hear! Can he be the edge corner opposite Banks?
__________
Phillips plays like Darnay Holmes was supposed to play but without the holding penalties.
from a practice attendee, re-enforces my core thesis about Flott on the boundary (and, no, we're not even going to broach him at slot, for the same basic factors in his build and movement challenges he faces on the boundary): have said, since last year, and nothing that has transpired at camp so far moves me off the basic premises:
- takes too long to get to max speed, in part bec of his length--he's a 440 guy not a 100m or 200m guy
- his length also impedes him from staying with quicker, esp. smaller WRs, reactions are a few beats behind
- not a talented or fearless tackler
this is from X's @KSIXI, who watches a ton of NYG football, and I know he has his detractors here, but his eyes are seeing the same as mine

From my vantage point, I saw mostly NYG D vs DET O.
It was pretty evenly matched. NYG DL I think overall had a better day than their OL but definitely some struggles in the secondary.
Flott just can't hang, man. He just can't. Thought Simmons on the 2nd team played well.

Not sure we have the boundary corner opposite Banks on this roster yet...
prolly right, TMike, and again, from HK, why Bowen, Dabes et al. were apoplectic when the 2nd round didn't fall their way, got Nubin as a (not bad) consolation prize at another DB position of need. Barring a late FA vet signing, not sure how JS handicaps the logjam of wannabe CB#2, other than imo the impossible to cut McCloud, or maybe they Hail Mary Holmes, but he doesn't have the top end. Not sure if he is/would be as grabby outside. Hard to hide that
RE: RE: RE: RE: RE: Why the hell is the QB running into a fight scrum

Disagree with this. Don’t see them bringing in a vet. It’s Flott’s job now and McCloud is still a possibility. He’s had a good camp. A stopgap vet is counterproductive. Just kicks the can down the road and you have the same problem next year. Find out what you have now.

Come on man...let me have this...
Give us until Oct 1..then we'll deal with being out of the playoff race and discussing tanking for a QB.
Waller pulled a hammy and wasn’t the same player we saw in training camp. Sounds like Theo and Hyatt are looking good, Nabers is looking fantastic and Wan’Dale is healthy, which he wasn’t at the start of last year. Hope this gets your excitement back!

Flott's not the answer. Maybe Christian Holmes is the guy!
Two neck injuries and a torn ACL would agree with you. It doesn't matter how much your teammates respect you and have a laugh with you getting into a scrum when you're on the sideline with the trainers instead of throwing the football.
There's a reason no coach wants his QB getting hit in practice and why they wear those red jerseys. There's a reason why Daboll went nuclear when he was *almost* hit today. It's because if he goes down injured, the season is done and the odds are already against the Giants this year enough.

Yes and no. Detroit won the first day, the Giants won the second day.

As the Giants prepare to kick off joint practices with the Lions, it's a good time for a depth chart check-in. Here's how I see the offense:
• QB: Jones/Lock/DeVito.
• RB: Singletary/Tracy/Gray/Miller/Corbin/Saylors
• WR: Nabers/W. Robinson/Hyatt/Slayton/Hodgins/McKenzie/Olszewski/A. Robinson/Boykin/Houston/Ford-Wheaton/Asante/Jiles
• TE: Johnson/Bellinger/Manhertz/Cager/Stoll/Jackson
• LT: Thomas/Ezeudu/Cajuste
• LG: Runyan/Kubas/McKethan
• C: Schmitz/Van Roten/Schlottmann/Morrissey
• RG: Stinnie/Mayfield/Johnson
• RT: Eluemunor/Miles/Nelson
And here's the defense:
• DL: Lawrence/Nunez-Roches/Anderson/Chatman/Riley/Horne/Davidson/Phillips/Rogers
• OLB: Burns/Thibodeaux/Ojulari/Basham/Fox/Whitley/Oghoufo
• ILB: Okereke/McFadden/Johnson/Coughlin/Muasau/Beavers/Adams
• CB: Banks/Flott/Hawkins/Holmes/Long/Borders/Hayes/Goodrich
• Slot CB: Phillips/Simmons/McCloud/Herndon
• S: Pinnock/Belton/Nubin/Riley/Owens/Johnson
•I was at a scrimmage-heavy practice, and one thing that really stood out is that this Lions team knows how to practice. It sounds like a simple thing, but any NFL coach will tell you how important it is. Yes, the morning session was physical. Yes, there were big hits. And the key, to me, was seeing a few where you’d think a fight was about to break out. That never happened, and I think it’s a real credit to what’s been built in Detroit. Great vibes here, as you’d expect. I’d be surprised if the team isn’t better than it was in 2023.
Lions Salty - ( New Window )
the Giants would just recreate the right side of da Raiders line with Van Roten at RG and Eluemunor at RT.
I don’t believe in voodoo spells but something nasty has permeated this Giants O-line for over a decade.
They seem to be stockpiling talent now.
I will be in AC. Only live New York local on Fox. You have to go to tuckerton (bars) who carry New York stations. NFL channel will replay full game 11 pm thursday, and friday at 5 am and 3 pm. I hope this helps.

Not only that, but fewer man assignments means more communication and playing off of each other, passing off coverages, etc. If folks haven't learned yet they ought to brace themselves, early pass D likely to be ugly. That's not even considering a unit likely to be led by a 2nd year CB and rookie safety.

@DDuggan21
Joint practices move so fast with action on two fields, so I’ll have to huddle with
@charlottecrrll
about the Giants’ defense and review my notes on the Giants’ offense. But my first takeaway walking off the field is that the Giants brought the fight today. That wasn’t the case a year ago. Looked like a much tougher team.

This team is underrated. Maybe they should be and there are big questions but it’s far better talent than most expect.

I had Daniel Jones 12 of 17 in #Giants practice today (full team period) and 7 of 8 in the 7-on-7 period. Thought he looked good. Only blemish being a near INT when Carlton Davis jumped a curl. The highlight was the long pass to Malik Nabers.

I know it's just practice and we aren't seeing every play, but DJ seems like he isn't thinking as much this summer as he has in years past. Just dropping back and letting it rip. Also Nabers, Hyatt & Wan'Dale have looked really good.

As Eric said yesterday, this is a developing team. You don’t develop your talent by putting young players on the bench for stopgap vets. Flott has upside and may get pushed by McCloud. That’s what you want at this point.
There were a couple of times Banks let a guy go and was expecting safety help and it never came.

Good stuff on Eluemunor versus Hutchinson.

Slot CB may be more important in this system.

As far as what the Giants may want to clean up vs Lions on Day 2: a few busted coverages in the back seven and the second-team run defense. Otherwise, a solid day overall, and better than that in the red zone.

We need one of these corners to pop. Last year at camp there was a lot of positive vibes about Hawkins. Maybe Phillips can be the real deal...

I know - he was drafted as a slot/nickel corner. But if he is blanketing St Brown, can he play outside and move Flott back to slot where Flott is probably better suited?
@Connor_J_Hughes
– WFAN’s
@ShaunMorash
and
@tommylugauer
(stars as bright as Strahan & Cruz) were in attendance. They were over with the Giants defense while I watched the offense. Morash said Brian Burns lived in the Lions' backfield. That’s notable considering he rushed Penei Sewell most of the day. Burns, after practice, credited himself with at least “two to three” tackles for a loss.

That may be true, but I hate to have the weakest link of the defense being an outside corner.

Flott is a backup, McCloud is decent but an upgrade would be nice.
With a few good options available, why not sign one to a 1 year contract.

He was a steal in the third round. Jeremiah had a higher grade on him than Nubin!

I love it here haha
Both in the way he looks and the way he moves, I am seeing a lot of Kareem McKenzie in him!

What One year rental that is still available do you think is going to come in here and lock down a position?? Just let the young guys develop and take their lumps and learn.

Giants-Lions Joint Practice 1 thoughts...
•Flott got burnt by Jameson Williams early & later Jamo was alone in the endzone on what must have been a busted coverage
Nabers looks like he’s going to be a big problem for defenses.

It's total catnip.
Last year, after that preseason game where it looked like Jones to Waller looked formidable, this place was tripping over itself with excitement.
And then the real football started...
The real test begins September 8th.
Great job today Daniel Jones….keep it up and I will be back in your fan club, even paying back dues
Great job Mr Okereke….what a great trade Schoen made getting you to NY…you were the man last year and you never even missed one play. Keep it up and be safe.
I can go on, but I will stop there.
Great job to all our coaches and GM…..I BELIEVE!

Amen! #LFGNYG!
They got twice the work done that they normally do, and they had a practice to PHYSICALLY get them ready for the opener - something they clearly were not ready for last year.
It was a good day.
However, they need to follow this up with another good day.

Just looking at my notes: Rookie WR Malik Nabers was targeted eight times at Monday's joint-practice against the Lions. He caught all eight passes (although it was debatable whether one was inbounds).

That catch was inbounds.

In Bowen Defense.. Nickels have to be able to play the run, be physical and solid tacklers.. Dru Phillips fits that mold better than Flott.

Yes, it's wise. The Lions practice like this all the time. Get ready to play NFL football games.

Phillips plays like Darnay Holmes was supposed to play but without the holding penalties.

@KSIXI

But maybe he should.
Disagree with this. Don’t see them bringing in a vet. It’s Flott’s job now and McCloud is still a possibility. He’s had a good camp. A stopgap vet is counterproductive. Just kicks the can down the road and you have the same problem next year. Find out what you have now.

Eric, I'm thinking of the physical toll it takes by playing almost 3 games in a row. Regular season gets 1 game a week. The body needs time to heal.

Can't say I disagree. Three days in a row of game conditions may be tough.
But maybe he should.
