The Lions first team offense scored 3 times yesterday and the Giants first team offense did not score yesterday .
I also thought the Lions ran pretty well against our first team defense.
If that's true, it's not overlooked per se; everyone expects the D to take some time to gel, and the young guys to settle in. And be the strength of the team. With normal injury luck the D will be solid to very good. The O - and OL in particular -- is the worry. Hence the excitement over its performance yesterday.
Daboll said TE Chris Manhertz, who left late in yesterday’s practice, is fine. WR Dennis Houston (hand) won’t practice today. CB Christian Holmes, who they claimed yesterday, has to get something “looked at,” per Daboll.
No changes to the rest of the injury report. Eighth straight practice C John Michael Schmitz (shoulder) will miss.
Not surprisingly, Daboll and Dan Campbell were fine with the “spirited” nature of yesterday’s practice. They spoke after and said they just want to see some of the “extra” stuff get cleaned up so practice doesn’t get interrupted as much as yesterday.

Really Giants are doing these with a team like the Lions and a coach like Campbell.
Thats the most concerning thing. Now we have to do this dumb cross training crap.
You do realize that all teams have OL play multiple positions. You only dress 8 on game day.
What is different this year is Ezeudu isn't learning three positions(as were others). The IOL is staying IOL. Which is fine.
And it is not a crazy as last year, either.
Anybody that thought JMS was going to join this melee is nuts. They want that shoulder healed and not lingering.

Exactly. People are conflating the root of last years shit show. The issue was inexperienced and in many cases marginally talented players -- yet to prove they can play in the NFL at any position -- practicing at multiple spots.

A new day today. No fights so far. And #Lions 1st team defense with at least 3 would-be sacks thru first two periods vs #Giants top offense
Connor Hughes
@Connor_J_Hughes
A rough first series for the #Giants starters against #Lions defense in full team. Daniel Jones & Co. ran five plays — first of day after 7-on-7.
- Obvious sack (play continued to a dropped INT). No one obviously beat. Entire pocket collapsed.
- TFL & holding
- Jones completed an out to Malik Nabers (he’s so good)
- Obvious sack. Levi Onwuzurike
- TFL
Connor Hughes
@Connor_J_Hughes
Malik Nabers really is absurd. A day after the rookie went 8/8 (receptions to targets), he starts today 6/6. He caught four in 7-on-7 and now two to start team drills. It’s not just that #NYG targeting him. He catches everything.
Not just #Giants secondary. #Lions can’t cover him either.

Obviously different teams entirely but we seem to be developing some serious star power here now but at the same time still a team with some holes. OL has good players and holes even if guys come back and that’s no given. D has studs all over the front 7 and banks can play, but there will be sore spots there too.
It’s too early and I promised myself I wouldn’t get sucked into the good ship lolipop hype train this summer no matter how good burns and nabers looked in camp. But I can’t help it. I just really believe this team goes as far as those two. If we somehow added two elite impact players, identity forming players in one offseason were on out to respectability. You win with star power in the NFL.
Exactly what I said is going to happen. This is a playmaker system, Jones is not going to look average, he will look as good as Tua did with Hill and Waddle. You cannot cover Nabers, the same way you cannot cover Hill. You will watch this play out in camp and preseason games. You people that think Jones cannot play are wrong. He can throw the type of passes needed to make this go. Wandale and Hyatt are going to break. These 3 receivers dominated to SEC, this is not about JOnes. Daboll has his pieces..

I think this tells you a few things a) Nabers has a chance to be special. The type of player the giants haven’t had. B ) Jones might not be the “Bum” that people claim he is. For the type of numbers he has to be accurate, c) the OL seem to be better but there still is work to do. D) our secondary other than Banks (sucks).

DL the least likely as we have in house competition.
4th Edge without boogie becomes more important, but simmons can fill in.
CB2 still glaring hole.
swing T and interior OL/C remain a concern.
They may find a swing tackle but that’s very unlikely. The 4th edge is as big an issue with Boogie as without him. And between Flott and McCloud we’ll be fine at CB #2. We certainly aren’t getting one from someone else’s scrap heap.

It's Flott's job to lose....
McCloud has always been the fallback
McCloud may be viwed as having a limited ceiling, so if he beats out Flott, then I wouldn't be shocked if a cost effective vet is brought in.
That said, I still think the vets price tag will be too high and the Giants still want to roll with what they have.

The 2022 team was pretty lucky, so this doesn't mean Giants are going back to the playoffs (much less the divisional round) but I think this is going to be a competitive team in the 8-10 win range. Thinking that the "over" 6.5 wins is a solid wager.

Not sure on McCloud. Beats have said he played well when given a chance. You are probably right on limited ceiling and Giants view Flott as having higher ceiling, hence they are willing to let him get beat up during camp to gain outside reps.

The 2022 team was pretty lucky, so this doesn't mean Giants are going back to the playoffs (much less the divisional round) but I think this is going to be a competitive team in the 8-10 win range. Thinking that the "over" 6.5 wins is a solid wager.
Also should help that while the secondary is going to give up some big plays and frustrate, the better DLine and better coaching (Wink was a hack) is going to result in the D getting it's share of turnovers and stops.

There were another handful of smaller scrapeups (less animated that Day 1), specifically late in the session, which was shortened by 15 mins after a KOR flareup
That's the end of the roster scrapping to make it.
already said they won't play their starters. We're not likely to do so either.
The game will probably be pretty boring compared to these two practices.
It was a good week.
Agreed it was a good week but I hope we don't hear complaining about not getting enough preseason reps if things don't go well early. (and we know we will)
Team is young and still developing. Them standing up to a superbowl contender says a ton. Also having your QB take on a DT and skill players not back down sets an example of leadership about not being pushed around.

Was about to say the same thing. In 2022, they had to get Hodgins off the Bills' PS just to get someone to throw too. And the OLine was just bad.

Day 2: #Lions-#Giants100 : NYG OL won the individual line drill and held up in 11 on 11: Jones a good day, found Nabers plenty; Lions won the red zone drills; overall, NYG won the day.
This is Dottino, right? Reads as encouraging, and I hope it is, but Paul is the quintessential company man…

Joint practices are better than preseason games now. And the Giants have two this year.
The starters play in the joint practices, not so much in the preseason.
While I don't want anyone getting hurt, I LOVE the fact that this team is standing up and fighting the Lions. Maybe the loser mentality is starting to go away.

Embarrassing lack of discipline from both teams at the end of today, after both coaches said they wanted to see less of it. Basically had to cut the last period of practice short because of guys on both sides throwing punches, #Lions running over to #Giants sideline. Khalil Dorsey and Kayvon Thibodeaux exchange late blows
Pat Leonard with the keen eye....is it me or does his tone make you feel like smacking him in the back of the head?
Don't think there's every been a Giants writer that I'd love to smack more in the front of the head than Pat. Can't stand the guy.
Pat’s always been a cunt.
Just as bad when he covered the Rangers. Old videos of John Tortorella talking shit to him after dumb questions are a fun occasional guilty pleasure
People need to go back and look who was starting on that 2022 defense too.
I don’t know if it’s coincidence or a reflection of the makeup of the team (including coaches) but both 22 and 23 seasons seemed to be season long continuations of their respective game 1’s.
Hopefully this week is a confidence booster that carries into a winnable game against the Vikings.

Giants-Lions Joint Practice 2 thoughts
•Malik Nabers balled out again and then started fighting. Great day for him.
•Nick McCloud had a good practice and then took CB2 reps over Flott for the first time
•Brian Burns had an excellent joint session and blitzes were getting home from other guys
•Kerby Joseph was punched a lot
•Another fun year of camp, thank you guys for supporting
It's Flott's job to lose....
McCloud has always been the fallback
McCloud may be viwed as having a limited ceiling, so if he beats out Flott, then I wouldn't be shocked if a cost effective vet is brought in.
That said, I still think the vets price tag will be too high and the Giants still want to roll with what they have.

Two clips of big playes by Lions, I noticed #3 making up a lot of ground to make tackles. Had to lood up number, and that's Tae Banks. Don't know if he was making up for someone else's mistakes or those were on him.
After a great comment by Nabers yesterday about how DJ should stay out of fights so he doesn't get hurt, he himself made some stupid decisions today throwing punches at helmets. We don't need him breaking a finger.
With Feliciano at C and Glowinski playing decent right guard his first year and Thomas being healthy for 17 games it held up fairly well.
Last year JMS was not ready week 1 Thomas gets hurt and for some reason I'll never understand we move Erzudu to left tackle after he played guard all spring and get Jones killed. We went from 49 sacks allowed to 85 in 2023
days are a sign of a team that isn't going to be pushed around by the top teams of the NFL anymore, especially the Cowboys and Eagles. Adding Nabers and Burns can be the catalyst. Already looking forward to the joint practice with the Jets.

That 2022 line was bad, there is no sugar coating it. The best you can say is that it wasn't as much of a shitshow as 2023.
"The Giants' offensive line finished with a Pro Football Focus Pass Blocking Efficiency of 82.8, 26th in the league. That's worse than the 2021 ranking of 83.5, which was 23rd in the league. The Giants also allowed 212 total pressures in 2022, up from the 190 allowed the year prior."

Too many unknowns at secondary to believe that for me. Pass rush has to stand on its head for this to work.
Any previous DJ camp....looks great in camp and does not carry forward to the season.
Exhibit 1-A to support your claim.
Preseason game 2 last year versus Carolina, opening drive.
People went to great lengths last year to explain away their poor performance vs. the Lions in the joint practice.
We won't know anything about this team until the regular season begins. But at least the OL isn't getting destroyed in a joint practice. Plus, we have a WR who has the makings of the other stud WRs from LSU in the league currently (Chase and Jefferson), and we have a legit top NFL pass rusher in Burns wreaking havoc on a good OL.

JMS was not bad to start the season. He looked extremely competent. He never recovered from the injury and appeared lost after it, too. More Bobby Johnson getting in the way, I believe.

I often think that people make incorrect snap judgments of players - before they even play a game.
But I also think that some guys are just so good, you can see it immediately.
I think Nabers is one of those guys.

@Connor_J_Hughes
Not sure I agree with this. I really like our safeties. Banks and Phillips look like the real deal. Aren't we really talking about one question mark?

The pass rush will need to chip in to help the secondary. Banks and Pinnock are good. Belton/Nubin are question marks. McCloud and Flott are big question marks.
That's why they should sign a vet CB. It would be a huge help and solidify the secondary.

It would be super impressive to complete 17 of 18 in 1:1s against your own dudes. Shit, it would be good if they were just playing catch by themselves.
Stephon Gilmore. He played for $5M in 2022, $7M in 2024( I know this doesn't include any bonus money) . I think you can sign him on a one year $4-5M deal with incentives. You may need to trade Slayton to fit the salary but the team would be better.
We looked a lot better than we did last year in joint practices with Detroit and that is with Detroit returning their coordinators whereas we have an entirely new D and some changes on O.

I was talking about 2 plays. I don't remember if one was a run. And I didn't say either was on Banks, I said I didn't know who was responsible, just that Banks did a lot of catching up on both. He may have made 2 great plays getting to guys who weren't his to cover.

GMs are going to wait until after opening day to sign expensive vested vets unless their hands are forced.
Gilmore is 34 years old. That's OK for kickers and punters and maybe even QBs and an occasional lineman. CBs don't age well.

If 2nd CB is too much a weak link, we should fill it?
Flott, McCloud, Hawkins.....???
I love all the young guys are getting meaningful reps. Obviously I’d love to see JMS, Neal, Theo, and Nubin healthy and getting the same quality reps as the rest but I digress…
I know I’m captain obvious but the defense and secondary are going to struggle for a while getting used to a new system and all the young guys playing but again it will only get better in the long run. I would like to sign a vet if possible. (Gilmore, Howard) especially if Flott really struggles. I don’t care about growing pains, but if he’s not showing any progress he might be better in a backup role.
Obviously the OL is always a concern so I’ll always search the waiver wire/FA to get better and deeper. Donovan Smith? Conner when he gets healthy and passes his physical?
Barring injuries, if we can shore up CB2, add another vet OL especially swing T, edge #4 and a 3 tech DT, I’ll be extremely happy.
I’m not predicting playoffs or anything like that but I feel like this team will be fun to watch. 2021,2023 were literally unwatchable. This team there’s a lot of guys I can’t wait to watch once the season starts

I don't get the feeling they are going to ditch Ezeudu to bring in someone's castoff at tackle. Giants will likely carry nine OLs. Much depends on if Neal is on the 53. They can't IR before the season or he's out for the year. They can PUP him.

Got the chance to watch every one on one rep between the Giants first team offensive line and the Lions defensive line today.
What’s funny is that in years past, all I would hear about watching the Giants OL was how the defensive players had such a huge advantage in one on ones.
I didn’t see that advantage today. I guess that’s what happens when you actually have the makings of a good offensive line.

I hate keeping stats in training camp. Hate it.
But sometimes the stats can provide solid context. The numbers from Malik Nabers are just ridiculous the past two days.
Daniel Jones was 7-of-10 in 11-on-11 drills. Looked like he would've been sacked twice early on in muddied pockets. He also broke off a long scramble. One TD pass to Nabers, which if you have not seen yet, check out my video on the timeline for the extra special commentary that preceded the play.

If this Oline somehow ranks in the top 15 this year they better give Carmen Bricillo an airtight long term extension. I can handle mediocre football, but awful bottom of the league OL is just too demoralizing to stomach after the past decade.
something to consider with CB2. Last year we were most a man team on D with a lot of blitzing. That required real strong cover CBs. This year, we'll be mostly zone so our CBs should expect to get more help from the safeties, and our crop of safeties is pretty good. Belton and Nubin are especially good at finding the football. So maybe our group of CBs are good enough for this system. I would expect that with time and familiarity most of the communication failures that have been resulting in scores will go away.
Watch out.
The reactions to single practices around here.
I said this before any practices a number of times. Exactly how I said it will happen is how it will happen. It will not surprise you. It ISN’T going to happen because Jones is great. It will happen because a playmaker system like this is just perfect for a QB like Jones. He is actually accurate, unlike Lock(ask Christian).
NABERS is a nightmare.
You need a nightmare.
This should work much better than most of you admit(I kinda think you know, it is why you seem mad)
The critics of Jones will have nothing to apologize for. Jones has not delivered on #6. This is going to work though, enjoy it.

Nabers certainly sounds like a nightmare. The trouble is, Jones is also a nightmare, but the wrong kind of nightmare.
Pray for injury free day.
(1) Coming off a terrible season vs complacency from an unexpected playoff appearance?
(2) Coach Brian Daboll changed his mental approach to managing the team?
(3) Uber-talented imports like Brian Burns & Malik Nabers have everyone jazzed?
(4) All of the above?
(5) Something else?

I think you may be wrong on the Giants. As far as the Lions, yes blown coverages with 3 of 4 new starting DBs will kill you.
Anyway, none of the reports seemed to think the Lions did that well yesterday.
I also thought the Lions ran pretty well against our first team defense.
Lions playing in the same defense.. Giants learning new defense with at least 2 new starters in the secondary.. Thats why you practice..
From the clips I saw and the reports the Giants were able to get deep on the Lions multiple times
Keep working.. Keep learning.. Thats what these practices are for.
Not this morning, for thursday, maybe, but there might be a break thursday in between storms
The fact our offense executed reasonably well is great too, but that deserves the “it’s practice, and a the Lions didn’t game plan on defense” caveat
Hence the excitement over its performance yesterday.
the Front 7 gave arguably the best OL in the NFL trouble.
Blown coverage is better than not being able to cover

Not to mention the D is learning an entirely new defense.
The play of the OL is the most encouraging sign from yesterday. No doubt the Lions will be very fired up today.
No changes to the rest of the injury report. Eighth straight practice C John Michael Schmitz (shoulder) will miss.
Really Giants are doing these with a team like the Lions and a coach like Campbell.
I guess..maybe..It's not so dumb.

@Connor_J_Hughes
- TFL
Detroit defense starting much better today
@Connor_J_Hughes

Good. Competition at an unsettled spot.

I am much more bullish on the Giants defense than offense. I believe the key is going to be the young guys at IDL developing and keeping their heads above water. Because the pass rush is going to be very effective.

Have to play the young guys. Team has to see who develops and who will not.
Yes pass rush will help coverup flaws somewhat. Whole secondary needs to learn No doubt they will get fried a few times. As long as they improve.

Another fight. #Lions rookie Morice Norris who had a play #Giants thought was dirty just threw a few punches at Gunner Olszewski’s helmet and got sent off
@Connor_J_Hughes

They may find a swing tackle but that’s very unlikely. The 4th edge is as big an issue with Boogie as without him. And between Flott and McCloud we’ll be fine at CB #2. We certainly aren’t getting one from someone else’s scrap heap.
This game on Thursday night could be littered with personal

McCloud may be viwed as having a limited ceiling, so if he beats out Flott, then I wouldn't be shocked if a cost effective vet is brought in.

A vet CB is always a chance, but I don't think the Giants are looking at it that way.

Also should help that while the secondary is going to give up some big plays and frustrate, the better DLine and better coaching (Wink was a hack) is going to result in the D getting it's share of turnovers and stops.

Disagree with that. We'll see where we go but the Giants O hasn't looked great in over a decade, including camp and pre.
Last year beats were wetting themselves over the offense with Waller and then we had that one preseason drive…

We sure as hell didn't look good in joint practices against the Lions last year.
After a great comment by Nabers yesterday about how DJ should stay out of fights so he doesn't get hurt, he himself made some stupid decisions today throwing punches at helmets. We don't need him breaking a finger.
Last year JMS was not ready week 1 Thomas gets hurt and for some reason I'll never understand we move Erzudu to left tackle after he played guard all spring and get Jones killed. We went from 49 sacks allowed to 85 in 2023

Nope, you are correct. We convinced ourselves that “bouncing back on day 2” erased getting our ass handed to us on day 1.
I gotta admit this feels different but I’m heavily guarded these days.

Exhibit 1-A to support your claim.
Preseason game 2 last year versus Carolina, opening drive.

The Giants also allowed 212 total pressures in 2022, up from the 190 allowed the year prior."

team than the 2023 team. Maybe even some more upside given how Nabers looks.
The 2022 team was pretty lucky, so this doesn't mean Giants are going back to the playoffs (much less the divisional round) but I think this is going to be a competitive team in the 8-10 win range. Thinking that the "over" 6.5 wins is a solid wager.
These WRs are WAY, WAY, WAY better than 2022.
The OL is better than 2022.
The defense is better than 2022.
Too many unknowns at secondary to believe that for me. Pass rush has to stand on its head for this to work.

I get it, I don't want to jinx anything either. But this is supposed to be entertainment so it's time to allow ourselves to be entertained.

Not sure I agree with this. I really like our safeties. Banks and Phillips look like the real deal. Aren't we really talking about one question mark?
You could say that about any of the players, you are right. Even Jones shoving the DT yesterday.
But - they came out with a bruised hand from yesterday on a guy not likely making the team.
Knockwood - an important outcome.

The pass rush will need to chip in to help the secondary. Banks and Pinnock are good. Belton/Nubin are question marks. McCloud and Flott are big question marks.
That's why they should sign a vet CB. It would be a huge help and solidify the secondary.

By my count, Malik Nabers was targeted 18 times in live drills during the two days of joint-practices against the Lions. He caught 17 of those passes from Daniel Jones.

And he and Chatman play different positions.

Lions kept their top DL in against Giants' backups.

Watch out.
The reactions to single practices around here.
NABERS is a nightmare.

This should work much better than most of you admit(I kinda think you know, it is why you seem mad)
The critics of Jones will have nothing to apologize for. Jones has not delivered on #6. This is going to work though, enjoy it.
