Do the Giants actually have some depth?

Jay7852 : 8/9/2024 9:58 am
Obviously not at cornerback, But it seems to me like we are much deeper than previous years. Isn’t wasn’t long ago when Darnay Holmes was basically our starting slot corner, he is probably 3 or 4th on depth chart now. Isaiah Hodgins Was basically our WR 1 or 2 a couple years ago, he is now 5th on the depth chart at best. Have 4 running backs that look capable. Safety room is loaded (Nubin, Pinnock, Belton, Owens, Jalen Mills, etc). Backup Oline actually looked good last night. Joshua Miles, Kubas, Mayfield looked solid.
TBD

Long way to go to make that statement. But encouraging.
That's the main takeaway from last night

And we may have CB depth. Outstanding CB depth actually. Even if CB2 is just a JAG+ he'll be backed up by lots of other JAG+s.
In spots, sure

But not at interior DL or at CB. And those are HUGE positions.
"some" depth for sure, but

this team is still one big injury away from going off the rails. If they lose Thomas or Dex or Thibodeaux or Burns or Banks or Jones there's no one who can really fill in. They're better than they've been in recent years, but there's a long way to go in roster building.

He was flying to the ball last night. Would be disappointed if he doenst make the team

Agreed. It looks better than in the last few years. But we don't know if the 2nd team was playing the other team's second string. We don't know what kind of schemes were being used.
But it was encouraging that they didn't look outclassed.
NBG- I don't think you understand "roster building"

ANY team that loses one of its "stars" or key players, will take a BIG performance hit.
Depth means, you have people to step in and do a relatively professional, competent job.
Their depth is looking better across the board and as the young players develop, can actually become solid.

What impressed me last night, were 2 things.
The scheme on defense looked much more coordinated last night so players could make plays.
The other was the overall play of the OL. Coaching makes a HUGE difference!!
Kubas, Mayfield, D Johnson

all had nice games.

Interior DL is a strength. Bowen said some good players aren't going to make the team, and last night showed why. Anderson looked great; Chatman was impressive. Basham can be an inside guy too.
Right now I'm most intrigued at CB

I don't get all the negative comments after they played a near flawless game in the secondary last night. Of course, it is only pre-season. But, all levels of the depth chart played well. I am certainly interested in seeing more of this group and seeing who gets cut and what the final depth chart is.
I came away really impressed
Breeze_94 : 8/9/2024 12:26 pm : link
With Tracy, Dontae Johnson, Chatman, Gray, and Turbo.

Chatman looks like he could be a diamond in the rough. He could develop into a good inside rusher, but he also holds his own vs the run
I don't want to make TOO much

off of one exhibition contest, but it certainly appears that way. The DB, OL and RB groups look much better than last year, and we know the WR group will too.
Funny you should mention depth

Last night the only game feed I could get was the Detroit feed. Of course it was Lions centric (as the Giants feed would be Giants centric). It was like the Lions were playing some faceless generic team, I think I heard them actually call a Giants player's name twice. I eventually had to mute it.

But one of the things they did talk about was how much depth the Lions had. How they had to find a place for all the young talent they had. They went on and on. To be fair they do have a lot of talent and depth. I just thought, must be nice. We had that once, back in the SB years and some day will again.

Are you talking about Dyontae Johnson?

Maybe if he keeps it up you might bother to learn his first OR last name!

And our depth outplayed their depth.

I watched that feed too BTW. It was the worst broadcast I've seen. I don't think they had a Giants roster; they showed virtually no replays; they blathered on and on about meandering crap all game rather than actually announcing it, they put themselves on camera about 10x more than tyoical.

And Golden Tate is a HEINOUS color guy.
Like I’ve said, much better roster than advertised
BillT : 8/9/2024 1:25 pm : link
We have decent depth at RB, WR, TE, LB, edge, S. I’m not sure about the DL but the coach says we have depth there so DL as well. And the OL backups played well so that’s something. We’re got three years of roster building and it starting to come together.
I don’t think yesterday says much about the depth
ajr2456 : 8/9/2024 1:28 pm : link
It was backups vs backups. We don’t know yet if anyone of those backups would be capable against another teams starters
If you only listen to local (nyg) broadcast teams
djm : 8/9/2024 3:43 pm : link
You can nitpick and find issues but once you listen to just about any other team’s local coverage you appreciate how professional and even objective the nyg broadcast team is, at least when compared to others. That includes baseball and the winter sports.
Depth
Toth029 : 8/9/2024 10:42 pm : link
On the OL does -feel- better.

McKethan was 3rd string, to note, in this weekend's game, and he was forced to start last season against San Francisco. To put things in perspective how dire it was then.
