When does Neal come off PUP?

aquidneck : 8/10/2024 9:40 am
It it solely dependent on his health which might force the team to cut another player at cut-down time, or does the team wait until after the 53 is set giving them four weeks to to make a decision once the season is underway and either activate or IR him at that time?

Or do I have the whole thing wrong and the PUP rules work in some other way?
My understanding
Eric from BBI : Admin : 8/10/2024 9:41 am : link
is he already counts against the 91, even while being on the PUP. Same with Jalen Mills.

He will come off when he's healthy enough to practice. The longer this goes, the more likely he begins the season on the other PUP.
If he's healthy before the 53 are due then he comes off.
robbieballs2003 : 8/10/2024 9:42 am : link
If he is not healthy before the 53 are due, then I think he has to stay on the PUP for at least a month into the season. Anyone on the PUP does not knock anyone off the 53 until that person is off the PUP.
Unfortunately my expectations for Neal are very low

for this season. I hope I am wrong….
don't worry

about Neal at this point. Worry about Schmitz.

I've given up on Neal. JMS is the one I'm focusing on.
Yep…shoulders are a big issue for centers

Hope for the best for Schmitz
Neal and Schmitz 2 high OL picks by Schoen .
I was excited we drafted them but my expectations have been lowered by injuries.
A trend for Giants OL unfortunately
He’s not going to start this year
BillT : 8/10/2024 9:50 am : link
That’s a certainty. He doesn’t even seem ready to be a backup. So, do you hope he lands on in season PUP so he doesn’t take up a spot and they can get him going before they have to make a decision on a roster spot.
If JMS doesn’t return to practice now
BillT : 8/10/2024 9:55 am : link
I think he’s not going to start at least for a while. Another difficult spot as far as setting the roster. ‘Effin injuries.
I bet Daboll would love to go back in time

Which in the end means absolutely nothing. Neal may never play another down in the NFL or he may finally get healthy and do what we hoped he'd do. JMS, again, what we "focus" on means nothing. He'll ether develop or he won't...

PUP - Physically Unable to Perform. In 2 years, in the limited time he was fully healthy, Neal has shown he is physically unable to perform playing tackle at an NFL level.

His feet are too slow and he too easily can be made off balance. I seriously doubt that ever changes.

One year from now, he's either playing guard for the Giants or maybe he's on another team, having been traded for a 6th or 7th round pick on a team that thinks they can "fix him".

It matter?
I suspect the ankle has been and still is a lot worse
mfsd : 8/10/2024 11:23 am : link
than they've revealed. He tried to play through it last year and barely could. At this point I wouldn't be too surprised if he ends up on IR

The bummer with both Neal and JMS is we seem to finally have an OL coach who knows how to teach the job, and they're missing valuable development time

I'm not so sure. Falato said Neal was riding the bike on the sidelines really hard, like he was in a race.

I think they want his ankles 110% - stronger than they were - before he starts stressing it with his 350 pounds, cause when he does come back it's his last best shot.
I
AcidTest : 8/10/2024 11:57 am : link
don't think he does. I think he'll transition to the regular season PUP so they can save the roster spot and because he's not ready. He'll then have more time to heal and hopefully be able to start playing sometime in the middle of the season.

I agree that JMS is the one we need to worry about right now. He's missing a lot of time and shoulder injuries tend to be chronic. They are particularly worrisome for OL because they get hit in the shoulder on every play.

Slightly off topic but I think Ferentz may be more important to JMS’ development than Carm.

Agreed, even if he comes back next week, which isn’t happening, he would be unlikely to hold a starting spot. When he comes back, he can be the swing OT, and maybe get reps at OG in practice.

Fair point.
I think Neal is done as a Giant unless
Rudy5757 : 8/10/2024 6:18 pm : link
There is an injury. Barring injury I think the best we can hope for is he is the swing tackle. He’s been on the shelf for 8 months or more and he wasn’t good when he was playing.

He needs to be developed. They need to work with him and he can’t work because he is injured.

JMS is an issue with the shoulder. The good news is that it seems like we have a decent alternative if needed.
This MD lowered my expectations
David B. : 8/11/2024 9:36 am : link
Yes, he's not Neal's actual MD, but he describes what Neal's going through in the general sense. If the MD's even close to being correct, Neal has a ways to go.

I'm not ready to write the guy off yet. He's only 24, athletically talented, he wants it, and works his ass off. For a team that, still carries A. Robinson -- who never plays -- on the payroll, I'm sure they will give Neal whatever time he needs.

For a team looking to get two early wins before the schedule gets tough, I actually think having Neal out early this season forces Daboll to stop dicking around with the linemen. It stops Daboll from forcing Neal at ORT, playing other guys out of position, and it puts Eluemunor at ORT -- where he should be. That's a good thing for the TEAM in the short term.

Eric's correct. Right now, they need JMS back more than Neal.

Putting Eluemunor at ORT gives the Giants a chance to get off to a faster start by playing the "best 5 guys," hopefully in their best/correct positions.

It also take the pressure off Neal. Out of site, out of mind. His only job now is to rehab his ankle. Once he gets healthy, he can resume his career, and hopefully become what they drafted him to be. There isn't any urgency for him to rush back at the moment.
