Ugh... Dyontae Johnson "week to week" with ankle sprain

@JordanRaanan

LB Dyontae Johnson is considered week to week with an ankle sprain. A tough blow. He’s made a strong impression in training camp + preseason.

The undrafted rookie out of Toledo has received some first-team reps this summer. Had a sack and key third-down tackle vs. Lions.

*****

The post-game injury reports were wildly optimistic.

that should be associated with this kid is the wrap he should be kept in until week 1. He’s a keeper. Quite possibly the best rookie find since Jesse Armstead, whom, older fans will recall, almost didn’t make the final cut.

Even I don't remember that about Armstead... holy crap, imagine if they had cut him!

I do remember when they drafted the "little" linebacker coming off a serious injury (I think it was an ACL).

How to tell us you don’t know what you’re watching without actually saying you don’t know what you’re watching. Might be time to move on to another sport.

If we needed any more proof to never pay attention to Dan again, this is it. On the bubble?

In fairness to Dan, an undrafted rookie missing time isn't great for his odds on making the final 53. Johnson looked great vs. Detroit & has impressed in practice, but it isn't ludicrous to think he gets cut.
I think Daboll had Johnson

Give the post-game locker room “speech” (Giants on three….)
Point being - they will likely give him some more chances than another UFA
Hope it’s not a lingering ankle. If it were a starter, they would just rest him til fully healed.

For the team and the young man, but ultimately, I think he stays. I feel like his arrow was pointing up throughout the summer with Bowen and his style of defense. Curious to see who steps in next beside Okereke.

If it's really week to week
HBart : 8/10/2024 10:22 am : link
It's not the worst thing if he's healthy by the Jets game - more snaps for Massau and Beavers.

Otherwise. SUCK.

That said, on balance across the team, after a real game you can't expect much better injury news that a couple week to weeks.
Remember the IR rule changed this year
DavidinBMNY : 8/10/2024 10:25 am : link
I believe up to 3 players can be put on IR at cut down and still be eligble to be activaed, and that doesn't include players on PUP.

I thought he was the best player on Defense, so i hope they find a way to keep him around. It's a long season.

Dan Duggan
@DDuggan21
Have gotten a bunch of tweets like this about Johnson (well, actually not like this, the others haven’t been unnecessarily hostile). Let’s break down the LB situation:

Bobby Okereke and Micah McFadden are locked in as the starters. They gave Matthew Adams $967K guaranteed and he’s a lock due to special teams. They gave Carter Coughlin $367K guaranteed and he’s another proven core ST player. They drafted Darius Muasau in the sixth round, so that’s obviously a boost to his stock and he’s been a starting core ST in camp.

Johnson has looked good in camp while getting 1’s reps with McFadden/Coughlin missing time and looked great against backups vs. Detroit. But if he misses a week or two, he’s absolutely not a lock.

The Giants gave Bobby McCain guaranteed money last year too and they ended up cutting him during the season.

I get what Duggan is getting at, but at some point, talent has to win out.

Lighten up Francis.
A week or two shouldn't make much of a difference.
robbieballs2003 : 8/10/2024 10:30 am : link
If he is out longer with a high ankle sprain and they like him, they can short term IR him. Yes, he'll count against the 53 but after that they can bring another player back. It's just another option. This would be for like a 6+ week injury.
Why is McFadden a “lock”?
Mike in NY : 8/10/2024 10:33 am : link
Okereke is the only true LB that should be safe. It is not like Bowen’s scheme involves a lot of ILB’s especially if we are using nickel/dime a lot and you have people like Simmons who offer versatility.

I sincerely doubt this guy is "on the bubble." I have no doubt he makes the team.

Let's just hope that the Giants' trainers actually diagnosed it correctly.
I honestly don't think it matters that they gave minimal amounts of

it matters is a roundabout way which is that they didnt give him the money for no reason - there are things those guys do that they value. and sometimes its stuff thats not so obvious to us (like a specific role on ST or something like that).

if they think johnson is as good as he appeared the other day though and a legitimate competitor with mcfadden, it wont matter. he will make the team.

Agree with this. Adams or Coughlin, maybe but not both. On the other hand Muasau I think is more likely. 5 ILB isn’t out of the question.

I didn't know that. I thought the rule was still that if you went on IR before the season you couldn't play that year, unless it was for another team after being waived off of IR.
Between practice and his play v Detroit,

I think his roster spot is safe. This may hurt his effort to unseat Micah at the ILB spot. I think he was in that track prior to injury.
Methinks Dan’s opinion is…
5BowlsSoon : 8/10/2024 12:20 pm : link
…not Daboll and Bowen’s opinion…..and definitely not BBI’s opinion.

The other “DJ” is a BEAST IN THE MAKING!
I didn't realize the IR rule changed either,
KarenP : 8/10/2024 12:21 pm : link
but this is what I found:

In plain words, the new rule allows teams the ability to place two players on injured reserve at the roster cutdown deadline to return during the season. That has not been the case in the past with the NFL; if a player went on injured reserve before the active 53-man roster is set, he was out for the season.
Day-to-day would be relatively good news. Week-to-week not so good.
Ivan15 : 8/10/2024 12:39 pm : link
The next time the Giants have a season that is relatively injury free is the next time they go to the Super Bowl. Unfortunately.

Aren't high ankle sprains usually 4-6 weeks?

Obviously depends on severity though.

The way I read it, not having to put the two IR'd players on the initial 53 is the whole point:

Quote:
That [previous] rule led to awkward roster gymnastics, such as the Lions waiving RB Craig Reynolds at the deadline so they could carry an injured Julian Okwara onto the 53-man roster. Okwara was not injured enough to be out for the season, and the Lions wanted to be able to activate him at some point (which they did), but they had to have him on the initial 53-man roster for at least one day and then put him on I.R. to make that happen.

The new rule means the Lions can put one or two players on I.R. at the deadline and still be able to bring them back during the season without having to cut someone like Reynolds, who was waived knowing that he would be re-signed in a day (which he was).

His spot on the 53, but it will likely cost him his opportunity to start. He was making a push though I think they were likely starting McFadden anyway.

a bit of apples and oranges. Armistead would have been drafted much higher but for a knee injury at Miami.

PUP is not an option because he has practiced.

IR is now an option (under new rules, for up to two players) without having to put him on the initial 53. You can read up the thread for that.
FWIW, I thought Adams
section125 : 8/10/2024 3:31 pm : link
was bad in the Lions game. Johnson, IMV, was clearly better.
