It's something like that... I've never been able to remember what the rule is.
I found this on Big Blue View, credit the Russell Report:
“In the NFL, an injured player cannot be released. Often a team and player will reach an Injury Settlement in lieu of putting, or keeping, the player on IR for the rest of the season. Once an Injury Settlement is reached, the player is released. This is done when the player has a chance to recover from injury and play again in that season. However, if the player is still under contract for future seasons and the team wants to retain the player’s rights for the future, the team will not agree to an Injury Settlement and instead decide to continue to carry the player on Injured Reserve (IR).
An Injury Settlement is usually based on the amount of time that the team and player agree the player will be unable to play. So, for example, if the player is only expected to miss the first month of the season, the team and player will usually agree to a settlement of 4/17ths of the player’s scheduled base salary. The team then receives a Salary Cap credit of 13/17th of that salary. An Injury Settlement is attractive to both the team and player because it allows the team to create additional Salary Cap space and allows the player an opportunity to catch on with another team and not have to sit out the entire season on IR.
If a player is released with an Injury Settlement, he can not be re-signed by that team until after the term of the Injury Settlement (the number of weeks used to calculate the Injury Settlement), plus three (3) additional weeks.”

Daboll praised Tyrone Tracy pass-pro. “He’s smart , picked up schemes “
This is really important. Tracy looks like he is trending towards getting some major minutes this season. I know Daboll likes Singletary, but I could see a 50/50 type splitting of play as time goes on

LB Dyontae Johnson’s left foot/ankle is in a boot. Also I didn’t really see Evan Neal participate in the Giants’ OL/DL 2-on-2 stunt work just now, unless he did one early rep I didn’t see
Well that sucks, was thinking he might unseat McFadden. Hopefully it’s only a month or so and he’s back to start the year on specials / backup
Pat Leonard
@PLeonardNYDN
Evan Neal just took the field as 2nd team right tackle. He and Schmitz (1st team center) both took two snaps and off in their ramp up. Daniel Jones hit Darius Slayton deep over Deonte Banks on the 2nd play and on a slant to Jalin Hyatt. Dexter Lawrence had a PBU and a sack too
Turbo Miller actually took one rep with the 3rd team offense just now but lined up out wide and didn’t move. So looks like he’s resting out the hamstring but not doing much

It does suck, but again - worse things than a bubble player starting the season on IR. Even were Johsnon to shine these next 2 PS games I'd expect MM to start at least the first few games.
Indeed, were I Schoen, I'd be pretty ecstatic with relatively minor injuries allowing me to stash young depth.
All things considered the Giants have had a relatively healthy lead up to the season.
Hopefully Daboll has found the right balance of reps and rest.
One of the reporters noted that our projected starting OL hasn't played a single snap together yet because of injuries. And then there's Nabers, Cager, Nubin, Johnson, Dru, Lock, Flott. So while nothing catastrophic yet, far from injury free
The way I read it, Cager is unvested, and cannot be put on the IR directly during the pre season. He'd go on wavers, and if unclaimed the Giants could negotiate a settlement. And then re-sign him 3 weeks after the settlement length.
Alternatively, after that waiver period they could IR him, and he'd be ineligible to play in 2024.
My understanding is the settlement route is the best way to free up his roster spot, and create an opportunity for him to return this year.

Rookie RB Tyrone Tracy just went down untouched on a kickoff return. Cart is out and they are putting on an air cast.
Regardless of how anyone projects the results, I don't think Jones is getting enough credit for a downright remarkable recovery. He the extreme aggressive end of his return window with no real limitations yet.
Agreed.
Rooting for the dude. Put up or shut up.
I don’t understand the logic. At the end of 2022, Jones was playing genuinely well. The next season he was dreadful, even beyond the OL issues. Why would a decent 2024 convince anyone it had consequences for 2025?

It is literally not possible to separate 2022's QB play from the OL issues.
All things considered the Giants have had a relatively healthy lead up to the season.
Hopefully Daboll has found the right balance of reps and rest.

It's BAU. No matter what they do - musical chairs. Almost every day with a new starting OL. And, of course, Nabers is hurt now and may not play in the only preseason game DJ will. Just once, it would be nice to get good injury fortune.
On another note - is it odd that 3 interior OL have "shoulder" issues? Could it be having to block that monster Dexter Lawrence every day? I wonder.
It’s funny when a lineman measured at 308 LBs is labeled undersized. To me, it means the overall frame size is as important as weight. Andrew Thomas weighs in at 315 and looks big. More than just a 7 lb weight advantage. Kubas - ( New Window )
