I have a friend who is an avid Jets fan and was at the practice. He also played defensive line at Miami so I trust his opinion.
From his vantage point, he said it was difficult to make specific players evaluations. They do not make it easy for the fans.
He offered the following.
The practices between the lines were very competitive. He saw a lot of second-team snaps. Evan Neal stood out, because of his size. He said Evan did well in the reps he saw.
He was disappointed with the Jets rush, except for McDonald and Johnson. He could not tell, but they were rushing against the Giants' second-teamers.
He could not see the Giants defense vs. Jets line.
He said in the 11 vs. 11 the Giants had no rush against the Jets. But he felt that this was intentional. After the initial contact, the DL stood up and did not pursue the play. This allowed Rogers to break the containment rollout and make big plays. He also said that the initial coverage was there.
He also offered the intensity from the Jets was far greater. He thinks Saleh laid into them after a terrible practice yesterday. They were all into it and were ragging on the Giants.
Great info, this post could warrant starting a new thread just to highlight this POV.
I’m obviously not a believer in Jones and I’m not going to cry for him, but I can’t recall a QB getting dunked on as much as him from opposing players. But if he wants to have them STFU, prove it on the field.
You have a short memory. Eli was voted the most overrated player in the NFL by his peers (that's the players in case you didn't get that).
2 SB wins and 2 SB MVP awards was the ultimate STFU back to those players.
Two things that should be interesting. The former Oline Coach the way I understood it, taught the oline to play a more horizontal attacking scheme and our new oline coach wants his tackles to get more depth. Depth would seem to help Evan with his balance issues since he has more room to gauge and recover as apposed to playing more flat giving him less room for error if he falters. Should be interesting.
After two preseason games where the OL looks competent it should be fairly obvious how much the OL coach matters.
In spite of Brandon Brown's press conference, the Giants freeing up cap space seems very likely to be able to pounce on a vet CB cut prior to making another team's 53 man roster.
Less likely it's a trade, given Schoen seems much more interested in accumulating picks prior to the draft than trading them away.
I think there will be a point in the season where the players revolt against Jones and they are forced to bench him.
I absolutely guarantee a Makik Nabers sideline outburst by the Cowboys game, over the lack of targets or under thrown balls that would make Odell blush.

Yeah that was the first 4 seasons, that pretty much stopped after 2007. And there was that brief hubbub over “elite” at the start of 2011 and that was completely silenced by years end
given Schoen seems much more interested in accumulating picks prior to the draft than trading them away.
My memory may not be that reliable, but I remember Schoen trading up in the draft, down in the draft, picks for players… no trend suggests to me that he is interested in accumulating picks. Curious what you have seen to prompt that thought?
It is hard to evaluate Hyatt without context.
It does not sound as if the Giants were pushing the ball down the field.
Most of, if not all the passes were short and underneath.
If that is the case then you would not expect Hyatt to have any receptions. That is not his game.
It is premature to make any judgment on his play
I will make the same comment about the secondary. There is no pass rush per se.
We do not know the coverage. Were the Giants purposely testing Banks and the other corners to see if they could cover man to man?
It sounds as if the Giants were not giving help to the corners.
These practices are to experiment and test players in awkward situations.
I do think that the Jets took this more seriously than the Giants.I am basing this on Gardner's reaction.
Nabers will remember this and payback will be a bitch.
Really interesting post. Almost seems like they wanted to see how DBs respond to situations where the pass rush wasn't getting home.
RE: RE: the second CB spot is a problem. The Giants know it too.

Boogie ashamed and Isaiah Simmons would go against that theory.

There's also a bunch of new guys playing. The proof will be in Schmitz and Neal.
If we all agree the coaching at OL stunk i dont see why there shouldnt be hope for Neal.
Agree, but otoh, Sy said he had balance issues in college, so we might not be able to coach everything away. But if he can at least be better than Eleu, that would let us strengthen 2 positions with moving Elue back to G
The Neal stuff of late has been super encouraging. I don't want to get my hopes up, but I can't help it. If he can turn it around...(knocking feverishly on wood)
I think there will be a point in the season where the players revolt against Jones and they are forced to bench him.

I just hope he stops with the drops before he jumps on DJ, it'll have more credibility
Seems to be highly overrated on this board. The Jets have a solid secondary with two good corners. Hyatt is a work in progress at this point. It may click in for him, but he’s not there yet.
Did Jones even target him. How can we assess the WR if the QB can't get his head out of his ass?
Oh wait... we can't assess the WRs if the QB sucks, but if the o-line and receivers suck, we CAN assess DJ?

A balance issue is correctable. Means he is bending his waste vs squatting his ass down.

“He’s nice,” #Jets CB Sauce Gardner says of #Giants WR Malik Nabers.
Says he reminds him of Justin Jefferson, Ja’Marr Chase.
Sauce on Nabers - ( New Window )
Sauce wasn't smirking when discussing Nabers.
His comments were not waxing poetic about Neal's play. Neal was going against the Jets' second team.
He was more disappointed that the Jets could not do more.

Brian Burns had a nice practice. Had him down for 2 TFL’s, one sack and one possible.

The #Giants must find a corner to start opposite Deonte Banks or all those pass-rushing additions won’t mean a thing
