NFT: 100 Best TV episodes of all-time

Breaking Bad, “Ozymandias” (Season 5, Episode 14)

The power of dramatic television, fully realized. The medium’s biggest advantage over film is the sheer amount of time we get to spend with characters and their stories, episode after episode, year after year. Many of the episodes on this list hit as hard as they do because of how well we know the players and the conflicts by that point. None are as devastating, or as painstakingly set up, as “Ozymandias,” the hour in which every terrible thing Walter White (Bryan Cranston) has done over five-plus seasons finally blows up in his face.

I was going to flip if the 'The Contest' wasn't top 10. It came in @ 5...good.

"Count me in on this."
"You? You'll be out before we get the check."
Alias - 1st season, episodes 12 and 13 - Quentin Tarantino guest stars

Easily the best episode of that series, and it went where TV rarely did in those days.
As with most lists like this
Sky King : 9/2/2024 12:49 pm : link
A lot of Recency Bias. Should have segmented it in eras instead.
A lot of good ones there
Southern Man : 9/2/2024 1:27 pm : link
Agree with #1, what an EP. International Assassin at 3 surprising, but deserved. It's not the undisputed list, but fun scrolling through so many past favorites.
For Sopranos, I thought they were right to pick College
Mike from SI : 9/2/2024 1:33 pm : link
even though a lot of others could have qualified, including Whitecaps.

For Sunny, there are a million other episodes I would have picked.

Would have added a Rick and Morty episode, probably.
Haven’t gone through the whole thing
UConn4523 : 9/2/2024 2:19 pm : link
but “Teddy Perkins” being in the top 10 is really nice to see. For anyone that hasn’t seen Atlanta, you should and there are atleast a few episodes I can probably put in my top 100.
The episode listed for Deadwood (S1E12)
Bobby Humphrey's Earpad : 9/2/2024 2:42 pm : link
is such an amazing piece of television. Everyone doing what's best for the collective camp (Bullock as Sheriff) and for the individual (Al putting Reverend Smith out of his misery).

Man, Reverend Smith. Room still gets misty.
The Honeymooners should have the first 2 or 3
tommcd66 : 9/2/2024 3:03 pm : link
I love a lot of those shows, but come on man. Gleason didn’t even rehearse, all live TV.
I can’t help but look at lists, and then regret ever doing it.ugh
the turkey episode
Bill in UT : 9/2/2024 3:08 pm : link
on WKRP
The Newhart Show
Bill in UT : 9/2/2024 3:11 pm : link
the one in Vt. The episode when Tom Posten is recalling great folliage seasons and wishing in retrospect that he had used color film. Also the episode where he wakes up next to Suzanne Pleshette, his wife from his first series
sorry, I didn't click on the link,
Bill in UT : 9/2/2024 3:13 pm : link
but if my shows weren't mentioned, they should have been :)

Pine Barrens.

Episodes are hard for a series to pick it since the stories typically flow.

Pine Barrens just felt a little different like it was its own thing to an extent focused on Chris/Paulie. I don’t know if that’s my “favorite” episode or stretch of the show since it was so good. But it’s probably the most memorable individual episode from that show imo.

I can’t think of one “Wire” episode either. Maybe the Randy snitching storyline had some crazy stuff.

I agree that Pine Barrens is most memorable, and also agree it felt a little different, which is I guess part of the reason I thought College worked as representative.

Also for a lot of the episodes on that list, you need a pretty detailed understanding of the characters, story, etc. for the episode to have meaning. That is not necessarily a bad thing, just an observation. When I was rewatching Sopranos I happened to be up to College when a friend was staying over, and he was captivated without really knowing the plot. Again, I'm not saying that makes it better or worse, I just think it's an interesting thing to consider.

Like the GoT episode they picked is one of my favorites, but if you just dropped in on that episode, it would have little meaning to you. This is, obviously, a fundamental difference between tv series and movies.

Also, did they not pick any episodes from standalone/one-season tv series? It seems that way? I'm surprised nothing from True Detective season 1 made it.
Solid list at a glance
mfsd : 9/2/2024 4:26 pm : link
But IMO the season finale of season 3 of Sons of Anarchy has to be on there

Id agree that season 8 episode 2 of Game of Thrones was the best of the last 2 seasons, but I’d pick about 10 others from the first 4 seasons to be on the list over that one
My top 3 for twilight zone
Blue Baas : 9/2/2024 4:33 pm : link
Shatner on the airplane, Burgess Meredith breaks his glasses, and when they're snowed in at the cafe with the alien. Need at least one.
Some great
Pete in MD : 9/2/2024 4:45 pm : link
shows on the list. Many you can't pick just one episode of. I'm glad The Leftovers is on the list. I agree, not having one from True Detective season 1 is a crime (pun intended, although not really a pun.)

I digress, the ads make that website impossible for me to read. Is "The Haunting of Hill House" "Two Storms" on there?

Agree about the website, damn ads make scrolling aggravating

Didn’t see Haunting of Hill House on there, great show

episode of Six Feet Under. One of the very best episodes of TV ever should have been top 10 easily.

I was prepared to complain What We Do in the Shadows, “On the Run” wasn't included, but it is.

Out of all the great Game of Thrones episodes, and they pick

season 8 episode 2 to be on the list. Frankly GOT should have had numerous on the list, and that one isn't one of them
I checked the list . . .
3000_MilesToMeadowlands : 9/3/2024 10:20 am : link
not sure if it stated this in the intro, but there was 100 separate shows on the list. One episode per show only, but I agree that many great shows have a few great episodes.

One example here: #1 on this list "Ozymandias" & Breaking Bad "Dead Freight" - the one about the 1,000 gallon methylamine heist from the freight train in the middle of the desert.
List is incredible...
moze1021 : 9/3/2024 10:48 am : link
just for having The Leftovers International Assassin episode on there at #3.

Still my favorite TV Series of all time, and that episode is perfection.
OH man!!
moze1021 : 9/3/2024 10:50 am : link
AANNND... they picked Remedial Chaos Theory (also my fantasy team name) instead of A Fistful of Paintballs as the Community entrant which is often a populist pick. RCT is incredible.

With that at 15 and Teddy Perkins at 10...I'm very happy
I think also no Band of Brothers
Mike from SI : 9/3/2024 12:11 pm : link
so I assume they're not doing limited series, which is a somewhat odd choice, considering they did stuff like Black Mirror and Twilight Zone, which are awesome, but both series essentially are collections of one-off episodes with common themes.

I didn’t read through the full 100 but episode 8 of Watchmen needs to be on this list, preferably in the top 10 (if it did include miniseries’). “A God Walks Into a Bar” is one of the best hours of TV I’ve ever seen.

You're thinking of the modern twilight zone. There's over 150 in the original series over 5 years.
I am so glad that episode of the Simpsons was #2

Always been my favorite and brilliant TV imo. I didn't realize it was so well regarded outside of my mind lol.

I really loved this series. "A God Walks into a Bar" is absolutely great, but my favorite episode from that series was "This Extraordinary Being". That was one of the best epsidoes of TV I can remember watching.

As far as "Game of Thrones", the most memeroable episode for me was "Hardhome". Man, I just loved that episode. The last scene were Jon Snow is staring down the Night King after escaping gave me chills.

that one is great too as is I think it was the 3rd episode where we first me Jeremy Irons. I absolutely love Lindelofs work, between Lost, The Leftovers and Watchman you can argue he should take up 10% of this list.
Bear Season 2 Episode 6 - Fishes

Not sure where it should rank but it was incredibly compelling with great cameos. Eisen is discussing with Oliver Platt here.

It is a joke that this episode is not a top ten. If you haven't seen the series just watch this hour (its a flashback) of the most compelling TV in history. I didnt scroll through every show but The Bear was not listed as one of the shows.

"Forks" is the episode that sticks (no pun intended) with me.
