There were some very subtle hints at what he thinks of how some others conducted themselves vs how he and a number of his other teammates handles their business. Plus you get the sense of Giants pride that is just not as evident here today.
Yeah, that was pretty powerful. I worked on setting that up for quite a bit. (possible surprise visit- harder to do when you are recording and takes away from the actual guest)
It hit home for sure. I sent Leonard the actual letter later last night as he and his wife wanted to have the written piece to keep as it menat a great deal to them.
He was such an important part of those Ds and undersung
Agree that the presence of those LBs took away attention and understanding for how good he was, but to the sacks point alone above, it's also likely that QBs knew there was little escapability outside and that did create opportunities inside. But, Leonard still had to beat his man and DTs, which he did. Give the man his due!!
Niners were a balanced offense and it was the AFC teams who had the big passing teams. The NFC mostly dominated the AFC for a 15 year period with some great D's including the Giants.
What LM discussed about winning the down/distance battle is still true today. Not many teams can overcome being a poor running team.
what the rushing yards were in the second half of the Chiefs/Eagles SB (compare to the first half).
Then last years SB let me know what the Niners rypc was both as a team and CM individually compared to what they did for the season.
Then make your statement again Greg.
Very true. Yes points in the passing game are huge but if you can run when you need to or WANT to then you can control the game. That means stopping the run, when you need to, is also very important..
He says-& I'm paraphrasing-that is why Parcells benched him.
To be fair, parcells didn’t bench everyone after a holdout and he did have guys like Eric Dorsey and John Washington more than ready to start at (3/4) DE. I don’t want to hold the tuna’s feet to the fire but it sure looked like he held a little grudge there with Marshall. All I know is Marshall was a beast from 85-90 here and played his best in the biggest of moments. LT, Banks, Pepper (Carson) and Marshall were indispensable, up front.

100%, LT held out in 90 too. He showed up before the Eagles game week 1.
Loved listening to how much the Giants meant/mean to him. As an aside, did you offer for him to appear on camera? Would have loved to have 'seen' some of his reactions. Maybe he didn't want to, I suppose.

The idea was to be on camera but he chose not to turn on the cam. He had a lot going on that day so I didn't push the issue at all.
Leonard talking about the Craig fumble that was overturned...that was a bang bang play. Even three decades later, I have no idea what the right call was.
Hey SFGF - That Craig fumble wasn't an overturned call by the officials, right? That fumble was as clear as day and the officials never looked at it in the booth if I recall. Eric Howard knocked the ball out of Craig's hands with his helmet and it landed right into LT's hands. Never in dispute. (What could be disputable is my faulty memory - but I think I have that right)
this is what sticks in my mind.I also used to spend a lot of I also spent a lot of time at Pace during summer camp. It was quite a learning experience. The Giants defensive line coach at that time was Lamar Leachman. He had a drill that he worked with the linemen. He held a ball out in front of him, moved it to the left and right, and then dropped it it down. The linemen would drop on all fours, and still follow the ball back and forth. During the Montana play, Leonard got knocked down. If you watch the video, he sprints on all fours, rights himself, and then makes the hit on Montana. As I watched it develop live on TV, my mind wandered to those days at Pace. Because of all those repetitions during those summers, it had become automatic for Leonard. Great coaching, a great player...BOOM!
I have to tell you that Perry Williams is among my favorite Giants players ever. I would love to hear what Perry has been doing post-career and would look forward to an interview by you guys if/when you get him on your show.
Perry was fast, physical, and smart...everything we want out of our players.
As I said, a bang bang play. I have no idea. Link - ( New Window )
Thanks SFGF - I watched the Craig play right after you flagged it for me. I forgot how close that was to a fumble. Collins and Marshall converged and it came loose almost simultaneously to his knee hitting the ground. Great last 10 minutes of that game. The throw that Hostetler made to6 Baker to get them in field goal range was fantastic. Glad I got to watch it again.
it does mean a lot (speaking for both of us here) to hear that. We want to do these where they are legit interviews but we also want to maintain a real world- we are fans unlike many media folks who have less "connection" to the material.
One thing that holds us up with anyone out there is our ability to talk about players from the past, games from the past and just the times around the subject or guest we are speaking about or with. Phil Simms stated as much years ago to us as he stayed longer and longer because we knew what we were talking about and asked him good questions.

Attention to NYG history is one of the coolest aspects of bbi, especially Larry’s articles. As a youngster attending games at Giants Stadium we’d often interact tailgating with with older grey-haired gentlemen who’d talk about the Yale Bowl and old Yankee Stadium days. The Football Giants have always had a classic old New York aura, and I’m glad this site, and your podcast, touch on that history regularly.
for us fans that go back to that generation it is so meaningful to not only reminisce, but hear the stories behind the plays and moments. You both really are like a cortisone shot nailing directly at the type of stuff we'd love to ask if given he chance. You really brought out the best in Leonard. It really reminds me of the Big Blue travel road trips my brother and I took in the early 90's when we'd get to talk to guys like Karl Nelson and Lee Rouson and other former players at the Saturday night cocktail party. They'd be real candid and honest. Leonard not only was a great HOF level player and great Giant but a true class act. Thanks guys.
Leonard Marshall is one of my all-time favorites as a kid during the Parcells era.
While the Giants organization has not always treated him with the respect he deserves, I love it when Giants fans connect with him and show him how loved he is with the fanbase.
How did you determine to speak to Perry Williams? That clearly moved Leonard. I love his interviews because he provides enough honesty to shed some light on things, but just enough restraint to keep it clean or diplomatic.
It seems to me he's being penalized for playing with greats like LT, Carson, Banks, etc.
But didn't Hampton and McMichael play with Dent, Singletary, Marshall, Taylor, Plank, etc?

Right, that is exactly what wecare thinking too.
Thank you.

Damn.

The last five Super Bowl champions have ranked near the bottom of the league in rushing offense.

That us the exact wording I used with Eric. I was in high school then, 86 was fall of my senior year..Crazy to think about.

John has some really cool guests in the works too.

Howard was a Giant until 94. He wqs the starting NT after Burt left.
Yep aware. I meant Burt left in 89. Howard was more than ready to pick up the slack. I think he was even beter than Burt.
Howard made the biggest play of his life in this 90 NFC title game.
While the Giants organization has not always treated him with the respect he deserves, I love it when Giants fans connect with him and show him how loved he is with the fanbase.
I agree he should be in the HOF.
