And the candid responses, but man, Dottino hit on all my least favorite beats:
-Giants are a family run team, you don't know how much they truly CARE about winning (in a response to Mara's infamous quote about screwing Daniel Jones's career, not in reference to the actual team)
-Ungrateful fans do too much complaining
-Mean beat writers criticize the team too much (lol on this one, our beat writers are pretty tame)
-We were on track for a great season with 1st drive against the Cowboys trutherism
I understand this is Dottino being true to himself, but this illustrates why the team should always bring in outside voices on team management matters.
were good though. I'm less concerned about the CBs this year than others. Even the 2007 CBs were pretty underwhelming with a cooked Sam Madison, unproven Corey Webster, and rookie Aaron Ross.
says he understands the frustration of the fans for ten years of abysmal play, but then essentially complains about fans for not being more measured in their criticism.
So, which is it? After a decade, nothing really should be off-limits.
It's like those on this board who are tapped-out with the persistent Jones analysis. Well, he's been trying to play QB in the NFL for a half decade and we're entering attempt number six.
Seems like a realistic 'good' year for Jones even though he hasn't hit that passing TD number. As I've said in the other thread, we're probably going to know if there's any new leaf to be turned over with Jones by week 1 given the opposition and circumstances. Can't wait to see how this plays out.

"They weren't all in on Drake Maye...There was interest (in Maye), but to what degree..."
"If they were that desperate to get rid of Daniel Jones than no price was too high..."
Yeah this really stuck out. He literally called the pursuit of Maye as just "due diligence" multiple times. There are many posters on this board that would call you an idiot for suggesting that it was just "due diligence" and they were never that aggressive in pursuing an upgrade at QB, yet that is exactly what Dottino just said
Huh? Dottino said that NE was never serious about trading down except if the offer was off the charts. It was never gonna happen but that does not mean the Giants were not serious.

I think your interpretation is correct.
What I found interesting was Dottino longing for the days when beat writers acted like doctors and diagnosed what was wrong with the team and prescribed solutions rather than criticize. I'm thinking: isn't this the job of the people running the team?
If the Giants think their beat writers are bad, they'd self-immolate after 5 minutes in the Los Angeles Lakers market.
Daboll clearly can coach and should be the coach here for awhile IMO. He’s had two seasons as head coach, one which could be considered a smashing success and the other they won 6 games with a shit hand at QB, injuries, and one of the tougher schedules in the league. Year 3 id expect to see improvement from the coaching side but I’m honestly not worried about Daboll at all.
Schoen on the other hand has been a bit of a mixed bag. FA I think has been really solid to good. Drafts - decently solid but the whiff on Neal if he doesn’t improve is just very very bad considering that was a top 10 pick. He tried to move up for QB this year and it didn’t work. They were also very light on trenches for the 2024 draft which was a bit suspect to me, but the FA signings suggest they think they have enough depth there and needed secondary and WR more. The OL and WR talent is as high as it’s ever been since Jones has been the QB. With Daboll calling plays there is zero excuse for Jones to struggle. He needs a big year.
The 2024 doesn’t need to be a playoffs or bust type thing for this regime but clearly they need to show they can compete every single week and be in the playoff hunt down the stretch.
I’ll predict 9-8 and see how the playoff hunt shakes out, it might be enough to get them in.
Paul was very honest with assessment of the Saquon situation, more so than I expected. But Schoen's interest was clearly more than "due diligence." I pushed him a bit on this, but wasn't going to get a different answer.
Of course not. And, shocker, his defense of Mara's beloved QB is a surprise? bw laps that up because it confirms his mantra that Schoen was just bluffing.
Sure, I take a lot of what he says with a grain of salt due to his position. But he seems like a very decent man who catches a lot of un-deserved negativity from fans. But I guess that's just Internet 101 in the year of our lord 2024.
I have listened to all the podcasts you guys have done.
They are all a good listen. I find Dottino a hard listen, whether here or on Giants content. Most of his points lack depth or true insight. Schmelk is much better at what he does. Any time Dottino or Cross are a part of The Huddle Podcast I typically avoid it now.

I never characterized Schoen's interest as bluffing.
But his interest was much softer than many suggest.

I know Paul Dottino isn't everyone's cup of tea because he is an ultimate homer
Geeze, he's not even close to the Ultimate Homer. You guys should get out more, and hear some other teams' guys. I grew up in Boston hearing Johnny Most (Celtics) and Fred Cusick and Jack Adams (Bruins). Notorious, HORRID homers. Watch the away feed from LOTS of other teams games.
Dottio isn't 1/100th of that. He IS a 40+year Giants fan who knows his team and its history inside out. And he works for the company. His job isn't to speak like the average, BBI conspiracy theorist or throw players under the bus.
I get why people want to argue over it, but if you do want to argue this, understand that what you're saying is that you dont trust *Daboll* to identify QBs. Schoen isnt just making this decision on his own. He's relying heavily on the QB expert he handpicked as his coach.
I know folks feel that P Dottino is a shill, but he didn't come across that way to me.
I find it fascinating how the different "Daniel Jones camps" can hear different things about what Dottino said relative to the attempt to trade up for Maye.
I think if you want to find fault with Schoen relative to:
1) Not picking McCarthy, Nix or Penix either at 6th overall or with a trade down, that is a fair criticism.
2) Not offering Tyrod Taylor more money and / or selecting a different replacement for Taylor than Lock, that is fair.
However, I think the "Giants didn't trade up for Maye or Schoen wasn't serious" is one of those "we'll never really know" situations. From what I've gathered from Hard Knocks and other reports, the Giants would have likely had to offer the proverbial "King's Ransom", which would be in line with the reports of the 2024 1st, 2nd and 3rd and 2025 1st, 2nd and 3rd. In my opinion, none of the 2024 draft class quarterbacks, from what we knew then and know now would have been worth that amount of compensation.
I'm sure in a year or two or three, at least one of the first six 2024 QBs drafted will be a star / franchise QB and those with the "Schoen didn't do enough" again will say he should have made the 2024 1, 2 & 3 & 2025 1, 2 & 3 trade for "QB x" or should have picked "QB x" with the 6th overall pick.
Sitting here right now before the start of the season, those in the respective camps should go on record as to whether they would have given up those 6 picks, which QB they would have taken and if QB y vs QB x is the star and QB x is a bust, accept that they would have set the franchise back years with the trade for the wrong guy.

Coaches and GMs lie to you every day in press conferences. I have no reason to believe that an inside the building source is not simply toeing the company line. Paul has also been wrong plenty. Most recently when he said Adoree Jackson was bad last year because he mostly played in the slot. Thst simply isnt true and publicly available info about defensive alignment *from the NFL* shows it.
I was listening and getting annoyed with his take on fan's criticism and how the beats are supposed set the fans straight. Then I come on BBI and read how some thing JMS is a bust after his rookie year so I do understand that point of view. Unfortunately, I have nothing that says the insider and those in the building do not feel the same way about any criticism, even when legit.
'I would be shocked if the Giants don't have a top-10 defense by the end of the year.'
A nice, healthy dose of optimism, which we all need these days. A little too much Kool-aid drinking for me. Of course, all of these can happen, and I hope so. But to predict all of this will happen...
Good insights on what happened with Barkley. He also has a remarkable memory of players and stats. Who else knew that Richie James caught 57 passes in '22?
Overall, it was a good listen, and I appreciate you guys bringing him on the show.
i am not typically a dottino fan (i avoid his giants.com stuff) but i actually found him very enjoyable on this. he came across authentic and while i dont entirely agree with the lens he approaches covering the team with i think it's reasonable for someone who is an employee of the team.
id also say this time of year and this subject is where he has the most to add since he has been in the building all offseason and training camp. he's seeing a lot more than others.
this was my first inside bbi and i thought it was really well done. i think you guys collectively and correctly hit on the reasons for why the giants fan environment has turned as sour as it has. hopefully better times are indeed ahead. the point about daboll winning 6 games last year despite everything, and even to some extent that first drive against dallas that should have started the season on a whole different note, is a learning that i think we will see bear fruit on sunday. at home against a poor qb making his first start with a new team is a game a head coach needs to will his team to win. coughlin seemingly started 5-1 every year winning games like that.

It's not a question of whether I agree with him. The issue is that I don't trust him or believe him, he's just a shill for ownership
I don't disagree with Bill that Dottino is a shill for ownership, but it was still an interesting interview, and you guys are asking the right questions on behalf of BBI.
Dottino mentioned that Thibodeaux had a sprained MCL
for the first half of his rookie year. Too bad the guys didn't ask Dottino if he knew whether Neal has always been injured in one way or another his entire short Giants career. And if the answer is yes, is he healthy now?

We know Neal's injury history. We also know he's still recovering from offseason ankle surgery.
Dottino mentioning 'ungrateful fans' is not a dig at all fans. It is also not a dig at fans that critique the team. That comment is meant for the 'mob' (act first, think second; wanting their entitled pound of flesh). Every team has bad fans, the Giants included. You're not a bad fan if you question the team's decisions, you are not a bad fan if you critique the team. You're not a bad fan if you have lost faith in them. Bad fans never question the validity of their own opinions, bad fans never consider alternative or challenging point of views. Bad fans act before thinking as their default.

So when Neal did play, was he always playing hurt for one reason or another?
im not sure it's right to call dottino a shill - he's a team employee
his job is covering the team and in the interview he does a good job articulating why he covers it the way that he does. his job is not the same as an outside beat writers, which is why he gets more access. if we want someone to have more access from the team it's going to come with more strings attached. that is life.
my 2 cents are there are ways he could report a little more accurately with the access he gets that aren't negative or against what he's allowed to say from the access he's allowed. be it areas they are struggling or areas of weakness. i dont find him to be a shill as much as he is 1 note. he is always cheerleading. if aaron robinson were still on the roster this would be his year.
typically you have to take everything he says with a grain of salt but credit to the bbi show i thought he was a lot more candid and less 1 note than usual.

and bad fans lap up bad reporters who are mostly at this point clickbait launderers. the media today lives on clicks and negative narratives untethered to reality that they will pump as long as they can get 1 more click.
the florio example is this to a tee. engineered nonsense for fans looking for anything to validate how big sad they are and then pile hump it to death.

"When the team isn't doing well the media used to be like a doctor. They'd ask "what is it that's going wrong here" and try to identify possible solutions."
That's what many of us have been doing since the Gettleman years. That's not what I hear him doing when he's criticizing fans, telling us that Daboll did a great job last year getting to 6 wins, and explaining that the Maras take every loss personally.
I appreciate the interview and you guys are doing a great job; I just found some of the things Paul said to be tough take with a straight face.
Dottino is not the easiest listen. Not saying he can’t describe

Not calling you out here. But if Jones has a dynamite year and we have a top 10 defense, why would that only result in 9 wins. A dynamite QB with decent surrounding talent on O and one of the better defenses in the league is a Super Bowl contender that should be looking at 12+ wins.
"When the team isn't doing well the media used to be like a doctor. They'd ask "what is it that's going wrong here" and try to identify possible solutions."

again he's not my cup of tea but on the factual stuff his version is still generally closer to correct than negative narratives that invent (like the florio stuff) or deny things we see with our eyes (like the maye stuff).
So what do you think Dottino thinks is a dynamite year by Jones?

I found myself agreeing with him on Maye; I still don't believe the interest was that great and I don't think the Giants are out on Jones.
But the Giants are the third worst team in the NFL over a decade, yet he seems to take umbrage with criticism. What does he expect?

i dont think anyone takes umbrage with criticism. there's a difference between fair criticism based on real things and unfair criticisms which are based on fantasy or purely intended to be inflammatory (clickbait) with eric's example of the florio stuff being the most recent. there's more than enough stuff to criticize the organization on fairly.
Namely, "back in my day, beat writers used to serve as doctors who would presribed the problem and offer solutions instead of criticize."
This communicated to me that the team does not get it. Back in Dottino's day in the 80s, 90s, and 00s, the Giants did not have many double-digit loss seasons. Between 1984 - 2014, they only lost 10 games or more 5 times. They were not a regular season juggernaught during this period, but they rarely did worse than 8-8 or 7-9.
Between 2014 - 2024, they've had 8 seasons with double-digit loses! The beats and the fans have offered plenty of ideas and solutions for them, yet they keep losing. Does Dottino not grasp that everyone is eventually going to lose patience? The way he speaks, it's like he thinks it's only the fans and the media becoming ungrateful, and the Giants have remained the same. With all due respect, give me a f%ckin' break.
Sometimees I wish a new owner would come in and not only fire personnel people, but some of these long-time PR shills as well. The excuses are enabled at every level.
-Giants are a family run team, you don't know how much they truly CARE about winning (in a response to Mara's infamous quote about screwing Daniel Jones's career, not in reference to the actual team)

Hope he's NOT right about missing the playoffs. Beat the Eagles twice! lol
He sees 9 wins on this schedule? The delusion is strong in that building, I tell you…

Yeah this really stuck out. He literally called the pursuit of Maye as just "due diligence" multiple times. There are many posters on this board that would call you an idiot for suggesting that it was just "due diligence" and they were never that aggressive in pursuing an upgrade at QB, yet that is exactly what Dottino just said
Coaches and GMs lie to you every day in press conferences.
'I think the Giants are a 9-8 team.'

Thanks for watching and the comments. I thought the interview went very well overall and Paul has great insights, even if you don't agree with him..

It's not a question of whether I agree with him. The issue is that I don't trust him or believe him, he's just a shill for ownership
We know Neal's injury history. We also know he's still recovering from offseason ankle surgery.

for the first half of his rookie year. Too bad the guys didn't ask Dottino if he knew whether Neal has always been injured in one way or another his entire short Giants career. And if the answer is yes, is he healthy now?

So when Neal did play, was he always playing hurt for one reason or another?
my 2 cents are there are ways he could report a little more accurately with the access he gets that aren't negative or against what he's allowed to say from the access he's allowed. be it areas they are struggling or areas of weakness. i dont find him to be a shill as much as he is 1 note. he is always cheerleading. if aaron robinson were still on the roster this would be his year.
typically you have to take everything he says with a grain of salt but credit to the bbi show i thought he was a lot more candid and less 1 note than usual.
and bad fans lap up bad reporters who are mostly at this point clickbait launderers. the media today lives on clicks and negative narratives untethered to reality that they will pump as long as they can get 1 more click.
the florio example is this to a tee. engineered nonsense for fans looking for anything to validate how big sad they are and then pile hump it to death.

Eric - excellent use of the phrase 'pile hump'!
Not much to see/hear here.

Not calling you out here. But if Jones has a dynamite year and we have a top 10 defense, why would that only result in 9 wins. A dynamite QB with decent surrounding talent on O and one of the better defenses in the league is a Super Bowl contender that should be looking at 12+ wins.

again he's not my cup of tea but on the factual stuff his version is still generally closer to correct than negative narratives that invent (like the florio stuff) or deny things we see with our eyes (like the maye stuff).
Give me dynamite-Jones numbers.
