BBI Thoughts on Cam Ward

Angus : 9/4/2024 12:29 pm
I know its too soon, but that's the type of discussion we can have on BBI. I am hearing he has size, a good arm, and he sees the field well. From his quotes, he sounds mature in his off the field stuff, too. Maybe this will be a good year for Qb's.

I suspect there will be "several" QBs that are going to be worth it by next April
he definitely made the right decision to pull himself from the draft
Eric on Li : 9/4/2024 12:36 pm : link
he has a lot of ability, whether or not he's a top 5-10 qb im not sure, id probably bet against, but id have said the exact same thing about jayden daniels at this time last year.

everything is set up for him to have a heisman type season, and i see more ability with him than Nix at a minimum. so if he does that and plays well in some playoff games, i think he's likely at minimum in the 1st round conversation.
He’s going to play himself
GiantsMakeMeDrink : 9/4/2024 12:50 pm : link
Into a top 3 pick, possibly #1 if he leads Miami deep into the playoff
I was hoping that he would come out last draft
Jay on the Island : 9/4/2024 12:52 pm : link
and the Giants grabbing him in round 2 if they didn't get a QB in the first.
Good Thoughts
Angus : 9/4/2024 12:53 pm : link
I will stay tuned.
If you like a QB prospect, it doesn’t really matter.
ThomasG : 9/4/2024 12:57 pm : link
You still need either the Giants to lose almost every single game, pray the only teams ahead of us are Chi-Wash-NE, or hope that Joe Schoen is replaced.

May need more than one of the above as well.
For those thirsting,

it's turning out to be another big year for college QB's going into the 2025 draft. Lots to get excited about.

You took the words right out of my mouth! In all seriousness I have been on him since I saw some clips of him from Incarnate Word. When he does stuff right he shows things that very few QB's can do, but then he has plays like the INT against Florida that he should not be making at this point. If you can get him to be more disciplined you can really have something.
THis QB Class is shaping up to be far more interesting than

Uh huh...every year, supposedly, Miami is back. Then they fall apart at some point because they're overrated and poorly coached. Mario Cristobal sucks.

Oooooh, they beat up on a bad UF team! Wow

Normally, I would agree with this, especially with Cristobal under the headset.

But this year may be different because Ward is considerably better than recent QB dopes like Tyler Van Dyke, D'Eriq King, Jarren Williams, etc.

Now, whether Ward will eventually be able to overcome Cristobal's game management idiocy remains to be seen. Although he has hired a "Game Management Coach" to help him...
Ward looked great in week 1.
Tim in Eternal Blue : 9/4/2024 1:23 pm : link

Miami has a soft schedule, so the possibility exists for him to put together a Heisman worthy campaign. We will see what happens. Canes should be 4-0 going into a home game with VT. He will have some cake games to pad his stats.
I

like Ward. As someone said, he looked terrific against Florida. I also think Allar could be somebody that interests the Giants. He has the big build and frame that Daboll seems to value.

Are you sure U of F is bad, or are they bad because Miami made them look bad? I don't see the same Miami teams of the past decade and a half
Ward look good against Florida

They were dogshit last year and unranked to start this year. I think it's safe to assume they won't be particularly good.
Ward is a player.
Chris L. : 9/4/2024 1:40 pm : link
Besides the obvious physical talents which are many perhaps the most impressive thing about him is how cool and collected he is in the pocket. I have been watching him since last year at Washington St. He could go top 5 in the draft. Would definately support a Cam Ward first round pick by the GMen.
Ed Ogeron and Gene Chizik became much better coaches
Eric on Li : 9/4/2024 1:54 pm : link
when they got better QBs. FSU may make UF look good this year so needless to say the ACC blows giving Ward and Cristobal the chance to put themselves in big games that change their respective surrounding narratives. Miami added a lot of talent this past offseason beyond Ward too.
Ward looked OK
JFIB : 9/4/2024 2:09 pm : link
To me. I thought Moss looked exceptional. Vet aware, threw with anticipation and accuracy as well.

Their schedule is soft, they should win 11+ games. I don’t think they are world beaters but ward makes them better than they have been in years
Solid start to the season
Lines of Scrimmage : 9/4/2024 3:37 pm : link
but Florida doesn't look very good.

Next years draft can wind up being pretty good for QB's. With the new playoff system, hopefully a lot of them get into the playoffs.

Really hard identifying college QB's with the different rules (especially OL) compared to the NFL. Hopefully you get at least a few games where they go against very good D's so it isn't so easy.
If Ward has a good year
widmerseyebrow : 9/4/2024 4:13 pm : link
It will be hard to ignore that he has done so for three different teams/systems. He has a good arm. He's someone to keep an eye on for sure.
Florida has two games the rest of the way with an FPI
ajr2456 : 9/4/2024 4:22 pm : link
Chance of over 40%. They’re bad.

I’m not fully sold on Ward. I have it right now as:

Sanders
Dart
Beck
Ewers
Milroe
Ward
Salter
Nussmeier
Smith
Gabriel
Weigman

I think it's fair to wonder about Ward's arm strength. But he does have an uncanny ability to use different arm angles to make plays. That's a talent.

And Ward does complete 65% of his passes for his college career. No real red flag there for me.

Let's see some other ACC
Blueworm : 9/4/2024 4:31 pm : link
defenses scheme against him.

I should have checked his schedule first.
I know every year, Miami gets a little bit of hype,
barens : 9/4/2024 8:58 pm : link
but this year, they didn't just beat Florida in the swamp, they pretty much manhandled them. Unless your team is Vanderbilt(at least in previous years), you do that to an SEC team, you deserve props.

Miami does look like they have a lot of things clicking, besides Ward looks like the best QB they've had in years.
beyond ward miami has a legitimately SEC-good OL and DL
Eric on Li : 9/4/2024 9:41 pm : link
that's where they beat florida and where they are likely to beat everyone in the acc too. that doesnt say a ton because the acc sucks.

the rest is fine but nothing special which is why Ward is in an interesting position. he has a chance to elevate what probably isnt a top 5 team in the new playoff format. it's different because he has a lot more on his passing ability but it's a bit like JJM last year (he did have a top 5 team around him, but without the prolific passing game the other playoff teams had). cristobal tries to build his rosters trenches out the same way harbough did.
Ward is over rated.
LauderdaleMatty : 9/5/2024 2:36 pm : link
Miami beat a horrible UF team. Not saying he isn’t going to be good or even great but saw some really dumb throws that vs a better team would have cost him

And as usual the ACC is a joke. There might be one legit tip 20 team in Miami. ND is a lock for the playoffs as they get a cake walk again this year.
I like him, but feel like I need to see a lot more

This is correct and how I feel about a bunch of these guys. Lets see what happens when the real bullets start flying it tough games. I mean some of these teams played FCS opponents, Ole Miss played Furman. I Like Dart, but I want to see him against the SEC caliber teams. Ewers and Texas tore up Colorado State but its not clear how good they are. I'm interested to see what happens @ Michigan on Saturday. Michigans D still looks pretty tough. Same with Milroe
Strength of opponent is a convenient stick to beat a guy with,
Go Terps : 9/5/2024 3:45 pm : link
but it's rarely used consistently. Last year people used it to kill Penix and Nix, but not Caleb Williams.

Some of the most talented and/or highest paid QBs in the league now didn't pay in the SEC or Big Ten: Mahomes, Jackson, Allen, Herbert, Prescott, Purdy, Rodgers, Love, Goff, Murray, Watson, Lawrence and our very own Daniel Jones, to name a few.

Judge the reality and not some made up hypothetical. There's no more lame argument than "If you put X player behind Y line" or "If you put X against Y defenses"...
Prescott...

Ah my mistake.
It's not like this was Ward's first football game
widmerseyebrow : 9/5/2024 4:21 pm : link
Guy has been starting for over 4 years now. He's beaten some good teams and lost to some bad teams. So Florida might be shit this year. OK, well he played as you'd expect a good QB to play.

If:
1) You expect our team to show improvement this year because you think Schoen bolstered the overall talent of the team in spite of the quarterback situation and
2) Our FO was not sold on the #8, #10, and #12 pick QBs this year

Then brace yourself to adopt a flawed QB prospect based on where we will be picking in 2025.
I liked him two seasons ago
JonC : 9/5/2024 4:29 pm : link
but he seems to rely on off-schedule plays, and declined in production as time wore on, wasn't as impressed with him last season. Plays with his hair on fire, but didn't see consistent or strong decision making. Granted, this is approx a 5-6 game sample size but against good competition.
There are things to like in his game. Will be interesting to watch
ThomasG : 9/5/2024 5:03 pm : link
his season unfold. Or maybe fold.

Just somebody please let us know when Schoen shows up to watch him on any given Saturday.

Thx

I do find it comical that there's this excuse that UF is a horrible team. Any SEC team, especially in Florida, is a really tough out, and make no mistake, they have speed and size, and Ward tore through that defense like a hot knife thru butter.

I don't think there are many QB's in College football that would have had that kind of success in that environment.
