Feeling optimistic? Most Giant fans aren't (Athletic)

In The Athletic’s inaugural NFL Hope-O-Meter survey, quarterback stability was synonymous with hope. The five fan bases wearing the rosiest-colored glasses ahead of the 2024 season boast either proven, in-their-prime veterans (Jared Goff in Detroit; Patrick Mahomes in Kansas City) or rising stars (Caleb Williams in Chicago; Jordan Love in Green Bay; C.J. Stroud in Houston) at quarterback.

On the other hand, almost anywhere there’s an unsettled or underwhelming quarterback situation, a grumpy fan base is following close behind. Nothing creates louder groans among a team’s supporters than a stop-gap situation at quarterback. Right, Raiders fans?

. . .

Quarterbacks did not shape every fan’s response, however. Ownership, injuries, contract disputes, coaching concerns and doubts about a team’s offensive line were among other key factors. But all roads tend to lead back to the starting QBs.

As a Bears fan named Erich explained the reason for his optimism: “Quarterback. Quarterback. Quarterback.”

. . .

We left the question simple and open-ended: Are you optimistic about your team? Yes or no. The nearly 12,000 fans who responded were free to decide what that question meant to them.

Below, we’ve listed each team’s optimism score and precisely four reader responses, some of which were edited for clarity and length.

Giants fans rank 31/32 on the Athletics optimism scale. Cowboys fans are 1 spot ahead at 30. Last is NO fans.

Quote:
31. New York Giants: 17.2 percent optimism

Optimist Jay: I just have a feeling Daniel Jones is going into the season with a huge chip on his shoulder, knowing the Giants tried to trade up for Drake Maye. He needs to have a career year or he’s toast. They have improved the O-line and added wide receiver Malik Nabers. And believe it or not, I think losing Saquon Barkley will be addition by subtraction in that it will force the offense to move the ball around to others. If the young secondary steps up, the defense has a chance to be top 10.

Optimist Rich: I’m probably delusional.

Pessimist Charles: Daniel Jones would struggle to quarterback an FCS school, let alone an NFL offense. Add this to the lack of depth in the secondary and the fact that we only have one good receiver, and a race to the bottom is likely.

Pessimist Danny: The Giants have never been conventionally good. In Super Bowl seasons and recent playoff runs alike, they are entirely dependent on miracles, crazy catches, the other team’s misfortune, etc. The Giants don’t win games by large margins. Everything they do is squeaking it out. Terrible. Seven wins max.

Is just stupid at this point. He’s not great, but he’s not as bad as the media or fans claim either.

Can’t QB an FCS School? Well that 2022 Giants roster must have been historically good around him for him to make the playoffs AND win a playoff game on the road.

Wan'dale is very underrated by many. I feel very good about Nabers and Wan'dale as the two to build around. Slayton is finally where he should be as a solid 3rd or 4th option. I'm unsure about Hyatt but at worst he should be a situational deep threat.

Pessimist Danny is completely wrong. Those '07 and '11 playoff runs were not 'squeaking' by. They were dominant at times and held their own against very tough teams like the NFCCG against Green Bay and San Fran. Also, check out the schedule for the '00 season, they outscored their opponents by multiple scores in the majority of games. The 80's were before my time but one of the most dominant defenses of all time for years.

Never been more blah on a season in awhile. Hopefully I’ll be pleasantly surprised.

We attend a gray tuns can stadium.last season it felt as it rained every single home game. Not much worse heading home for a three jour drive in the rain looking forward to have coworkers and the media tell how much your team sucks.but at least we get a free medium Pepsi.

Sure they gave out rings this season after raising parking prices.

The hits keep on coming and many are weary. It's easy to turn the channel. It's harder when you invest time and money with little hope

But if it's a chance to beat Dallas and a few others. Go giants
I think we’ll see competitive football

I just don’t think it leads anywhere. Nine wins two years ago, six wins last year, seven or eight this year? Where are we going? QB situation figures to still be murky. We’ll have cap space but not a ton of it.

If you squint you can see a core of a good team: Dex, AT, Burns, Nabers, Thibs, Okereke, Wan’dale, Banks, hopefully the rookie RB and TE flash, along with Nubin. I mean, it’s something.

I'm not the media or a fan, so there are no biases.

So, if 5 wins against .500+ teams in 5 years isn't bad, what is? 4? 3? 2? 1? 0?

Once again, up comes that playoff road win. At the end of the season the Giants and the Vikings sucked. Someone had to win that game. And, anyone who understands the game, knows that a team playing lousy at home has a home team disadvantage, being booed at home. Losing on the road they don't get booed, as the crowd of lemmings is cheering on the home team.

WOW! What bizarro world are you living in?

If you believe Pessimist Danny is completely wrong, can you quantify your statement.

The last three playoff wins in 2007; 21-17, 23-20 (OT) and 17-14, and the last two playoff wins in 2011; 20-17 (OT) and 21-17.

Apparently squeaking by = held their own, in that world?

Not only that, the 2011 team was the first team with a negative point differential to go to a Superbowl
2011 was IMO different than 07
bhill410 : 9/4/2024 3:59 pm : link
2007 we needed Bradshaw to run for a 4th quarter 88 yard run to make the playoffs after they crapped the bed the week before.

In 2011 we definitely needed some Cruz magic against the Jets but the team felt more in control with a couple of fluky losses here and there but some really good wins.

That said let’s all be honest / no one expected to realistically win in either year.
Pessimist Dave has an amazing point

He is right....We haven't had a dominating team since 1986..unless you count 2008 right before Plax shot himself.

This team does has never been the "fastest team on turf", "Legion of Boom", etc......everything is hardfought and so much agony with the victory.
Shocking

When the Athletic gives the Giants a power ranking of 31, are we surprised when its readers are pessimistic?
I’m nervous too

2008 for sure was dominant. They beat up on the top echelon teams (Arizona, Pittsburgh and Baltimore).

The pessimistic guy trying to say the 2007 and 2011 Giants were flukes is just ludicrous.

The New York Giants, from 2005 to 2012, were a winning football team and while not elite, a consistent playoff contender.

The 2022 playoff win is starting to take on mythical status. Why do I hear Al Bundy ringing in my ears:

"And despite the fact that I find you fat and repulsive, I would like to tell you my glory days how I scored four touchdowns in one football game and won the very last city championship trophy that Polk High had"
...
SFGFNCGiantsFan : 9/4/2024 6:32 pm : link
The '08 Giants weren't dominant? That team beat both Super Bowl teams @ their house, started 11-1, & ran for 200 plus yards on a Ravens defense. What happened to that team was the DL was running on fumes @ the end-the Osi loss that summer cannot be overstated-& Plax shot himself, which made our offense much easier to game plan for even if Plax was having a meh season for him.
Best thing in that

It's The Defense I Fear
Jeffrey : 9/5/2024 8:32 am : link
All the talk is about Jones and the offense, but somehow with a better line, much better receivers, an improved TE room and a new play caller, I think that the offense will be better.

Although I hated the arrogance of Wink, it seems to me that the defense has moved to the opposite extreme. I fear that we have moved back to the bend, don't break mold. Rushing 4 is a true gamble on the back 7 to be disciplined and hold their coverages longer. It may work but with a young back 7 it is asking alot.

100% agree with you. We led the league in plus takeaways last year. That is unlikely to happen this year and many teams completely flip the script on a year to year basis. I see a similar record as last year for this team.

His best season is around 500 yards. He's not underrated. Maybe people are not respecting his potential, but as far as proof goes, we have nothing... that said, I think he'll put up a nice season in 2024.
