Backup QB

monstercoo : 9/9/2024 3:25 pm
I think we should criticize how the organization handled the backup QB position this offseason.

Letting Taylor go, although he wasn't very good and injury prone, looks like it backfired. I think he's a better QB than Jones.

Lock has looked terrible all offseason and it has forced them to roster 3 QBs.

Now we have no option but to start Jones and it looks like the season will be a total loss.
Ha! It was malpractice by Schoen & Company to ignore the QB position

this off-season.

At this moment, there is no hope because we don't have any QB that should be the future of this franchise.

How can we trust he will pick the right one next year....if he chooses to do so.

I hate to say this

But I think the strategy was "If Jones doesn't turn it around we better stink enough to get our guy this draft".

The problem is if you're Schoen/Daboll it may be someone else drafting and developing that person.
I Was Fine With The Giants Moving On From Tyrod Taylor

He's old, has a low ceiling and is often injured.

I think/thought Lock was a decent move. Not just relying on DeVito and going with a backup that has significant NFL playing time.

I think the jury is still out on Lock. Obviously playing poorly AND getting hurt is exactly what the Giants didn't want.

IF the Giants bench Jones, my guess is they have to at least initially go with Lock. But if Lock also struggles, I could see DeVito starting the following week.
Absolutely

I'll knock him on that as well. We could have easily upgraded the QB room this offseason, outside of the draft even. I think we still can... but a part of me wants a really good shot at Ward, Beck, Ewers and company. So I'm fine with trotting out our sad sack of signal callers, to assure ourselves of a top 3 pick this spring.
True, the Giants may have a problem at qb but that defense is

terrible! They allowed Sam Darnold, yes, that Sam Darnold to stand din the pocket and look like the second coming of Peyton Manning. Not to mention their inability to stop the run. A lot needs to be done to fix this team!
Tyrod wasn't really an option after how
Section331 : 9/9/2024 3:40 pm : link
he was treated last year. IIRC, Schoen did try to bring him back, but he was refused. We all knew there was some bad blood there, the fact that Schoen didn't is concerning.

He waited too long to pivot and any decent backups had other plans. Even if he expected Jones to play well, Schoen understands how critical the backup spot is given Jones's injury history. How this was handled is an indictment of Schoen's decision-making.

There were six QBs drafted in Round 1 of this year's draft, and the 7th QB didn't go until Round 5.

Trading up to get Caleb or Jayden was never realistic. Of the remaining four (Maye, Penix, McCarthy, and Nix), three of them (Maye, Penix, and McCarthy) didn't play in Week 1, and Nix's performance didn't scream "future of the franchise."

So it's unclear to me the basis for determining that Schoen committed malpractice by not passing on Nabers and instead drafting one of these guys.

We were always going to be stuck with Daniel Jones for this season. There was no magic wand we could wave to change that.

This has been a huge problem with this Giants organization! They just seem to ignore this important backup QB position?! While other Organizations sign the Gardner Minshew’s, the Giants sign terrible backups or even worse, go diving into the bargain box and get anyone who plays football?? It’s insane.
The Giants wanted Taylor back. He was their 1st option
DeVito32 : 9/9/2024 4:38 pm : link
Taylor didn't want to come back. It was obvious. He didn't give the Giants a chance to match.

Lock was their 2nd choice.

You also have to consider that most QB's wouldn't want to come here after watching the Giants OL the past few years. The QBs signed before the Giants signed all the OL.
Russel Wilson signed for 1.2 mil
HardTruth : 9/9/2024 5:20 pm : link
“According to Jeff Howe of The Athletic, the Giants "didn't make any promises about playing time,"

And thats why he didn’t come here.

Justin Fields also was traded for a 6th

DeVito will get the ball downfield,
Simms11 : 9/9/2024 5:25 pm : link
but he too holds the ball too long.

We might have a problem at QB? But I thought you said Jones was going to be an All-Pro this year?
It was malpractice
ajr2456 : 9/9/2024 6:19 pm : link
Not to add a QB other than Lock. And this is coming from a Joe Schoen excuse maker.

If they believed in DeVito enough to not add a developmental QB, than why did they give Lock $5 million?
Taylor left for more
section125 : 9/9/2024 6:25 pm : link
money. FAs go where they want. The Giants didn't let Taylor go, he went with the higher pay.

Based on Taylor’s actions toward the Giants sideline during the preseason game , I don’t think he would have came back if the money was the same
.

I'd say that a vet like Flacco or Winston could have made the Giants a possible 9 win playoff team, but this team may have been too poorly coached anyway.

Root for losses.
