Money ball

Hilary : 9/11/2024 6:28 pm
Logan Ryan on with Bob Papa spoke negatively about JS and his cap management. Called him money ball.Giants likely went without the punt returner and fullback week 1 ,they just signed so that their salaries would not be guaranteed for the year. I think the fullback is important to the blocking schemes the o line coach likes and was needed as was the punt returner for sure

how much more evidence 98% of the NFL doesn't care about the FB.

Haha. Papa-one of the ultimate shills-let someone talk negatively about a fellow employee in Joe? The sharks are circling.

Let some pretty good talent walk out the door and it’s often over “2 or 3 million”. McKinney, Love, Barkley, Leo, Hernandez, Peppers, Engram…

I know the cap situation was tough at first, but there’s always a way to make it work. They could kept all of those guys for the price of Jones

It’s my #1 complaint with him, outside of the Jones contract and the 2 awful 3rd round picks in 2022. Can’t even get mad about the Neal/KT picks as those guys were supposed to be blue chippers

seems so. Can you believe they're chumming the water after 1 game?

First off Giants offered Love more than Seahawks did, he turned them down because he thought he couod get more and ended up having to settle for the seahawks offer..

Barkley again the Giants offered him 23 million guaranteed TWICE and he turned it down..

Hernandez? he was terrible for the giants and everyone wanted him gone..

Peppers and engram? seriously? we are killing schoen for not re-signing them?

As for Mckinney, the safety room is actually a strength of this team

What do you make of all this arnie? We both have been on record liking Daboll, do you think we are looking at another house cleaning?
Logan Ryan

is full of shit.

He was a cheerleader for Gettleman because DG gave him a $31mil/3 yr contract to go on the local sports talk shows and pump up the organization.

Schoen stays at least 1 more year beyond this

Yeah I liked him as a player, but he seemed the locker room lawyer type

And he was shipped out fast when the new regime took over, so any opinion of his requires a solid grain of salt
Papa should be embarrassed for having Logan Ryan on

tell that to the good teams that have one ie Ravens 49’rs
There was little cap savings
Dankbeerman : 9/12/2024 8:09 am : link
when you count the players elevated salary.

by leaving them un guaranteed they can rotate guys through those bottom 2 spots. They are doing it with vested vets not guys who have to go through waivers. They are basically like baseball players on 2 way deals who getted shuffled in and out of the bullpen.

Somebody is making the minum each week but they can adjust based on who's needed.

Yeah, that's it. Schoen has been an astute and cunning GM much feared by his competitors around the League.

He better hang on to this job like grim death because he's never getting another GM gig with this track record.
They didn’t go without a punt returner
BillT : 9/12/2024 8:42 am : link
The punt returner got hurt in warmups.

Hernandez?
Punt returner
Hilary : 9/12/2024 8:58 am : link
Punt returner was not well and injured
in warm ups he was dealing with a groin pull
and it was not at all surprising that he was a no go.
Schoen has a modern sense of strategy
RHPeel : 9/12/2024 9:04 am : link
The Giants were very poorly allocated in terms of positional value when he started, and Schoen aggressively moved to fix that issue. I credit him for this... but right now, my concern is that he's gotten the wrong players at those high-value positions. If Burns and Thibodeaux and Neal are all quality contributors, the whole exercise looks a lot better than if they're all wastes of the resources they had.

The strategy and logic is sound, but if you get the players wrong, none of it works, you lose a bunch of games, and no one cares about your strategy being optimal.

Swapping McKinney and Barkley for a better offensive line and a better pass rush was definitely the right goal, but if you got the players wrong... it's going to backfire.

It's early days this year. It's not clear whether the problem is just Jones, or Jones plus the rest of the roster. There's a *lot* of high-dollar talent on this team. Either those players are going to earn their salary/draft slot, or they're not.
Money Ball and smart cap management
ColHowPepper : 9/12/2024 9:15 am : link
are not bad objectives and traits; the problem has been that, on balance, he just has not been very good with his draft selections. 2022 can be excused, to an extent, because he and BD had just gotten in the door and had to rely to a great extent on incumbent scouts and process. That was supposed to have improved as he got his own people in place.

Now comes 2024 and it seems to be much better, early returns. Unfortunately, this news has been buried by the DJ fiasco.

Which doesn’t line up with the reasons you gave in the OP.

I'm all for positional value. Just have to get the players right.
