NGT: RIP Joe Schmidt

Hall of Fame middle linebacker Joe Schmidt, who played 13 years for the Lions where he garnered 8 All-Pro selections, died Wednesday at the age of 92.

I remember him as the coach of the Lions

when I was a kid. (I see he has a pretty good record.) Didn't know he was such a star as a player. Thanks for sharing.
He was the best MLB I ever saw, period. IMHO, it would be close

between Butkus and Schmidt, but Schmidt was also great when dropping in coverage. Schmidt in his era was even better than Bill George at that time and a lot better than Huff., “which I hate to admit”
He was in the movie Paper Lion

With Alan Alda. I think 1968. Alex Karras too. RIP.
Ya, he was coach of the Lions when Paper Lion was filmed.

So he, Karras, and many players appeared.
He was mlb for the Lions when the beat the Packers on Thanksgiving.

It was a great game. If I remember, the Packers had been undefeated, but Detroit kept blitzing them very effectively.
I still remember the Lions beating the undefeated Pack on turkey day.

It was a lot like watching the GIANTS defense dismantle somebody only better.

Those two teams (NYG & Detroit) made me a confirmed fan of defensive football, so I really don't like the glorified volleyball that passes for pro football today.
One of the great MLB's. So many great MLB's during that time period.
