Be Careful of Players who "Flash"

DefenseWins : 9/13/2024 6:19 am
this thread is inspired by the news of Toney missing from practice again.

Too many people were going nuts for this guy due to a handful of plays. We even heard "never give up on talent" by far too many people after we traded him.

We (or even Giants leadership) have been fooled before and truly want to believe in a player based off of a very small sample of success.

We can of course look at our QB who after winning that first game in Tampa had Giants fans fist pumping. Then flashed again in the playoffs which led to his contract.

Are we at that point now with KT who flashes but is not consistent? How about Hyatt who may not be worth less than a bag of dicks after this season.

What other player in our team's history did we hold onto for so long not simply because he was a draft pick but because we kept getting teased by the occasional play?
KT and Toney aren't comparable

There is a difference between not being able to get over that hump where you can beat elite tackles, and just being a waste of a roster spot. Toney can't even get on the field and he just doesn't care. KT has been in the league a year less and played over a thousand snaps more than him.

KT needs to develop his flashes into that next level of elite play, Toney probably already has the talent but needs a reality adjustment.
flash

anyone can do it for 1 game or even a handful games. The true indicator his continued success over a long period.

Case in point- Daniel Jones. 7 good games out of 61.
Also with regards to KT
Blue Baas : 9/13/2024 7:07 am : link
I think Strahan has brought up how sacks can be streaky. The year before his record setting season he only had 9.5 sacks, including getting 0 nine times, and a run of 4 sackless games near the end of the year. He also didn't hit double digits until his 6th year at age 26.

We're seeing a lot of good players leave the Giants and excel. KT is 23. He doesn't deserve any of these kinds of labels yet.
After Jones

KT is BBI’s resident whipping boy this week.
KT had 50 tackles & 11.5 sacks last year
HardTruth : 9/13/2024 7:41 am : link
Thats more than just flashing and not remotely like Kadarius Toney and Im not saying Thibs is some star or something but he can play in this league
We should apply this “flash” logic to

GM & HC

Many are applying the Jones excuse making to Schoen & Daboll now

Yeah they “flashed” with Josh Allen , their first 9 games here and 1 playoff game vs Vikings

Big picture though? They have not been very good at all
I think this is an apples/oranges
Biteymax22 : 9/13/2024 8:01 am : link
Type of comparison.

Thibs does more than flash, he accumulated double digit sacks last season. What he does is disappear against very good tackles, so there's 8 good games from him, 4 okay ones and 5 horrid ones a year. Consistency and learning to think you're way through beating better players are what he needs to work on.

With Toney, its not flashing, he legitimately has all the talent in the world to be a great receiver in this league. His problem is he's an outright mental case who doesn't want to practice or work. Players like this shouldn't be around your team.
Pass rushing success occurs on a very low % of

Plays. It’s very hard to tell the average from the above average with such small sample sizes.

When i look at KT, I am not looking at sacks. I am looking at everything, his run stopping, pressures and overall impact on the game.

Let's not get hung up too much on KT here. I just used him as an example. Plug in whatever player you want.

I’m just saying it’s a difficult skill to scout.
what does be careful
pjcas18 : 9/13/2024 8:26 am : link
mean? the damage was done when he was drafted, so what does "be careful" mean?
And what do you mean
pjcas18 : 9/13/2024 8:29 am : link
by held onto too long?

He was a 1st round pick who didn't make it to the trade deadline of his 2nd season.

I can't remember the Giants cutting bait so quickly on a draft pick ever.
So the argument is
Mike from Ohio : 9/13/2024 8:32 am : link
the Giants should have traded him the second he "flashed" in his rookie season, because "flashing" is a warning sign?

If Nabers has a couple of amazing plays against Washington this week, but also a drop or slips on a route, how do you think the Giants should protect themselves from him? Trade him now?

Like Schoen wanted to keep Toney and make his talent work.

The man does not care nor has a willingness to learn. We saw it happen in Kansas City, too, and playing with a great coach and great quarterback. If his moment was going to strike, that would've been the time for it happen. It didn't, and it won't. Now in Cleveland, I'll be surprised if he's active any more than three games.
I think what the OP is trying to say
Mike from Ohio : 9/13/2024 9:19 am : link
is be careful of players who have a ton of talent, but don't seem to care about the game or want to practice because they have other interests.

"Flash" is absolutely the wrong way to describe that.
