A Look Back: Giants at Boston Redskins 1934 Week 5

Yes, before the Commanders changed names, they changes cities...and they also changed names. They began their NFL tenure as the Boston Braves in 1932 before changing to Redskins in 1933 and relocating to Washington in 1937.

But I digress.

The 1-2 Giants paid a visit to Boston looking to get their season on track as they entered 1034 with high expectations following a great 1933 where they won the NFL Eastern Division title and participated in the NFL's first ever championship game (which they lost in heartbreaking fashion on the final play of the game).

the star of the giants was tailback Harry Newman, their heir apparent of passing sensation Bennie Friedman. Newman was a do0-it-all back who could run, pass and kick, and all those talents were on display at Fenway Park on this October afternoon.

Newman got things rolling immediately when he returned the game's opening kickoff 93 yards for a touchdown - only the second KOR TD in franchise history and the first to open a game (the Boston Globe has a good, detailed description of the run). Ken Strong booted the point-after. Later in the quarter he added a field goal, kicked into a strong wind, for a 10-0 New York advantage.

The home team made a strong push coming out of halftime, with the wind at their backs, and assumed a 13-10 lead before the close of the quarter.

The tide turned in the fourth quester when Newman, playing defense, recovered a Cliff Battles fumble and returned it 23 years into Redskin territory. After completing two passes Newman kicked a 26-yard field goal to tie the game at 13.

On New York's next possession, Newman struck again with a 40-yard rush to put the Giants on Boston's 19-yard line. The drive stalled after a penalty and Newman put the Giants ahead for good with his third field goal with around four minutes on the clock.

All-in-all it was a heroic effort by Newman, who scored 15 of the Giants 16 points. He did it by running, passing and playing heads-up defense. Coincidentally, Newman also had a big game in Boston the year before in the Giants 21-20 victory which featured him making a long TD run later in the game for another comeback victory.

The Giants, of course, went on to win their second NFL title with a legendary upset win over the Chicago Bears at the Polo Grounds. Unfortunately, Newman was not a part of the game as he suffered a fractured vertebrae in the November game against Chciago and the tailback duties were then assumed by rookie Ed Danowski.

After holding out to start the 1935 season, Newman rejoined the Giants for the remainder of the year, which was their third consecutive Eastern Division title before jumping to the upstart AFL in 1926 with the Brooklyn Tigers.

Enjoy!
