The Giants are and have been Hapless. For the majority of the teams history besides brief periods of greatness the majority of our team has been futile
arose from the haplessness of ownership and the appointment of George Young as GM in 1979. The further we’ve gotten from that era and those associated with it, the more we’ve come to resemble the 1965-1980 Giants. It’s no coincidence.
and I've been trying to find the right word to describe your career here. "Checkered" comes to mind, of course. "Disastrous" also suggests itself, as does "catastrophic".
ZH: How about "colorful" or perhaps "remarkable"?
The Dean: Yes, those are applicable. "Colorful" certainly reflects the spirit of your record, and who could argue with "remarkable"?
Beside themselves
Between a rock and a hard place
On the horns of a dilemma
Neither here nor there
Unable to pass muster, or pass the test of their mettle
Failing to beat into the wind
Luffing their jib
Not able to get their ducks in a row
and are looking everywhere to find it - the press box, the parking lot, the bottom of the used towel cart, and even the electrical service room, but to no avail.
If but some vengeful god would call to me
From up the sky, and laugh: “Thou suffering thing,
Know that thy sorrow is my ecstasy,
That thy love's loss is my hate's profiting!”
Then would I bear it, clench myself, and die,
Steeled by the sense of ire unmerited;
Half-eased in that a Powerfuller than I
Had willed and meted me the tears I shed.
But not so. How arrives it joy lies slain,
And why unblooms the best hope ever sown?
—Crass Casualty obstructs the sun and rain,
And dicing Time for gladness casts a moan. . . .
These purblind Doomsters had as readily strown
Blisses about my pilgrimage as pain.

ZH: Who indeed?
The Dean: And yet, "catastrophic" stays with me.
