Snap Counts and thoughts from Dan Duggan

Dan Duggan @DDuggan21

Giants' offensive snap counts vs. Browns:

• The plan was last week was to incorporate the young RBs more, but they just stuck with Devin Singletary because he was rolling. Saw Tyrone Tracy much more involved yesterday. I think that will continue.

Tracy averaged 4.6 yards on his five carries. Before the long run at the end, Singletary had 15 carries for 22 yards and another fumble. Singletary was effective in the screen game (four catches for 43 yards). They were on the field together for a few snaps.

• Malik Nabers had his lowest snap share of the season (not by much). Giants had a 13 personnel package with Jalin Hyatt or Darius Slayton as the lone WR. Nabers also wasn't on the field for the three kneel downs.

Nabers made plenty of impact on his snaps, mostly in the first half. He had six catches for 66 yards and two TDs in the first half when Cleveland stubbornly refused to have No. 1 CB Denzel Ward travel with him. That changed in the second half and Nabers had two catches for 12 yards after the break. He could have had a big play in the third quarter when he got open deep on a slot fade, but Daniel Jones over-threw him. For all of their chemistry, the deep connection is still lacking. Watch out when they start hitting on those.

The lock of the week was that Daboll would try to hit a big play to Hyatt. They tried in the first quarter with a play-action deep post, but Jones over-threw it. That was Hyatt's only target. He played a season-low 10 snaps, and four of those only came because Slayton missed a series in the fourth quarter with a thumb injury. Hyatt is just not a real part of the offense right now.

Wan'Dale Robinson had his best game of the season with seven catches for 61 yards and four first downs. He's so hard for the first guy to tackle when he catches the ball in the open field (48 of 61 yards after the catch). His limited catch radius showed up on a failed third-and-8 slant in the fourth quarter.

• The problem with the "just play the kids" mindset is sometimes the kids just aren't ready. It looks like it's moving too fast for Theo Johnson right now, but he continues to be the clear TE1. I'm guessing Jones expected him to keep running out on the negated interception. He also had a hold to negate a 20-yard Jones run and couldn't haul in what would have a tough TD catch.

Daniel Bellinger played his most snaps of the season, replacing Johnson in 11 personnel at times in the second half. Bellinger had a 17-yard catch that should have been a much bigger play but Jones under-threw him. He also was called for a hold on the edge to erase a 12-yard run by Jones.

Giants' defensive snap counts vs. Browns:

• Dexter Lawrence was typically dominant with two sacks and four QB hits. Injuries forced the Browns to juggle their offensive line, so Lawrence was going against a backup center in the second half. That's just not fair.

Elijah Chatman made an impact with his first career sack and a fumble recovery. The Giants controlled this game up front, with the run defense bouncing back as well.

• Brian Burns wasn't on much of a pitch count despite the groin injury being enough of a concern that they did a pregame workout to confirm he was ready. He was. That's the type of impact you expect from a $141M player. His strip sack late in the first half was one of the biggest plays of the game.

Kayvon Thibodeaux was active, splitting a sack with Azeez Ojulari and combining with Lawrence to blow up a third-and-1 QB sneak late.

It felt like Ojulari played more, but his snap count wasn't really any higher. He just made much more of an impact. That looked like the early-career Ojulari.

• Bobby Okereke has now played 1,322 consecutive snaps since joining the Giants. Okereke and Micah McFadden made a huge impact with their blitzes up the middle. Even if they didn't get home, they forced Deshaun Watson to panic and/or helped other players get sacks.

McFadden missed three snaps with a back injury, but returned for the next series. Playing LB with a back injury seems like a miserable experience and probably something McFadden is just going to have to deal with for a while. He's such an active player and really made his presence felt on blitzes.

• The cornerback spot is in an alarming spot. Forget Deonte Banks getting picked on by Watson and Amari Cooper. The depth is being tested significantly, with Dru Phillips and Adoree' Jackson both suffering calf injuries in the first half yesterday. Those are rarely short-term injuries.

Cor'Dale Flott showed his versatility, starting outside, moving into the slot, shifting back outside and then finishing in the slot. Was surprised Watson didn't try to exploit Jerry Jeudy's matchup with Flott more.

Isaiah Simmons was called on to play a lot of nickel corner in the second half and was quiet in a good way. Again, surprising the Browns weren't able to find anything with Elijah Moore's quickness matched up with Simmons.

Art Green, who was elevated from the practice squad to play special teams, was forced to play outside corner in the dime package in the second half. He was even playing outside corner in the nickel on the Browns' final possession with Flott replacing Simmons in the slot. Again, not sure how Watson didn't even test a practice squad elevation playing his first career snaps.

Doesn't bode well for Tre Hawkins that he was a healthy scratch with Green getting elevated over him. Nick McCloud said he was hopeful to return from a knee injury for the Dallas game, but the short week will make that a challenge. Giants definitely need him.

• Jason Pinnock is tied with Lawrence for the team lead with three sacks. I don't think many would have had the safety as the sack leader through three weeks. Pinnock's athleticism makes him a great blitzer and helped him thrive in Wink Martindale's system. Credit to Shane Bowen for using Pinnock's strengths in his system.

seeing those OL snap counts.

The Giants have now gone 3 weeks of practice and games with the same OL for the first time since DJ took office.

Was Bellinger with the hold not Johnson
Ojulari had his second good game of the season

And I see Evan Neal was in on zero snaps against the Browns which reminds me of the old adage, “Addition by subtraction.”

First thing I noticed as well. They didn’t make anywhere near the same room in the run game as they did against Washington, but the pass pro was solid yet again

I was just thinking of Neal. He has to be traded by week 8 if he hasn't taken a snap, right? A top 10 OL pick that's only 24, someone must be looking over the scrap pile by then.

seems to hurt someone on the opponent's interior OL every week.

I half wonder if that's the reason Schmitz always gets dinged in practice.

The dude is a freaking load. Guys knees give out trying to hold up.

You could be right. I'm frankly at a loss as to what the Giants should do with him. It would be nice if his no-load is getting him more and more healed up so that he'll at least be functional at some position.

Is a master of latching onto little things to make sweeping conclusions that support his prior narratives. Hawkins is corner depth. McCloud plays CB but his ST play is what got him here. Green is an ST player who was forced to play CB by injuries.

Hawkins might be useless, though it's too early to write him off. Regardless, it's fucking annoying to see certain writers do this shit.

Lets just keep the OL depth where it is. Injuries happen.

I'm kind of thinking the opposite. Let the OL play well and let Bricillo keep working with Neal. Injuries happen and Neal's number may need to be called at some point. He's 24 years old. Yes, you'd expect a 3rd year 7th overall pick to be starting and playing at a high level, but maybe he can be a "late bloomer" and have a positive impact later this year or next year.

He also had Watson DEAD TO RIGHTS for a sack and just.....whiffed. I still have no idea how he didn't destroy him.

That's what's missing with Simmons - the killer instinct. IMO.
Simmons
Gman11 : 9/23/2024 7:03 pm : link
It's not a lack of killer instinct. It's a lack of tackling ability.
What's missing is the same thing that's missing from Micah McFadden
Ten Ton Hammer : 9/23/2024 7:07 pm : link
and Cordale Flott.

They can't tackle.
