Effectiveness of the screen game

Jimmy Meatballs : 9/23/2024 10:25 am
Didn’t see this called out in any other threads in detail but will delete if this is duplicative.

I feel like the Giants have not been able to effectively and consistently leverage the screen game since the Tiki Barber days and have not been able to defend it since the Antonio Pierce days. It’s just one game but yesterday I thought they were able to do both very effectively. There were no big hitters but they were able to keep the pass rush honest with some effective screens that moved the chains and picked up some nice chunks of yardage. Usually, Jones seems panicky and the timing is off. But even on a couple that seemed a little broken, he stayed calm and got the ball to his receiver. On defense, there were a couple times it looked like screens were going to go for big yardage with blockers out in front but the defense was able to limit the gains. I’ve been yelling at the TV for years about why other teams can kill us with screens but we can’t run one to save our lives. Yesterday was the first time in a long time where I felt like it was the other team feeling that way.
I remember seeing polls

Of other teams, and it's a common complaint.

At lower levels, just getting the ball out there in space is enough.

NFL -you need all the blockers, and that's tough to time.

I was pleasantly surprised.
Dallas got killed in the screen game

This week against Baltimore.
Giants definitely had success with the 2 or 3 screens they ran this week I would expect to see a couple against Dallas since Parsons doesn't seem to react to them well.
I think you’re right that the difference yesterday

was Jones delivered the ball on time and mostly in a good enough spot that the RB or TE could get going quickly. That’s not been the case more often than not with Jones, and losing 1-2 seconds while the receiver adjusts to a bad throw wrecks the timing

Hope our boy keeps it up
Generally, I agree but

the Browns burned us on a screen at one point where they drew our defense deep into the backfield and lobbed it over the DL to Ford (?) and I swear he took it for @ 40 yds. Not exactly a rousing support of the thread premise...

one screen play that looked like it was blocked beautifully and Singletary didn't hit it right. The veteran OL is doing a much better job with it and Jones was fading more before he threw, to set it up.
