NFT: Thought on Rowdy Tellerz and Pittsburgh Pirates situation

JT039 : 9/25/2024 8:45 am
For those of you dont know, Rowdy was optioned earlier this week. He was not having a good year whatsoever, but the thing is he had a $200,000 bonus coming to him if he got to 425 PA. He was optioned at 421 with a week games left.

Pirates are adamant that it had nothing to do with the bonus but just on performance. And they wanted to see a few youngster play the last few weeks.

Scumbag move? Right move?

To me, this is a reason why the Pirates are a joke of an organization. I bet there are some pissed off players that see this and may be reluctant to continue playing for the Pirates or will ignore them if they get to FA.
From something I read on Reddit earlier on this

Dude has a .116 batting average in September, really seems like he just checked out.
We're fortunate that our teams play in a big market which brings in

big financial resources. The Pirates are not in that situation.
He had negative WAR on the season

Literally worse than replacement. Not sure why he’s entitled to any performance bonuses.
Hard to feel bad

about a guy who got $3.2M for being shitty at his job, a year after getting $4.9M for being shitty as his job, losing out on 200k because his employer didn't feel he deserved it (because he is shitty as his job).
Two things are true here

1) Tellez has been terrible and deserved to be cut; 2) the Pirates have the cheapest ownership group in pro sports, led by Bob Nutting who has been a spectacular loser since acquiring majority ownership of the franchise in 2007

Seriously, he was their sixth highest salary at $3.2M on a team with an $85M payroll that receives approximately $100M annually in revenue sharing.

After looking at this, now I'm curious about why they gave that contract to a poor fielding 1st baseman whose bat averaged less than one WAR per year in his career. Perhaps, he was a bridge signing who was expect to hold the spot for a decent prospect otherwise???

well put. fuck em. $8.1 mil for being a shitty player and people question it? more teams should do that.

He hit .300 in July and August and then fell off a cliff to .115 in 15 games in September. He hit 13 HR in 2024 after hitting 13 HR in 2023 with Mil so he has never come close to the 35 homers he hit with Mil in 2022. He'll be 30 next year and is not the future. I don't think it has anything to do with saving $200,000.

The Pirates are bargain bun hunters and saw the opportunity to pay peanuts (in FA money) for someone who once hit 30+ HRs.

I feel bad for Pirates fans - they've been operating like paupers for decades at this point. Who was that GM of theirs who became notorious for signing cheaper vets and flipping them at the deadline every single year?

They've had some big-time talent come up through that team, but unless lightning strikes and they happen to become competitive during their rookie deals they seem resigned to trading them in their primes instead of paying them. Imagine a rotation with Gerrit Cole - Paul Skenes - Joe Musgrove at the top?
